Included in this file are the following items:
• Suggested Uses
• Illustrated Dictionary Template (1 page)
• Vocabulary Word Wheel (3 pages)
• Word Study Graphic Organizer (1 page)
• Vocabulary Tree (1 page)
These graphic organizers can be used in vocabulary study to address the following Social
Studies/History and Science & Technical Subjects Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-12.4; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-12.4
Suggested Uses
Illustrated Dictionary: Use this organizer to help students visualize new vocabulary terms in
the context of the topic of study. Students look up the definitions, then illustrate the term in a
way that is meaningful to them. Encourage students to create their illustrations in the context
of the topic about which they are reading.
Vocabulary Word Wheel: This tactile organizer helps to reinforce vocabulary terms and
definitions. Students label the base wheel with vocabulary terms and definitions, then attach
the top wheel to the base wheel. Students will be able to concentrate on one term/definition at
a time as they turn the wheel.
Word Study Graphic Organizer: This organizer encourages higher-level thinking as students
analyze vocabulary by answering a series of questions related to the terms. The questions
require application of prior and new knowledge as students determine the meaning and
importance of the terms. These organizer are most effective in small-group or whole-class
settings.
Vocabulary Tree: This organizer starts with a target word as the base or “trunk” of the tree.
Students then identify related terms, ideas, and information, which can be turned into
subtopics or “branches” of the base word. The number of branches is dependent on how in-
depth the study of the term is. Students should continue to add to the organizer as they read
and learn more about the term and the topic from which it originated. This organizer can be
completed individually or can be adapted to small-group or whole-class settings. Students can
also draw their own trees to provide more or less space for writing.
