Science Paper 2 Year 6

The document consists of a series of science investigation tasks involving sound production from a musical instrument, magnet strength measurement, and parachute performance analysis. Each section includes experimental procedures, results, and questions for students to answer based on their observations. The tasks are designed to assess understanding of physical principles related to sound, magnetism, and air resistance.

1 Chen makes a model of a musical instrument.

The model is shown in the diagram.

metal rods
Chen plucks the piece of elastic.

The instrument makes a sound with a quiet volume and a low pitch.
(a) Describe how the instrument makes a sound.
[1]

(b) Chen stretches the piece of elastic so that it is tighter.

Chen plucks the piece of elastic with more force than before.
Describe the sound the instrument makes now.

[2]

(c) Chen replaces the piece of elastic with a thicker piece of elastic.
He plucks this thicker piece of elastic.
Describe the effect on the pitch of the sound the instrument makes.

2 Yuri investigates the strength of different magnets.

In his first experiment he:

 step 1 - puts a plastic bag around a magnet

 step 2 - dips the magnet into iron powder

He repeats the experiment three more times.

Each time he uses a different magnet.

Here are his results.

3 Blessy investigates model parachutes.

She:

 drops each parachute from a height of 2 metres

 measures the time it takes for each parachute to reach the ground.

She uses four different parachutes.

Each parachute is made from a different material but has the same surface area.

(d) Bessy does one other experiment to show the percentage of gases in the air.

She uses a nylon parachute with a larger surface area than the other
parachutes.

Predict the time it takes this parachute to reach the ground.
