1. What are natural disasters?
A. Natural disasters or calamities show the destructive powers of nature.
These are disasters that are caused by natural forces. It also means things
that happen and are beyond our control.
2. What is a volcano?
A. A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust through which molten rock
material or magma comes out.
3. What are cyclones? Which states in India are prone to cyclones?
A. A cyclone is also a natural disaster. During a cyclone, winds blow at a very
high speed and this is accompanied by very heavy showers. In India, the
coastal areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra and the states of West Bengal,
Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu are usually affected by
cyclones.
4. How do floods occur?
A. Floods are usually caused by very heavy rainfall that causes a river to
overflow its banks and the water spreads to the surrounding areas.

drought.

stored in monsoon can be used in tough times
(iv) growing drought resistant crops like millets, maize and sorghum
(v) spraying water on the base of the plants so that less water is used
2. You live close to a volcanic zone. How do you prepare yourself for a
volcanic eruption?
A. We can prepare ourselves for volcanic eruptions in the following ways -
(a) by listening to radio or watching television for any kind of warning
(b) by moving to a safer place
(c) by always keeping a bag ready with basic things
(d) by staying away from the lava and hot gases as they are harmful. By not
returning to the area unless asked to by the authorities
(e) We should always have helpline numbers for immediate help and
emergency.

A. An 'earthquake drill' is a common feature in the schools of Japan because
earthquakes occur frequently in Japan. The students are trained to face
earthquakes. They practise hiding under tables and chairs to protect
themselves during the earthquakes.
