The Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an accepted skills
acquisition programmer which forms part of the approved academic standard in the
degree programme for Nigeria University. In 1974, the federal government of Nigeria
introduced the national policy on industrial training, called the Students Industrial
Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). This programme is under the umbrella of the
ministry of education through the industrial training fund (ITF), was designed to
help students acquire the necessary practical education/experience
in their field of study and other related professions. This is an effort which was created
on order to bridge the existing gap between the theory taught in the classroom and
practice of science, agriculture, medicine, engineering, technology and other
professional programmes in the Nigeria tertiary institution. The programme was
established basically to impact elaborate practical understanding to students with
respect to their various disciplines. This report is a summary of the experience I
acquired during my Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at Virgoan
Communication.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
The Industrial Training fund established by decree 43 was introduced in 1971, vis-à-
vis the birth of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) the same
year by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN). It is against this background that
the industrial training fund (ITF) initiated, designed and introduced SIWES Scheme in
1973 to acquaint students with the skills of handling employers’ equipment and
machinery.
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) solely funded the scheme during its formative
years. However, due to financial constraints, the fund withdrew from the scheme in
1978. The Federal Government, noting the significance of the skills training, handed
the management of the scheme to both the National Universities Commission (NUC),
and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1979. The management
and implementation of the scheme was however, reverted to the ITF by the Federal
Government in November, 1984 and the administration was effectively taken over by
the industrial training fund in July 1985, with the funding solely boned by the Federal
Government. It is an integral part of the requirements for the award of Certificates,
Diplomas and Degrees in institutions of higher learning, e.g. Colleges of Education,
Polytechnics, Universities, etc.
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) exposes students to industry-
based skills necessary for a smooth transition from the classroom to work
environments. It accords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being
familiarized, exposed, and prepare students of universities, polytechnics, college of
technology, college of agricultures and college of education for the industrial work
situation they are likely to meet after graduation and to the needed experience in
handling machinery and equipment which are not found in such an educational
institution.

1.2 Function of the bodies involved in Siwes
The Federal Government of Nigeria,
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF),
National Universities Commission (NUC),
National Board for Technical Education (NBTE),
National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE),
Institutions of Higher Learning;
The Employers of Labour
1.3 Objectives of SIWES
To provide students with relevant practical experience.
To satisfy accreditation requirements set by the Nigerian Universities Commission
(NUC).
-To familiarize students with typical environments in which they are likely to
function professionally after graduation.
-To provide student an opportunity to see the real world of their discipline and
consequently bridge the gap between the University work and actual practice.
-To change the orientation of students towards labour market when seeking for job.
-To help students access area of interest and suitability for their chosen profession.
-To enhance students, contact for future employment.
-To provide access to equipment and other facilities that would not normally be
available in the University workshop
9
-To enlist and enhance industry involvement in university education.
Summarily the objective of the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme.
-To solve, the problem of inadequate practical skills, preparatory for employment
in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institution.
-To promote and encourage the acquisition of skills in industry and commerce,
with a view of generating a pool of indigenous trained manpower sufficient to
meet the needs of the economy.
1.4 Importance of Siwes to mass communication
Wider range of knowledge: As a communicator, Industrial Training opens you
to a wider range of knowledge. It gives you a vast knowledge of the course you
are reading and gets you exposed as well.
Preparations for the future: Industrial Training prepares you for the future. It
makes a student to know what it feels like to be a worker in terms of trying to
work under pressure to achieve required goals.
Meeting People: Through industrial training, you can get acquainted with
some personalities. You will have regular opportunities to meet and converse
with some experts in broadcasting, print journalism, public relations, among
others.
Carrier Options: Industrial training helps you to decide which career option to
major in when you graduate from school. It exposes you to skills that will help
determine your area of strength in the profession. The skills you will learn in
any concentration during industrial training can be cross – applied in fields
such as editing, news reading etc, you will excel in writing and communication
skills which are frequently cited by employers as critical skills for any job
applicants.
Professional Confidence: I.T gives the students confidence after interacting
with professionals and experts in the field, then they will be bold enough to go
extra miles in their career having conquered fears.
10
Comparing realities with theory: This means that through industrial training,
students get to compare what they’ve been taught in the classroom with the the
practical part of it, thereby getting to understand his course better.
Inter-school Meeting Ground: Industrial Training serves as a platform for you
to meet students from different schools and share your experiences with them
as well as make new friends/create contacts who could be of great help to you
in future.
Expression of Creativity: By creating/having your own
programmes/show in your organisation or having an opinion column, you can
let those creative juices flow.
Meeting deadlines and managing risks with stress: Journalism is such a
risky job and reporters often travel to the location where an event occurred to
conduct interviews and investigate the stories before reporting. Therefore as a
practicing journalists (during IT), you will be able to learn how to manage
stressful condition and the risk involved in order to meet deadlines and be the
first to report the story.
Ability to get interesting stories: Through industrial training, you will learn
how to research stories, write, edit them perfectly and accurately report them.
1.5 Virgoan Communication Profile
Virgoan Communication is an active business centre registered with the CAC and has
been in active operation since 2022.
There is currently 1 active director according to the latest confirmation statement
submitted on 14th February 2022.
11
1.6 Virgoan Communication history
It is known for its long existence in handling mostly student admission and general
activities that any cyber cafe can handle
1.7 Organizational structure of Virgoan Communication
This is a sole propriortorship business owned by a single person where most first year
student go to acquire more knowledge.
1.8 Various personnel in Virgoan Communication and their function
1. The manager: This is the main owner of virgoan Communication who direct and
manage the business.
2. Operators: These are the personnel who handle jobs brought into the business and
usually ask for steps from the managers and also take instructions. They make use
of different tools and equipments like;
The Computer
A computer system is an integrated form of different components that work together
to give a desirable result. It has different component and each works for a specific
purpose; however, they generate a common result as required by the user.
12
The Laminator
A "laminator machine" is a device that applies a thin plastic film to paper documents,
photos, or other materials, essentially "laminating" them to protect them from wear
and tear, water damage, and dirt by sealing them between layers of plastic using heat
and pressure; essentially making them more durable.
Key points about a laminator machine:
Function:
It sandwiches the item you want to laminate between plastic sheets and then runs it
through heated rollers to fuse the plastic to the item.
Purpose:
To protect documents, photos, ID cards, etc., by making them resistant to tearing,
wrinkling, and moisture.
Common use:
Found in offices, schools, and homes where people need to preserve important
papers.
13
The Printer
Printer is an electronic device that accepts text files or images from a computer and
transfers them to a medium such as paper or film. It can be connected directly to the
computer or indirectly via a network. Printers are classified as impact printers (in
which the print medium is physically struck) and non-impact printers. Most impact
printers are dot-matrix printers, which have a number of pins on the print head that
emerge to form a character. Non-impact printers fall into three main
categories: laser printers use a laser beam to attract toner to an area of the paper; ink-
jet printers spray a jet of liquid ink; and thermal printers transfer wax-based ink or use
heated pins to directly imprint an image on specially treated paper. Important printer
characteristics include resolution (in dots per inch), speed (in sheets of paper printed
per minute), colour (full-colour or black-and-white), and cache memory (which affects
the speed at which a file can be printed).
The Wifi
14
Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that allows devices such as computers
(laptops and desktops), mobile devices (smart phones and wearables), and other
equipment (printers and video cameras) to interface with the Internet. It allows these
devices--and many more--to exchange information with one another, creating a
network.
Internet connectivity occurs through a wireless router. When you access Wi-Fi, you
are connecting to a wireless router that allows your Wi-Fi-compatible devices to
interface with the Internet.
The Catridge
A printer cartridge is a container that holds ink or toner for a printer. The quality of
the print depends on the type and condition of the cartridge.
Types of printer cartridges
Ink cartridges
Contain liquid ink and are used in inkjet printers. Some inkjet printers have
microchips in the cartridges to prevent the use of refilled ink.
15
Toner cartridges
Use laser technology to melt toner dust onto paper. Toner cartridges can be refillable
or disposable.
Features of printer cartridges
Memory
Some cartridges have a small amount of memory that stores information about the
cartridge's status.
Electronic contacts
Some cartridges have electronic contacts to exchange information with the printer.
How to use printer cartridges
To replace an ink cartridge, open the printer's cartridge door, slide the old cartridge out,
and slide the new cartridge in.
To replace a toner cartridge, you can either replace the entire cartridge or add replacement
toner to the existing cartridge.
Environmental impact
The manufacturing process for toner cartridges uses petroleum, and many end up in
landfills.
Refilled and remanufactured cartridges can be more environmentally friendly than new
cartridges.

CHAPTER FOUR
RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION
4.1 CONCLUSION
The Federal Government’s efforts at improving the nation’s technical know-how and
increasing the efficiency of middle level manpower are not restricted to the industries
alone. It is evident that skills development and utilization cannot be achieved in
isolation, rather, the relevant stakeholders must be committed to the course and be
fully involved, which means students and teachers form institutions of higher learning,
corporate industries and commercial bodies, and Federal Government must be
involved. This cooperative machinery between industrial and institutions of higher
learning will produce effective results under the supervision and control of the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF).
4.2: RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended that government should devote sufficient financial and human
resources to all levels and aspects of education to enhance effective running of
educational programmes especially SIWES. Polytechnics should be encouraged to
establish technological development centres to translate innovations from staff and
students to goods and services. This will enable them fulfill their basic social.
