3 Laser slit lamp LSL

3.1 Adjusting the eyepieces
Prior to any adjustment of the slit lamp optics, the eyepieces must be adjusted separately.

Two adjustment options exist:

3.1.1 Far field adjustment

1. Remove the binocular tube with eyepieces from
the slit lamp.
2. Set both eyepieces to + 8 diopters.
3. Point the binocular tube with the eyepieces at a
distant object.

Caution
Never use the sun as the distant
object.

4. Slowly turn the diopter scales of the eyepieces

clockwise until the object is in focus in both
eyepieces.
Fig. 1: Diopter setting (+8) of the eyepieces
5. If necessary, repeat the procedure three times
and take the average value.

3.1.2 On the slit lamp

1. Mount a focusing target on the headrest of the
slit lamp.
2. Set the eyepieces to 0 diopters.
3. Set maximum magnification on the magnification
changer.
4. Use the joystick to focus on the target plane.
5. Lock the slit lamp in position.
6. Set minimum magnification on the magnification
changer.
7. Adjust the two eyepieces one after the other to
focus on the target plane.
8. Set maximum magnification on the
magnification changer and check the setting Fig. 2: Diopter setting (0) of the eyepieces

3.2 Slit image (micromanipulator deactivated)

3.2.1 Basic adjustment of the slit position
1. Remove the housing of the slit projector.
2. LSL must be switched on (laser is ON)
3. Unplug the motor cable (deactivation of the
micromanipulator).
4. Disconnect the spring charged plastic pin, which is
reducing the loose of the inner part of the prism
head.
5. Attach adjustment ring 1772-241 to the cylindrical
part of the slit projector (prism head) as shown in
the illustration so that the pins of the adjustment
screws are fitted into the corresponding holes.
Carefully tighten the adjustment screws. In this
process, the inner part of the prism head should
move to the position of the mechanical and
optical center. Fig. 3: Basic adjustment of the slit position
6. In the LSL with the VITE option, the ball bearings on the motor gears should be positioned
exactly on the corresponding circular marking of the cam disk.
Use adjustment ring 1772-241 for the LSL VITE very careful because of the risk of
damage!

3.2.2 Focusing of the projection plane and horizontal

adjustment of the slit position
Requirement: Crosslines
When you turn the slit projector from one side to the other, the slit
image must not move out of position and the projection plane must be
in focus.

5 mm cirlce

Fig. 4: Projection plane

1. Mount a projection plane (1) provided with
crosslines and a 5 mm diameter circle on the 1
headrest and align the slit lamp with it.
Alternatively, you can use alignment template
1294-327 or an eyepiece with a reticle.
2. Set maximum magnification and a narrow,
vertical slit.
3. Adjust the illumination intensity of the slit to
3
minimum brightness.
4. Set your prescription on the eyepieces
(see the description "Adjusting the eyepieces“,
page 5). 2

7. If the 5 mm circle with the slit image is not

concentric with the field of view in the horizontal
direction and/or if the field of view is not in
focus, slightly loosen screws (1) and move the
microscope until the field of view is in focus and
the 5 mm circle with the slit is horizontally
centered in the field of view. Firmly retighten the
screws and check the slit position again. Correct
once again, if necessary.
If you use the alignment template, you can
determine the center of the field of view on the
basis of the number of vertical lines. If you use an
eyepiece with reticle, the slit should be 1
positioned exactly on the vertical line of the
crosslines. Fig. 7: Aligning the microscope

8. Remove the prism cover (2 screws).

9. Use the three adjustment screws (1) of the prism
mount to center the slit image in the
microscope's field of view. You may have to
loosen or tighten screws (2) in this process
because there are two hemispheres under the
prism plate, acting as bearings for the
adjustment.
10. Remove the adjustment ring 1772-241, connect
the spring charged plastic pin with the inner part 2
of the prism head and connect the motor cables.
11. Check the function of the micromanipulator. The

3.2.6 Adjusting the slit

Requirement:
Slit image (1) and aperture image (2) must be
centered relative to each other, and the sides of the
2
slit must evenly cover and uncover the aperture
edges on the left and right.

1. Focus the largest aperture.

2. Lock the slit lamp in position using the quick lock.
3. Open and close the sides of the slit. 1

Fig. 17: Centering the slit and aperture images

4. Slightly loosen two screws (3) to permit

horizontal movement of detent spring (4). Move
the spring to turn the aperture disk until the sides
of the slit evenly cover the aperture image. In this
position, the wheel must engage in one of the 4 3
clickstops of the aperture disk
Successively switch the aperture disk to all
positions and check that the aperture image is
evenly covered by the sides of the slit. If any
deviations occur at individual aperture positions,
you can carefully rework the relevant detent
notch on the edge to correct the error.
Tolerance:
The smallest aperture can be covered to a
maximum of 30% on each side.
Fig. 18: Using the detent spring to correct the
position of the aperture relative to the slit
sides
5. If the sides of the slit do not close completely,
you can correct this using adjustment screws (5)
on the levers of the slit adjustment mechanism.
Adjust in such a way that the knobs have an extra
range of about 10° when the slit is fully closed.
Check the adjustment at a 32x magnification and
full brightness of the slit. No light gap must be
visible.

3.2.7 Correcting the slit illumination

Requirement:
The illuminated field must be completely and evenly
illuminated.
1. Focus the slit.
2. Set the largest aperture.
3. Reduce the illumination to a minimum level until
any shadows in the illuminated field become
visible.
4. For preadjustment, use a feeler gage to set a
distance of 0.8 mm between the lamp housing
and the condenser plate. Slightly loosen securing
screws (1) of the lamp housing and vertically
move the lamp housing for this purpose.
Fig. 20: Illuminating the illuminated field

5. Use mount (3) to horizontally move the lamp

housing. This enables the adjustment of uniform
illumination for the illuminated field. The
illuminated field must be homogeneous and
without clouding. If any brown or blue fringes
are visible in the illuminated field at high
illumination intensities, readjust the lamp 1
housing in the vertical direction.
6. Tighten screws (2).

2 3 2

Fig. 21: Loosening the lamp mount and moving the

lamp housing (bottom view)
If uniform illumination cannot be obtained this way,
perform the adjustment using the projection of the
lamp filament on the deflecting prism.

1. Attach transparent paper (4) to the deflecting 4

prism and center the image of the lamp filament
by moving the lamp mount. Two images of the
lamp filament are projected by the objective
lenses of the slit projector. They should be
imaged evenly one above the other and without
clipping.
2. Then check the illumination of the projection
surface once again and optimize it.
Note

Remember its orientation!

Fig. 23: Checking the magnification changer

3. Undo screws (2) and remove the plate.

Note
Remember its orientation!

4. Carefully pull out the magnification changer in a

horizontal direction from the opposite side. The
optical system can now be cleaned. Do not use
acetone. If necessary, slightly lubricate the sliding 2
surfaces on the changer circumference.
Note
Remember its orientation!

Fig. 24: Loosening the magnification changer

5. When reinserting the magnification changer, make sure that the magnification figures on
either side are identical, that the changer turns smoothly, the clickstops can be clearly felt and
the field of view is not vertically clipped.
6. If the field of view is clipped at the top or bottom by the magnification changer, unscrew the
microscope from the arm. The screws of the detent spring for positioning the changer are
now accessible. Slightly loosen the screws and move the detent spring in the direction of the
microscope shaft. This permits the clickstop position of the changer to be adjusted until the
fiel of view is no longer clipped. Mount the tube and eyepieces to assess the adjustment.
7. After this adjustment procedure, readjust the focusing of the projection plane and the slit
position (see 3.2, page 6).

precisely with the circular cutout of the
carrier plate.
After reinstallation, the field of view must
not be clipped by the edge of the filter 4 5 3 2
wheel.

4. Loosen the set screws on bearing ring (4) and

adjust the bevel gear system. Fig. 26: Adjusting the filter position

Note
Move the bearing ring in such a way that the bevel gears intermesh without slack and
the shaft is free from noticeable slack.

5. Install the filter changer and check through the microscope

- with open slit,
- largest illuminated field aperture,
- 12x magnification and
- medium illumination intensity
whether the imaged illuminated field is clipped by the filter edge.
6. Switch to all filter positions.
Note
The filter must reliably engage in the clickstop position.

3.3 Replacing the zoom system

Removal:
1. Unscrew the light guide cable.
2. Slightly loosen the 4 spot size adjustment screws (5) and slide
the plate a bit downward.
3. Undo 4 screws (4) on the zoom system flange and remove the
zoom system.

Installation: 4
1. Slightly loosen the 4 spot size adjustment screws (5) and slide
the plate a bit downward.
2. Set a spot size of 50.
3. Turn zoom system gear (3) clockwise to the stop and screw 3
the zoom system onto the slit projector.
4. Mesh the gears and screw down the spot size adjustment
mechanism.
5. Vary the spot size in steps and watch the changing spot size
through the microscope at maximum magnification.
Note 5
Check that the spot size adjustment mechanism moves Fig. 27: Replacing the zoom system
smoothly.

6. Assess the sport size.

In the 1000μm position, the aiming beam must be positioned within a square on the
alignment template 1294-327, and the smallest spot must be imaged in the 50μm position.
Alternatively, graph paper scaled in millimeters can be used for this procedure. Again, it is
essential that the slit lamp be focused precisely on the alignment template.
7. If the spot size does not conform to the specifications, slightly loosen the spot size adjustment
mechanism and turn the zoom lens relative to the position of the spot size adjustment
mechanism. Repeat the procedure until the spot size conforms to the specifications.
8. If the spot appears blurred while the slit itself and the projection plane are in focus, the zoom
lens is out of adjustment. The zoom lens cannot be adjusted in the field. The LSL must be
adjusted at the factory. Alternatively, the zoom lens can be removed and sent in for
adjustment.

5. Adjustment tool 1497-336 can be used to

facilitate the procedure. Connect the tool to the
corresponding connector of the potentiometer
and turn the potentiometer until the LED on the
tool lights green. For devices with a distributor
board, adapter cable (1) with the jack connector
for earlier micromanipulator versions must be
unplugged from the adjustment tool.
For units without the VITE option, adjust the
objective lens with the cam disk to the 1
optical/mechanical center using adjustment ring
1772-241. Units with the VITE option have to be
adjusted only with the circular markings on the
cam disk. The bearings of the cam disk must be
exactly coincident with the circular markings on Fig. 37: Adjustment tool
the cam disk (see Fig. 54). Observe the coincident
position during adjustment because the unit is not mechanically secured in position without
the adjustment ring!

3.6 Motor control of 532s (old version with 6 potentiometers)

1. After exchanging the motor or potentiometer
(3.5.4, page 18), attach the gears with ball
bearings (2) in the positions shown in the
illustration and secure them on the shaft using
the hex socket head screws. Do not turn the
potentiometer shaft again during this procedure 2
(center adjustment)!
2. Attach gears (3) to the motor shafts and secure
them in position with the locking screws. 3
3. Turn the motor housing so that the gears are
meshed with each other.
4. Secure the position of the motors using locking 4 4
screws (4).

Note
Make sure during installation that the bearings run smoothly in the cams.
The base unit of the manipulator drive and the upper edge of the gears must be located in
one plane. The cam disk must not scrape along the gears.
After completion of the installation, check the cam disk for smooth motion. The spring
force of the plastic pin for slack compensation should be sufficient to move the cam disk.
Special attention should be given to this aspect in versions featuring the VITE
options.
8. Move the cam disk in such a way that the collar of the upper ball bearing is positioned exactly
on the marking provided on the cam disk.
Note
Do not turn the potentiometer shafts in
this process.
9. Lock the potentiometer gears on the shafts using
hex socket head screws (2).
10. Use the eccentric collar to turn the motor housing
so that the gears are meshed with each other.
3
Note 2
The gears must not move stiffly, but they
must also have no noticeable slack.

11. Secure the position of the motors using locking

screws (3).

3.7 Motor control of 532s / Trion (new version with 4

potentiometers) without VITE function
3.7.1 Installing the LSL Trion motor control PCB (532s, Trion and Combi)
1. Insert the PCB in the connector strip of the
controller board with the component side facing
the spacer bolt, and secure it on the spacer bolt
using the screw.

3.7.2 Basic adjustment of the potentiometers

1. The potentiometers are preadjusted to the center
position by the manufacturer. Repeat this
adjustment, if necessary.
2. Mount a holder with graph paper scaled in
millimeters or adjustment template1294-327 on
the headrest and focus the slit lamp on it. Lock the
micromanipulator in the center position.

Fig. 44: Installing the motor control PCB

Note
The focal plane has been reached when the slit remains stationary if you turn the slit
projector to both sides by approx. 30 degrees while at the same time moving the slit
lamp towards the headrest.

3. Use potentiometers R5 and R22 to adjust the slit

horizontally and vertically relative to the center of
the field of view (determined by means of graph
paper), or use an eyepiece with reticle to center
the slit on the center position.

Fig. 45: Motor control PCB

Note
The unused threaded bores on the gears can
be used as an adjustment aid. The center
position has been reached when an imaginary
line connecting the center of the ball bearing,
the motor shaft and the second threaded bore
is parallel to the cutout in the cam.
In more recent LSLs, the ball bearing must be
positioned on the circular marking.

4. Then the deflection must be adjusted using the potentiometers R 2 (for the X direction) and
R 19 (for the Y direction). For this purpose, unlock the micromanipulator on the joystick and
fully deflect it in the X and Y directions from one limit position to the other, while watching
the movement of the aiming beam on the graph paper. The path between the limit positions
must be 4 mm in both directions.
Check whether the cam disk knocks against another
component in this process. Distance "a" should be at
least 0.5 mm in all extreme positions. Components "D"
and "C" must not touch each other, as this would
damage the motor and the electronics.
The drive motors must follow the defined movement
without jerks, delay and acceleration.

Note
The ball bearings should now be roughly in the
position shown in the illustration; in more recent Fig. 47: Checking the cam disk
LSLs, they should be positioned exactly on the
circular markings.

If the ball bearings are not in the indicated position or if one or both motors are running although
the micromanipulator is in the center position,
proceed as follows: 2 37
1
5. Switch off the unit.
6. Loosen two hex socket head screws (2) on the
relevant potentiometer gear.
7. Switch on the unit.
8. Use a screwdriver to turn the shaft of
potentiometer (1) until the associated motor
stops running. 29
2
9. Lift the gear, turn it to the position shown above,
lower it and screw it down again. Make sure that
the upper edges of the manipulator drive and of
the gears are located in one plane.
Fig. 48: Adjusting the ball bearings

10. Attach the objective lens and prism assemblies

and screw them down.
3 11. Then check and, if necessary, correct the
deflection of the slit to one side as described in
3.2.5 (page 10).

3.7.3 Changing the Y movement direction of the slit

The slit normally moves upward on the attached projection plane when the electrical
micromanipulator is moved to the front.

To change the Y movement direction of the slit, proceed as follows:

1. Remove the housing of the slit projector.
2. Unplug the connector for the Y direction.
Note
The two connector sides are marked
with a dot.

3. Interchange the pins in the connector housing:

- Y motor M2

3.8 Laser Position Generator of LSL Visulas 532s VITE / Trion VITE
3.8.1 Installing the LPG board for the VITE option
Note
In LSLs featuring the VITE option, the motors and potentiometers cannot be exchanged in
the field. The complete manipulator drive 1683-817 is therefore available as a factory-
adjusted exchange component.

1. Open the cover of the slit lamp base.

2. Set the base to the uppermost position by turning the joystick. This gives access to two slotted
screws. Remove these screws.
3. Carefully remove the cover upward and in the
direction of the quick lock. Do not apply any force
as this may damage sensor (1).
4. Insert the PCB in the connector strip of the
distributor board with the component side facing
the spacer bolt, and secure it on the spacer bolt
using the screw.
5. In the event of a defect, the LPG PCB as a
spare part is only available in a single package
with the CPU PCB of Visulas 532s / Trion
because these two components must be paired 1
and activated at the factory. This means that
the two components must always be Fig. 52:Installing the VITE option L PG board
exchanged together. They are available as
exchange parts against credit note after return of the defective
parts and checking of the VITE license.

3.8.2 Basic adjustment of the potentiometers

1. The potentiometers are preadjusted to the center position (5 kOhm) by the manufacturer.
Repeat this adjustment, if necessary.
2. Mount the alignment template 1294-327 with the
target 1772-218 on the headrest.

3.8.3 Preadjustment of the optical and mechanical center of the slit projector objective
lens
1. Prerequisites: a perfectly adjusted slit lamp (microscope and slit projector), preadjustment of
the motor control potentiometers (VX, VY, OX and OY) and micromanipulator potentiometers
as described in 3.5.3 (page 18). The housing must be open, the locking screws of the
potentiometer gears must have been loosened. The potentiometers have been adjusted to the
center position using the adjustment tool 1497-
336 as described in 3.5.4 (page 18).
(The setting of the potentiometers must remain
unchanged now).
2. Mount the target 1772-218 on the alignment
template 1294-327 using the magnet and align
it with the center of the field of view (or the
reticle of the eyepiece).
3. Focus the slit lamp on the target.
Note
The focal plane has been reached when
the slit remains stationary if you turn the
slit projector to both sides by approx. 30
degrees while at the same time moving
Fig. 54: Coincide bearings with the circular

4. Start the laser.
5. Unplug the motor connectors from the distributor PCB (this is required after booting the laser;
otherwise the safety logics will switch off the power supply to the slit lamp because it assumes
an error).
6. Disconnect the spring charged plastic pin, which is reducing the loose of the inner part of the
slit projector
7. Adjust the objective lens with the cam disk to the optical/mechanical center using the circular
markings. The ball bearings on the potentiometer gears should now coincide exactly with the
circular markings on the cam disk (look vertically from top in order to avoid a parallax effect).
It is also possible to position the center with help of the adjustment ring tool.
Handle this tool really carefully because of the risk of damaging the inner part of the
slit projector and only as long as the motors are disconnected!

8. Adjust the slit position horizontally (3.2.2, page 6) and vertically (3.2.3, page 7) to the center
of the field of view / the crosslines on the alignment template or the reticle of the eyepiece.
9. Switch off the slit lamp, remove the adjustment ring
tool,(if necessary) and plug the motor connectors.
10. Switch on the slit lamp, activate the LPG mode and
the aiming beam using the control panel of the
laser. Micromanipulator control via the joystick is
now disabled. The slit position changes on the basis VX OX OY VY
of the preadjustment of the motor control.
11. Use the two offset potentiometers for the OX and
OY positions (Fig. 55) to set the bearings of the cam
disc exactly coincident with the circular markings.
The slit position should then be reset to the crosslines
of the alignment template (or the reticle of the Fig. 55: Setting the potentiometers
eyepiece) (offset adjustment).
