2. Calibration of the sensor inputs, the temperature

input and the recorder output of a pH meter

2.1. General
The pH meter must be switched on for 30 minutes before measurement may be performed. The
setup data and the user method must be noted down.

After the calibration, adjustment and certification process setup data and user methods have to
be re-entered into the pH meter.

2.2. Procedure for the calibration of the sensor inputs and the recorder
output
The I/O Tester2 is used to calibrate the sensor input and recorder output.

The I/O Tester2 should be equipped with a 9 V battery as power source. The “on” switch is
locked.
The following values are calibrated:
0 mV / 180 mV / 500 mV / 1000 mV / 1900 mV / -1900 mV / -1000 mV / -500 mV / -180 mV

2.3. Calibration of the sensor inputs.

The calibration is carried out in the user mode.
The voltage must be measured with a certified digital voltmeter of at least ± 0-199999 to the
nearest 0.01mV.
The I/O Tester 2 is connected to the sensor input of the pH meter. The certified digital voltmeter
remains connected to the I/O Tester2 by means of parallel banana/laboratory cables during the
entire measurement.
Each voltage value is measured with the digital voltmeter, compared with the displayed value on
the pH meter and entered in the table of measured values (See example section 2.4.).
Take the pH meter and remove the battery lid cover. Remove the two screws holding the battery
lid in position. Detach the lid and take out the batteries.
Connect the Portables Adjustment Adapter to the battery compartment of the pH meter. Make
sure that the lever on the connector is turned either to the left or to the right side of the connector
holding the springs back so that the connector can fit into the meter. The connector should be
properly seated in the pH meter and then locked by turning the lever so that it is aligned with the
connector lengthwise.
Make sure that the “On/Off” switch on the Meter Adjustment Box is in the position Off. Now
connect the Portables Adjustment Adapter to the Meter Adjustment Box.
Connect the external power supply to the “9 VDC In” of the Meter Adjustment Box.

Place the “Adjustment/Normal/Test” switch in position “Normal” on the Meter Adjustment Box.
Switch “On” the Meter Adjustment Box and press the “Read” button on the pH meter. The pH
meter should now do the display test and continue to normal measuring mode.
Connect the I/O Tester2 to the sensor input. Turn the knob on the I/O Tester2 to position
“DIRECT”. Short circuit the sensor input by turning the coarse voltage selector to position “0 mV”.
Choose the “+” polarity on the I/O Tester2.
Select the mV measuring mode by pressing the “MODE” key.
Make sure that the “Automatic Endpoint” function is activated by pressing the “A” key so that the
symbol appears in the display.
Turn the knob on the I/O Tester2 to “Direct” and switch on the I/O Tester 2.
Select the coarse voltage with the rotary switch on the I/O Tester2 and fine adjust the value on
the certified digital voltmeter with the “VOLTAGE-ADJUST” knob.
Select the polarity of the voltage with the “POLARITY” switch.
Start the voltage check with the stipulated values.
Press the “Read” key and enter the displayed value from the pH meter in the table of measured
values after the automatic endpoint symbol has confirmed a stable value.
See example in section 2.4.

2.4. Calibrating the recorder output

This is only performed on the models MP125 and MA130. Connect the digital voltmeter to the
recorder output. The voltage applied with the I/O Tester2 at the sensor input is calibrated at the
recorder output. Maximum permissible error +/- 10 mV.

Examples of the table of measured values. (MP125 in example).

(The values “After Adjustment” result from a second calibration for the certification).

2.5. Calibrating the temperature input

The certified temperature resistors of Calibration Set ME-51302410 is used to calibrate the ATC
temperature input of the ph meter. The calibration is carried out in the user mode of the pH meter.
The following temperatures are calibrated.:

0°C / 25°C / 50°C / 75°C / 100°C
Select the mV measuring mode by pressing the “MODE” key if that is not already active.
Connect the I/O Tester2 and cable ME-52300004 to the sensor input but leave the I/O Tester2
switched off.
Turn the knob to position “DIRECT” and the coarse voltage selector to 0 mV.
Make sure that the “Automatic Endpoint” function is activated on the pH meter by pressing the “A”
key so that the symbol appears in the display.
Take the certified reference resistor for 0°C and connect it at the ATC connector socket of the pH
meter.
Press the “Read” key and wait for the automatic endpoint to acknowledge a stable result.
Note the value in the pH meter display and enter it in the table of measured values for the
temperature input. See example in section 2.5.
Select the next value of the certified temperature resistors and perform a new measurement until
all values have been entered.
