Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Arts 6 Self-Learning Module on Printmaking and
Photography!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
Welcome to the Arts 6 Self-Learning Module on Printmaking and
Photography!

design? Which one is made by hand and which one is by computer?
Figur e 1 & 2. An example of
an ar t of pr intmaking
Nowadays, one of our ways to express ourselves is through shirt printing.
Graphic designed shirts or statement shirts let us express our thoughts and
emotions. But do you know that they are an art of printmaking? What is
printmaking? What are the different types of it? And what are fundamental
principles of design.
Printmaking-It is an art form in which a design is transferred from one
surface to another material like paper, fabric, or textile, wood, stone. It is a type of
art which uses the ability to create multiple copies of a piece of art. This art form
commonly uses ink and paint to make the design on the surface of the medium.
Printmaking is also one of the various ways to promote something essential and to
show belongingness in a celebration or event.
FOUR BASIC CATEGORIES OF PRINTMAKING
1. Relief Printmaking - It is a type of printing wherein the material is carved
from around the protruding or raised image/design
that is to be printed so that only the design appears.
Example is rubber stamp pressed into the stamp pad
and pressed onto a piece of paper.

2. Intaglio Printmaking -It is the opposite of relief printmaking in that the
raised portion remains blank while carved or engraved
portions are inked then printed. This type of
printmaking, only the lines that outline the image are
printed.

3. Planographic Printmaking - It is also called lithograph, is a type of
printmaking in which the design is printed from a
flat surface. This type of printmaking, an
image/design is drawn on the surface with a grease
material, such as a grease crayons, and the water is
applied.

4. Stencil Printmaking or Stenciling - It involves cutting the design out
of a thin material called a stencil. The design is
then printed by rubbing, rolling or spraying paint
through the cutout area.

THREE BASIC TIPS IN PRINTMAKING
1. Creating the plate - A printing plate is made by creating design or an image
on the surface of the material.
2. Inking the plate - This is applying ink or inks to the plate.
3. Transferring the image - This involves the transfer of the ink to the
paper or cloth by pressing the paper or cloth against the plate. The paper
or cloth is then pulled off the plate.
There are standards to be observed in creating works of an art
they are how to create and organize artwork.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Balance- it is a distribution of visual weight on either side of the vertical
axis. Symmetrical balance uses the same characteristic.
Asymmetrical uses different but equally weighted features.

The final appearance of a print depends on the color, media, and technique
used. Applying the principles of design in printmaking, like contrast or combination
of colors, using assorted values or tones, contrast of lines and texture, used
assorted shapes and patterns, surely produces harmony in the design whether the
art work is done by hand or by machine or computer.
