Reflection

Deployment week

Today marks my first day as an intern. I was a little nervous as I glaze upon the school I
will be teaching at. The murmurs of the students, gloomy sky, and the smiles our cooperating
teachers gave us: those made me back a little bit. But I’m here anyway so I guess this is it. We
went to the principal’s office for a short huddle and to discuss some important reminders. It is
usually a 1:1 ratio but in our case it is 4:1. English majors were 12 already and there are just 3
English teachers in that school. Right after that, we visited the advisory class of our Resource
teacher and they were 8th graders. I have to admit they resemble myself back when I was at 8th
grade; always messes around. It was a bit good fun and a smirk came out of me. It was a memorable
part of my high school journey. I found my circle there in which I finally fitted in and that’s where
I start to develop my social identity. A got disconnected to the moment there to be honest. We also
passed by the other sections our Resource Teacher handles. She has 3 8th graders and a 9th one.
They gave me this curious look and an anxious touch got me. I’m going to teach in front of them
someday and they will address me as ‘Sir’. Kind of exciting and nervous all at once. It’s fascinating
how our teacher know each one them. I can’t even remember some of my classmates back in high
school. Definitely a sharp mind. Despite the meager population and other arising issues, the
teachers here are able to effectively manage that part. I must say they are doing a great job on this
particular aspect. I would like to suggest that upgrading the facilities and providing them with
enough learning resources would be a great start for a more conducive learning experience. Based
from my observation, the students do thrive in the current system but with the added said
suggestions, it would be a great difference. Advanced and world-class education shouldn’t be a
privilege but rather an essential necessity that every individual must have. I believe that our
education department could provide those if they really care about our nation’s youth. Right after
the tour, we went back to the principal’s office. Lastly, a short huddle again to discuss some things.
Overall, this day was productive and put some pressure on me but it was fun. Looking forward to
a productive internship here at Malitam NHS.
Week 2

It was a fine and mesmerizing morning. Mrs. Panganiban started the class with a lively
greet at the students. The students recite this whole thing which is bizarre to me as we didn’t have
those when I was in high school. Batangueno things, I guess. The students are able to speak in the
English language but with an evident struggle. I have to look out for that one if I want to achieve
my calling as an English teacher. I can now apply the theories, strategies, and approaches with
regards to language teaching. The lesson was about parts of speech, grammar, and verb tenses. I
had observed that some students still struggle to grasp some of it. Some students misbehave mid-
class but not to treat it as normal but kudos to Ma’am for handling it well. Personally, I get easily
distracted by any noise and movement from my audience which makes me lose my momentum in
front. Props to Ma’am Kath for the patience and self-control she exhibited. There’s this one time
our Resource teacher had to leave for a meeting. We were tasked to organize Agatha, her advisory
class. It was a mess but my co-intern was fierce so they eventually came to a fold. As an ambivert
guy, I struggle in talking in front of an audience let alone taking command and imposing some
authority. I need to look out for that and train myself to be more sociable. Suddenly, I remembered
we tackled what to do in this events and classroom scenarios. We have a course called “Classroom
Management” and this was the time we got to apply the theories, strategies, and approaches we
learned from that class. It was a really a big help as it aids our knowledge about handling students
and the classroom in general. I have noticed how hard for a teacher to manage such diverse
classroom. Gotta appreciate them more with all these extra tasks given among them. It’s true that
not all heroes wear capes. Some of them just have a marker and book on their hands and it’s already
business. Kudos to our professional teachers around the world. You deserve everything good in
life. Agatha was a great start for us so we will be familiar on how classroom antiques go and what
are the proper interventions to conduct. Experience is something that doesn’t have a price so we
should seize the moment while it lasts.
Week 3

The school conducted the weekly flag ceremony. A nostalgic breeze blew across me as I
walked trip down memory lane about my high school journey. I remembered back in the day a lot
of scuffles happened right after the ceremony which was fun to me at least to my immature self.
The cries and murmurs that surround the scene; it was surreal. The ceremony was organized and
they sing and recite a lot of hymns and stuff. I’ve noticed how at some point they are in chorus
then suddenly some of them misses out. I think they should memorize such hymns and practice it
more. After that, the usual announcements come up like important reminders, recognition of
students, and other school stuff. It was approximately 45 minutes and they went back to their
classrooms after that. I can sense the exhaustion on some students as they just want to sit down
and rest their legs from standing that long. The regular classes started. It was also the Girl Scouts’
week and our adviser was the acting adviser for that. Another administrative task for her. She’s
the one in charge in facilitating the event and handling those involved and concerned. It was a busy
day for her and us as well. We helped in the decoration of the venue for the event. I made some
balloons and party stuff. I enjoyed it as it eased my mind a bit. Felt like we’re back in elementary
doing some art stuff. I popped some balloons and that was careless on my part. Sorry, Ma’am
Kath. The school doesn’t have a spacious covered gymnasium and it’s raining that day. They had
to conduct the event in a certain space in the building. I eventually came back to the room as they
don’t have a teacher during that period. Agatha was acting up again. It was a headache for sure
and even Katinko won’t do something about it. Welcome to teachers’ life, I guess. I can’t recall
how many times I mildly slammed the table just to keep them in line. A lot of ‘shhhs’, ‘quiet,
Agatha’ were thrown that time. But they are just kids so self-control is a must. You have to keep
yourself composed or you will lose your sanity in a glimpse. With a crowded room and when it’s
a sunny day, it’s like fast food kitchen on weekends. I work there so I know the feeling. The stress,
exhaustion, heat, and other unpleasant elements just cloud the whole atmosphere. It’s pretty wild
and chaotic but the experience is absolute. I still love Agatha.
Week 4

This week was productive. The students took their examinations in different subjects. The
room was filled with confusion, curiosity, and mild sighs. You can see that in their faces as they
take this academic puzzle. Some of them don’t even want to be there anymore and just a waiting
quit button. I think this exact scenario is universal and evident in almost every classroom during
examination day. We oversaw Agatha and Diamond in their exam day. It just feels good knowing
you impose some authority amongst them and they somehow obey you. Sir Mac reporting to duty.
There is just a minimal noise throughout the session and I appreciate how they take this matter
seriously. Take it seriously or take a 60; you choose. Little things that make me want to pursue
teaching more now. A sudden urge to daydream as a teacher with the fancy uniform as I graze
upon the hallways. An exciting thought if you would ask me. And this time I had my intern
uniform(finally). Now I won’t be confused with other students. I remembered one time a teacher
mistook me for a student because I still don’t have my intern uniform that time. We just gave it a
good laugh. The following days, it’s time for the results of the examination that took place today.
The administration of results and scores was like a finale of a game show where there is a constant
anxiety going on. Some failed, some passed but life goes on as the old folks say. It’s fulfilling that
there are some that got a high score and just means that teaching was effective. Sadly, some weren’t
able to pass and worse, didn’t took the exam due to unforeseen circumstances. I think the teachers
laid some action plan in the event these cases happen. It could be in a form of remedial sessions
or special type of examination. Those students need to catch up or they will get a failing grade that
falls under the major examination grading criteria. The highlight of this week was we helped on
organizing student modules which were stocked in their ‘stock room’. It was a complete mess to
be honest. Everything got mixed up and you don’t even know where to start and what to organize.

But you know what they say, a teacher must be a jack of all trades. About time that the division
office should look on this matter for they lack some facilities and materials here. This is just one
of the pressing issues that many schools face and there should be an action vis a vis this matter.
Going back, we’re able to gather enough modules for the whole 8th grade for different quarters.
This will be their learning guide whenever there is a discussion or class session. Overall, indeed a
productive week for me.
Week 5

It was the teacher’s day week-long celebration. It was special unlike any other regular class
days. The hallways were filled with heartwarming greetings from the students. I did get a greeting
and it felt deep. I felt I belong to the academe workforce in a minute. This week, the teachers were
treated extra special like the way they deserve. It’s hard being a teacher so this week should
definitely be a great week for them. Matter of fact, they should be treated special throughout their
teaching careers. The dedication, time, passion, and love they spent should be reciprocated by the
same. It’s their job to teach but the responsibility that comes with it is no joke. Some of my co-
interns helped in preparing the event. I didn’t get the chance to help out since we were tasked by
my resource teacher to do some other tasks. It’s an observation but we’re grateful because we’re
being trusted to handle such things that teachers do. A headstart of our teaching career. We’re
asked to check some students’ outputs and works. Judging them from my perspective, they are
very creative and you can see they lent enough time in doing such. Props to this kids for doing
their best. Mrs. Kath never failed raising these youngins’. It was a variety of works. Posters,
slogans, and essays. I got a bit of headache reading some of the essays. I tried hard to find the amin
point of their works. Main ideas are commonly placed at the starting paragraph. At other cases,
they are in the middle or later part. The construction of statements is not that organized nor concise.
That part still needs improvement. Grammar-wise, they should definitely read dictionaries
frequently. The students still need to master the basics before proceeding in the more complex sub-
topics of the English subject area. In reality, English subjects are not effective without the aid of
the vernacular especially in the secondary level. Some concepts need to be translated for
comprehension’s sake. It is not easy but we’re getting there little by little. Afterall, it was a learning
experience for us as well. This week, highlighted by the Teacher’s day celebration, signified the
crucial roles our teachers have and doing. The love for duty and passion goes a long way for a
teacher.
My last week

This marks my last day of my Field Study 1 journey. The learnings I gathered and earned
were priceless. I got a whole new insight about the teaching profession and to simply put, it was
fun. My last day was productive as I was tasked to facilitate a lesson to St. Matthew, one of Mrs.
Panganiban’s students. I get to actually practice the basics of facilitating a lesson: pre-class
activities, lesson proper, formative assessment, and administering of assignments or homeworks.
I successfully did it though so congrats, self. I was a bit nervous just standing there in front of
them. I must not show any of those emotions to earn their respect and attention. There was a
minimal noise during the session but it was manageable. I didn’t get distracted easily so I think
that was a professional improvement. I taught them about opinion marking signals. I actually read
the whole topic for about 10 minutes and I just went there with ample confidence. Confidence is
the key if you want to stand in front of a classroom. It was a phenomenal experience for me. A
simple thing but meant a lot to me. They learned something from me. This day was productive
overall. This is just the initial stage as I prepare for the Field Study 2. I will surely carry all the
knowledge I gained in this institution and will use it as I undergo the next stage. A learning
experience indeed.
My Field Study 1 Journey

The last year of any education major student is a stage of experience and learnings. This
prepares them as they get out there and apply the theoretical concepts they learned in their junior
years. Teaching as a profession is not for everyone. You must be a formidable breed to survive
this line of work. Patience, dedication, perseverance: factors that you must bear as a starting point.
The philosophy of professional teaching transcends textbooks and theories. The application is
another whole story and bears with a lot of passion if you really have one. The ride of teaching
profession have a lot of highs and lows but the experience is worthy if we go along it.

This portfolio is the proof of my internship journey and progress as I went through Field
Study 1. Here attached my philosophy, pre and post beliefs, compilation of worksheets, reflective
essays, and learning artifacts and documentations. They are the testament to my eagerness to
pursue this program and realize my dream of becoming a professional educator. This professional
portfolio is a collection of artifacts related to this course and will be used as my personal logbook
about the event I went through. The profession I’m pursuing is a tough one just what I expected.
Looking back, it’s all encouragement and passion that pushes me to push through this.
Beliefs on Teaching (Pre and Post)

Back when I was a freshman, I thought teaching doesn’t require much. You just have to be
confident and knowledgeable about a certain topic and you’re good to go. Teaching and learning
process go both ways and one can’t stand all alone without the other. As a teacher, you’re still a
learner for learning is a life-long process. It never ends as humans have this never-ending desire
for solving curiosities. In this profession, you must be organized in and out in order to effectively
maintain an organized classroom. The mixed set-up of a classroom allows the instructor to
maximize their resources intended to addressing the learners’ needs. However, in the event of a
classroom crisis, it requires the instructor assigned to it that proper measure and intervention must
be applied to avoid further escalation. The profession of teaching is an image of hustle,
perseverance, and character. The system is designed to conduct a wide-scale instruction that
includes differentiated and heterogeneous delivery. Based on my experience during FS 1, the
curriculum is perfectly fine but without proper and efficient delivery, it will be considered stagnant
and ineffective. On this course of my educational journey, I strive to be the better version of myself.
I’m looking forward to the valuable learnings that I will gain as I go this path.
