Why do you want to become a nurse?
Nurses are doctor’s partners in hospitals. They are modern heroes of today as for some
times they risk their health and safety in order to save and cure. Ever since I was I child, I was
determined and had always dreamt of being a nurse. Everything about nursing amazes me, and
the passion overflows. Their uniforms are not what makes them so pure, but their will &
determination to help patients with regards to health issues. I want to become a nurse. And as
cliché as it may sound, yes, I aspire to be one of the front liners of this very modern day. I
envision to work towards creating a physically healthy and safe community. Personally, I also
want to be a nurse so I could be of help and provide medical care to my family. I am well-aware
that studying nursing & its practice is complex & hard. However, I try my hardest to succeed in
Allah’s will for I know I will not benefit alone, but my loved ones & fortunately, my community.
1. How did you feel about what you saw on the screen?
I felt mixed emotions of anger and sympathy. Watching the video of the bombing triggered
furiousness towards those who did the bombings, whilst feeling the sympathy & sadness for
those who were victims & affected individuals. It was inhumane & unfair. Although the reason
why the bombing in Hiroshima can be unveiled through research, confusion will be drawn still.
2. What violent acts do you notice?
The act of using atomic bombs, dropping them into an area (Hiroshima) within public range &
with numerous people in it was already a violent act, overpassing human rights to safety &
security. Regardless of the causes of the bombing, their acts will never be just & validated
3. If those acts of violence are diseases, do you think they are curable or at least preventable?
If that violent act of bombing causing life to be lost and affected is a disease, I say they are
eventually incurable, but at some point preventable. They are incurable in such ways that they
are ought to do the act, upon order and their very own will & choice. While they are incurable,
these violent acts can at least be prevented when undergone through rehabilitation if possible,
while the other party (victims) will experience trauma and life-long anxiety, fortunately, therapy
can help as well.
A. POETRY
1. A. What details did Marlowe use to create an idealized portrait of the rural life of
shepherds?
Reading through the lines from Marlowe’s poem, one would probably wonder and want
to live a rural life for some time. This is because the poem seemingly created an all-
pleasing imagery of a shepherd’s rural life. To start with valleys, groves, hills, fields, and
mountains, the author referred to these peaceful scenic natural landscapes as where
shepherds have luxury to experience at the beginning of his poem. Creating reality
out of words, he also made use of rivers, falls, the sound of birds singing, beautiful
flowers – roses, posies and myrtle, to further illustrate the underrated beauty of living a
rural life. Towards the fourth stanza, Marlowe finally gives light to using wool to create
clothes which apparently comes from the lambs they have.
2. What qualities do you think made Marlowe’s poem so popular and intriguing? Support your
claims with evidence from the lines of the poem.
Marlowe’s “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” is one of the pastoral poems that shed
light to the supremacy of pastoral poetry which in fact should be recognized. Not only is
the authenticity and the credibility of the author itself made the poem popular, but the
poem’s message that itched the interest of young souls and minds. The structure of the
poem is simpler compared to sonnets such that of William Shakespeare, however, digging
deeper to the structure of the poem, its simplicity not necessarily depicts that the
composition is lacking, just like the last words that rhymes in every line as a pattern. For
I instance, roses – posies, kirtle – myrtle. The poem itself gathers numerous
interpretations, one of which is known is “men pursuing women with material things,
exaggerated words and promises which most likely ends up unrealistic”. This can be
drawn from the lines “And I will make thee beds of roses, and a thousand fragrant posies”
and “A gown made of the finest wool”.
3. In Raleigh’s poem, “The Nymph’s Reply” under what conditions might the nymph agree to
live with the shepherd?
If one maiden is to listen to Marlowe’s poem, the response could be either similar of
largely connected. If one is to be given a hyperbolic offer for love, it will be deemed
impossible. In Raleigh’s poem, the nymph opposed every line the shepherd said. That the
beauty and gifts of nature and scenery in time will wither no longer please them, that the
material things – roses, dresses, shoes and gowns will be destroyed and forgotten. Ff his
love surpasses the changes in time, that despite age and years, they are still living in glee,
then may be with or without the offers of nature and material things, she might consider
to live with the shepherd.
B. STORY/NOVEL
1. In the story “The Wedding Dance” what good ending can you make in this story?
The plot do happen even in today’s world. In some cultures, one man is allowed to marry
another woman, which I am totally against to, but the tribe in the story follows a different
principle. It serves only right that Awiyao and Lumnay have to separate if the husband is to
marry another, because it will create chaos and disorder for a household to have two wives.
What’s wrong is the tribe’s reasoning, for requiring a man to have a child, thus leaving the wives
whom were challenged with infertility being casted away. If I were to create a new ending for
this story. I would have Lumnay go to the dance and declare her opposition towards the
marriage. Awiyao will be have her back when the elders of the tribe try to reason with Lumnay.
The two will leave the tribe as a consequence, they will both run off to the mountains, live with
the abundance of nature, then pray to the Gods to grant them a child, after all, patience is virtue,.
So towards the end, they will have a child who will be a skilled, brave and noble man which will
be admired by the people of their tribe, which will bring honor to bo his parents. Since it was
confirmed that both Awiyao and his ex-wife loved one another, it would not be an issue for both.
2. Give at least 2 significant themes in the novel “Silas Marner” by George Eliot. Cite instances
from the story to prove your claim.
2 significant themes seen in George Eliot’s novel “Silas Marner” are: Faith and fear.
Loss of faith is evidently depicted in the after Silas had to leave Lantern Yarn after experiencing
betrayal and the state where there is not any place nor anyone to depend on. He was taught by his
mother to trust the highly God and see good in men, and yet, he was accused by his own friend,
left alone by the church and God. Moreover, he got back to track and lived a better life when he
took Eppie in his household.
Fear is another theme we can foresee from the novel. Similarly, the concept of fear was seen in
Silas’ character after being accused. The same thing happened to Godfrey Cass who feared to be
subjected and cornered so he refused to reveal that he in fact has a wife and a daughter which
happened to be Eppie, Silas’ adopted daughter.

Marxism is a philosophy applied and used in context of social, political, and economic
systems. It circulates around a political and economic system centered to communism. It
critically emphasizes the effects of capitalism on the labor, productivity and economy that shapes
a society. It argues that revolutionary communism is the after-effect of the gap and competition
in the social classes. The struggle between capitalists, bourgeoisie, proletariat, and workers

ownership. It introduces equality, union of the classes to have rights. As opposite to capitalism
that promotes competitions.

Philippine Pop Culture
Sir Darence Cruz
Pop culture or extensively called Popular Culture describes the modern culture. It
involves cultural elements and preferences transmitted with the media, society, and youth
interconnectedly. The Filipino pop culture is heavily influenced by mass media, as per union of
Filipino preferences it permeates the Filipino lives. Pop culture is not limited to
entertainment/music but includes sports, news, politics, fashion, technology, and slang. A writer
in CNN Philippines wrote an article entitled “The decade-ender issue: 10 years of Filipino Pop
Culture on December 23rd of 2019. How do we sum up the entire decade of 2010 to 2020? The
2010s was a decade of immense change, in Philippine pop culture driven by many factors. Even
in 2022, up to this day, Philippine pop culture is influenced by these trends. In the areas of
entertainment and music industry in the later years of the decade, Indian films joined the
Filipino’s taste with Hollywood and Korean dramas in list. Local music gained local support and
recognition, Moira’s heart shattering songs made its way to Filipino youth’s hearts, food trends
took over the country’s line. In hindsight, throughout the years, the pop culture was in
transformation. Fashion was immensely influenced by other nation’s culture and styles.
Cardigans, bonnets, crocks, sleep wears and attires originally from Korea, branded clothes from
Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Guess, Prada, Balenciaga and etc. were popularly used and bought. BTS
meals were sold out since the K-pop boy band’s fame. Memes were thrown everywhere, almost
for every social media platforms, for pure fun, for judgments, and unfortunately for belittling and
sometimes bullying. The Ice-Bucket challenge, the fad that raised almost billions for a purpose,
and the Filipino’s love for Milk tea that eventually led to building of not one but numerous
branches and refreshment stores, cafes, and restaurants. These trends are cyclical. They come as
they go. The Filipino’s union in ideologies and similarities in preferences, and as well as their
mindset of “Sumabay sa uso” widens the range of these trends.

A. A, B, C and D robbed a bank. When they are about to flee, policemen arrived, An armed
confrontation ensued. If one of the robbers was killed by the policemen, what crime was
committed? Justify your answer.
If we ask those who are not accustomed with the law, they would say that it was simply
robbery and that those who were proven guilty by witness and evidence shall be taken to jail.
However, given the circumstance, the crime committed is actually robbery with homicide. Upon
their flee, coincidentally, policemen arrived and an armed confrontation ensued. These robbers
probably had themselves armed either illegally (without license) or not, and had an encounter
with the policemen which led to one of them, ended up killed. Robbery with homicide is
declared, under Article 294(1) of the revised penal code, when there is death upon intervening
with the commission of the crime, may it happen that the victim of the homicide is one of the
robbers, it is still homicide. The decision should fall under the penalty for robbery with
homicide, which are:
B. If the killer of a child less than three days old is his father or mother, what crime was
committed? Explain your answer.
This crime is one of the most murderous, immoral and non humane crime that could be
committed by a human being – more of a parent. The crime committed is infanticide under
Article 255 of the Revised Penal code. This is consequent with sentence to reclusion perpetua,
with a required penalty of 100,000.00 for civil indemnity and another 100,000.00 each for moral,
exemplary and temperate damages. When a parent intends to kill his/her child for any reason,
this is considered infanticide, punishable by law, irregardless of the parent’s situation unless
accidental and/or mentally incapable.
C. A priest had sexual intercourse with a girl twelve years and one day of age. What crime was
committed? Explain your answer.
With the age of the victim and the circumstance, the crime committed is not subjected to
rape, but rather of qualified seduction. A female over 12 and under the age of 18 is considered
minor in the Philippines, however, the age of consent starts at 12. If and only if it is proven that
no violence and force was done by the accused to lure the victim of engaging with him to sexual
intercourse, it is not rape, rather a case of qualified seduction. This falls under the Article 443
paragraph 1 of the Revised Penal code, which leaves the seducer imprisoned for 1 year, 8 months
and 21 days.
“Death under exceptional circumstances” is stated under the Article 247 of Act No. 3815
otherwise known as the Revised Penal code. This is declared when death or physical injuries are
inflicted to victims under special circumstances. This can be for instance a legally married
individual of the Philippines inflict any serious injury to his/her spouse upon surprisingly finding
out adultery or sexual intercourse with another person. This leads to destierro or banishment
which can be usually seen as a protection rather than punishment.
E. A city mayor utilized a prisoner’s services for domestic chores in his house. What crime was
committed? Explain.
CRITICAL APPROACH
What do we read?
The written text is a creative non-fiction, retelling a story of someone who's work is seen
immoral as it involves deprivation of human security but actually is forced to do so in order to
live. We must appreciate the literature there is. Know what we are reading, the themes and all
elements involved to have a better understanding of the texts..
Why do we read?
We read these types of stories for us to see the underlying hardwork, self-loath and self-pity these
type of people feel and go through, the other side of their stories. This gives us a deeper sense of
human understanding. Generally, reading gives us learnings and lessons we might not encounter
realistically.
How do we read?
We read with our clear minds, open to the writer's conveying of messages and understanding
what is behind the text we read. We read with the will to learn from the literature there is to read.
When we read, we do not simply utter words or say them in our minds, we critically see
underlying conspiracies and meanings.
FORMALISM
A. How is the work's structure unified?
Considering the plot/storyline, the structure with which the story is written is well-executed.
Beginning with creating a hook for reader's attention to be garnered, skipping to describing the
story's context and environment, to the main character's description, the story itself, the conflict
that is established and the very ending which leaves to the writer's own imagination, this well-
structured text is to its finest, or at the very least, almost perfection.
B. How do various elements of the work reinforce its meaning?
The message which the writer wants the reader to understand is well-delivered as evident as the
earliest introduction. The point of view used (1st person POV) appropriately delivers what the
story is about upon using the pronoun"I". The characters involved are settled with their roles to
interconnect with the theme, the conflict through a man vs. self and man vs. nature form
forwards the meaning of this literature. That is - these people which we see as impure are
actually humans, able to feel self-pity and self-loath just as how we feel towards them. Overall,
the elements integrates with the storyline to imply the overall meaning.
C. What recurring patterns can you find?
This might seem cliche but the overuse of the pronoun "I" is very evident. This also impliesnthat
the story circulates around the main character itself. All statements saidnand narrated by the
character herself is accompanied with a strong feeling of shame.
D. How does repetition reinforce the theme?
Repetition in a literature, or in texts implies emphasis. When it is applied in a literature, it gives a
highlight to what the story wants the reader to absorb. That is - upon stating the same thing or
using the same words and structure, it obviously desires the reader to go through that detail and
understand its significance in the text.
E. Is there a relationship between the beginning and the end of the story? Explain.
There certainly is. A good story begins and ends interconnectedly. When it does not, it appears to
be irrelevant and confusing. This story starts with the first character's claim that the job she has
(night job) is never her choice, it was never in her list and that she was forced to take on, in fact
she hated it This corresponds with the end that she was a student, who happened to have the
night job to provide for her and her mother's living. She have yet to endure, although she knows
she will soon stop.
F. How do the various elements interact to create unified whole?
The characters, the setting (place and time), the plot, the theme as well as the conflict have to be
related in order for a story to be structured well. The setting has to be appropriate with the theme,
that is night job - means at night time, and the job hasnto happen in a motel etc. The characters
has to be closer to the theme, and similarly, the plot and conflict goes together to create an
interesting story. Without all these elements meeting at some point, the text will not turn out the
way it did.
Hi. This is __________. A 2nd year student taking up the degree program Bachelor or ......
Growing up, I've been in stages of self-doubt and self-questioning just as most adolescents and
teenagers went through. I myself experienced the hurdle, and as I age, I learned a lot. In our
challenging years, we will have to reset our thoughts on how we should see our selves because
this will define how we make an image, how we communicate and carry ourselves upon building
relationships. When we see ourselves in the most affirmative sight, we create an image which is
genuine yet pleasing as well. Image management is never an easy task. For one to reach a level
where we can convey our best personalities, we start from within. Our concept of who we are
and what purpose do we live on inevitably affects our self-image, where image management
relies on. Our personalities are being reflected when we communicate. Socializing manifests a
good avenue for the conduct and etiquette we've been raised with to be shown. How we are
valued in society is highly interdependent to how we carry ourselves. So stand firm, chin up,
gather confidence, and appreciate what you have because no one will do it for you.
1.
Never will it cease to happen. Issues will always be created. All eyes are set towards one. No
matter how we behave ethically or try our best not to be involved in any injust, unpleasing
circumstances, we will always be linked to issues where our images will be ruined. However,
what matters is what is real. When we are not guilty and that we are genuine, we will not be
bothered by "created" issues, nor by any situation where our reputation is at risk. We have to
remember that those who knows us better, knows what we are and what we are not capable of
doing. If given opportunity to clear our names, we must. But we do not have to explain ourselves
to people who are close-minded and have settled with the assumptions and judgements about us.
Stay calm, our silence does not always mean guilt, rather it may show we are confident that we
are Innocent.
2.
Throughout the years, I have had the most important realization about myself. that I am resilient.
I have proven myself in many ways and situations where my will and perseverance is tested. I
am resilient in a way that I no longer box myself in the misfortunes I go through, I move
forward. My resiliency is evident in situations where I do not bow down, stop, raise my flag in
the challenges lofe throws at me. At times i may weaken, but the resilient spirit comes out and
keeps me going. This is a very good quality useful for any profession. As a future ______, I can
make progress, improve and reach my goals. Given the shackles of any demanding situation, I
can stand up in the long run.
1. What is the main idea of the text?
The article's idea circulates around the low or income-poor households around the Philippines,
and their knowledge, attitudes and practices towards COVID-19. Through a survey, these
households were inquired with regards to what extent do they know avout COVID-19. In terms
of possible transmission route, precentive measures and acceptance of the existence of the virus.
2. Give the topic sentence of each paragraph.
First paragraph: With a need for an effective response and preparedness for income-poor
households towards the COVID-19 pandemic, an understanding of their perception must be
attained.
Second paragraph: To come up with the effective measures, KAP questions integrated to ICMs
program and evaluation system were used.
Third paragraph: From 166 communities, 2224 respondents were surveyed to identify
percentages of the sources of information, the transmission route and possible prevention
measure these respondents know of.
Fourth paragraph: Targeted health education and understanding KAPs are useful health response
strategies for LMICs.
3. Give at least 5 government public health responses to COVID-19.
1. Early implementation of lockdowns relevant to increasing number of patients in healthcare
institutions
2. Establishment of quarantine facilities utilized by national, local and government units
3. Increased disease surveillance such as contact-tracing
4. Improved public health interventions and health education, relaying information to the public
5. Assistance to the private sector in operatio, ensuring and providing job opportunities
regardless of the restrictions of the pandemic.
4. How do Philippines' public health response differ from other countries?
Given that the Philippines is still a developing country in progressive years of trying to develop
it's resources, and that our healthcare system which is directly influenced by the economy is still
on its lowest, our public health response is different and shall be more strict, intensified and
responsive. Since we still belong to the poor countries and our health system is fragile, that
contributes to how public health response should be given.
5. Do you think that the public health response of the government should be improved? why?The
status we are in right now gives us a prior idea on the effectiveness of the government's public
health response. We have spent two years trying to survive from the shackles of the pandemic.
While other countries did it earlier, we have lost so many lives before we have come to this
extent. Apart from the fact that the Philippines itself is at risk the government's response is not
very effective as well. If so, would we waste 2 years? Strict implementation of the rules and
health measures should have been imposed, the government could have provided for the income-
poor households while we were in lockdowns for aside from the death caused by the disease, it
also resulted to death caused by hunger.
LIKES/DISLIKES The movie itself is fulfilling, light plot twist and appropriate actors
to play their characters. The portrayers are effective and very
dynamic in showcasing the highlights of their character-intended
play. The languages are not foul. The setting was good overall.
RECOMMENDATION For people who are hopelessly romantic, watching this movie will
be a taste of heaven. If you want to rest from watching thrillers,
watch this movie to give you ease. Its not much of your time, but it
will eventually be worth the watch.
REFLECTION:
The part of the lesson which help me understand more of the topic is the presentation of
“How to write an effective movie review”. Because of it I was able to differentiate the parts of a
movie review conveniently.
The task which I found difficult, and challenging is the third learning task writing a
movie review because I had to rewatch the movie, outline the plot, think of recommendations
and character improvement.
I realized that learning how to write a critique like a movie review could be helpful when
we inform others about the film and its ideas, especially those films with great plot twists and
moral lessons.

BIOGRAPHY
PRESIDENT RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was born on March 28, 1945 in Maasin, Southern Leyte to
Vicente Duterte and Soledad Roa who were both civil servants. His mother was a public school
teacher while his father was a government worker. Duterte traces his roots to the Visayas. He
spent his early years in Danao, Cebu, the hometown of his father. But his lineage has also direct
ties from Mindanao as his mother hails from Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte while his paternal
grandmother was a Maranao.
In 1949, when Duterte was four years old, his family resettled in the then-undivided Davao
where his father Vicente later entered the political arena and was elected governor of the
province and served from 1959 to 1965. Duterte graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Political Science at the Lyceum of the Philippines University and obtained a law
degree from San Beda College of Law in 1972. He passed the bar exam that same year. He
served as special counsel and later on became a city prosecutor at the City Prosecutor’s Office in
Davao City from 1977 until 1986, when he was appointed as OIC Vice Mayor of Davao City.
He ran and successfully won the mayoralty post in 1988. Since then, Duterte has not lost an
election. He is among the longest-serving mayors in the Philippines and has been Mayor of
Davao City for seven terms, totaling more than 22 years. He also served as vice-mayor and as
congressman of the city’s first congressional district. On May 9, 2016, Duterte won a landslide
victory as the 16th President of the Philippines, with 16.6 million votes, the highest number of
votes won by any Philippine president before him, with a margin if 6.6 million votes from the
second placer. He was officially proclaimed by a joint session of the Philippine Congress on May
30, 2016. He is the first President from Mindanao, and the first local chief executive to get
elected straight to the Office of the President.

I am Gene Geralde Gonzales, I was born on May 2, 1971 in Baguio City, Philippines. We are
seven siblings in the family. I am the seventh child. My mother’s name is Fe Geralde Gonzales,
she is from Cebu City and my father’s name is Mario Dy Gonzales, he is from Legaspi, Albay. I
took my elementary education as well as my secondary education at Saint Louis School of
Campo Filipino located at Naguilian Road Baguio City. I had a happy childhood living with my
parents and my siblings. During weekends, we usually spend our day in the park. We helped each
other in our daily activities. My family was a happy and a loving family.
During my high school days, I usually spend my free time in the library together with my
friends. Reading has been an important part in my life. I have always loved reading since reading
entertains, educates and informs. Reading interesting novels such as fiction books has been part
of the entertainment aspect of my reading history. I love the way stories are told in books and as I
read, I often get overwhelmed and enter the scene being explained in the story. At times I feel I
am watching live scenes. This entertains me!
Our school was exclusively for girls and because of that I find it hard to communicate with the
opposite sex. We usually spend our summer vacation in the hometown of my mother, which is
located in Minglanilla Cebu City. My hobbies are reading books, biking, watching movies and
also cross stitching. I also spend my free time hanging out with my friends. My dream was to
become a nurse. I was able to pass the entrance examination at Saint Louis University and I had
my first year as a nursing student. I wasn’t able to pass one of the major subjects so I had to
transfer to another school. I had to take a summer class for my back subject at Pines City
Educational Center and from that time I continued my studies and graduated in the year 1992
with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, I had my self review and took the exam
for Civil Service Professional Level, wherein I was able to pass the exam. By the year 1993,
together with mycollege friends, we went to Manila to have our review and took our board exam
for nursing. While waiting for the result of the board exam, I worked as a volunteer nurse at
Antamok Mines.
My plan is to save for my future since I have no family and am single. Good friends, competitive
teachers and one wonderful family are the ones who mold me for who I am today. Everything
good I have inside of me, I get from them. I experienced lots of challenges that test my skills and
personality. All those challenges and problems that I’ve been through leaves a wonderful lesson.
Good days gave me happiness, bad days gave me experiences, which are both essential to life.
Success keeps me growing and failures make me humble.
FAIRYTALE
The Elves and the Shoemaker
Summary:
A poor shoemaker finds himself with only enough leather left to make one pair of shoes. He cuts
the leather before going to bed. The next morning, he is surprised to find the shoes finished. The
shoes are so well-made that a customer buys them for more than the usual price. The shoemaker
is able to buy enough leather for two pairs of shoes. He cuts the leather before going to bed and
again finds the shoes all finished in the morning. The shoes fetch good prices and the shoemaker
is able to buy enough leather for four pairs of shoes. This continues and the shoemaker soon
becomes a rich man.
One evening before Christmas, the shoemaker decides to stay up to see who is helping him make
the shoes. At midnight, as the shoemaker and his wife watch from a hiding place, two small
naked elves appear. The elves stitch up the shoes skillfully then run away when they are finished.
The next morning, the shoemaker's wife makes tiny clothes for the elves to thank them for their
help. The shoemaker also makes two pairs of tiny shoes as gifts for the elves. Then they put their
gifts on the table and hide to see what the elves will do. At midnight, the elves come and find the
gifts instead of the usual leather cutouts. They put on the clothes and the shoes then sing and
dance around in delight. They dance out of the house and are never seen again. Nevertheless, all
goes well with the shoemaker and his wife for the rest of their lives.
LEGEND
Once upon a time, there was a woman who lived with her daughter, Pina in a tiny hut in a
village. They were very poor and the mother worked day and night to make both ends meet. No
matter how hard she worked, she could never get any help from her daughter. Pina was a lazy,
spoilt kid who liked to play in the backyard all day. Whenever he mother asked for help, she
would always find an excuse by saying she couldn’t find the object needed to complete the task.
If her mother asked her to sweep the house, she would say that she could not find the broom,
even if it was right in front of her. Her mother always ended up doing all the work by herself.
One day, her mother became very ill. She called out to Pina and said, “Pina, Come here, I am
very sick. Can you cook some porridge for me? I’m so weak that I cannot get up!” Pina ignored
her mother and continued to playing the backyard. “Daughter, come over here this very instant,”
Pina’s mother mustered all her strength just to call her. Pina grudgingly stopped playing and went
inside the house. She poked her head into her mother’s room. “What do you want, Mama? You
really expect me to cook for you? That’s too hard!” Pina protested pouting and stomped her feet.
Her mother told her the recipe to cook porridge and she told her that whatever she would need
was there in the kitchen. Pina reluctantly left and went to the kitchen. Her mother could hear the
banging of the drawers and the cabinets.
After sometime, her mother heard her opening the back door and sneaking out into the backyard.
Her mother waited and waited. Finally, she called out to Pina again. “Pina, did you cook like I
told you to?” “No!” was the defined response. “Why not?” asked her mother very tiredly.
“Because I couldn’t find the laddle,” said Pina. “Oh, you lazy child, you probably didn’t even
look for it. What am I going to do with you, Pina? I’m so sick but I cannot even count on you,”
cried her poor mother. The mother wept bitterly. In her rage, she shouted, “I wish you would
grow a thousand eyes all over your head. Then, you can find what you’re looking for. Maybe
then, Pina, you won’t have so many such excuses!” As soon as she said this, there was complete
silence. Her mother thought, “She’s trying to be quiet so I can forget about asking her again,” she
sighed.
She was hoping that Pina would come back. Realizing the wait was futile, she slowly got up to
do the cooking by herself. When she looked out into the backyard, Pina was nowhere to be
found. She sighed again and said, “That lazy girl must have gone to her friend’s house. She
didn’t want to do any errands for me!” Exhausted, she went back to her room for a much needed
rest. Weaker she was, she tried to do everything she could.
Hours passed by and then days. Still there was no sign of her wayward daughter. With a heavy
heart, she thought Pina had ran away. When she recovered from her illness, the first thing she did
was look for Pina. No one had seen or heard from her. It was as if she was disappeared into thin
air. Also, read The Legend Of The Dream Catcher. Months passed and still, there was no sign of
her. The mother felt very bad for her angry outburst. She feared that she might never ever see her
daughter again.
One day, while sweeping the backyard, where Pina used to play, she noticed a very strange plant
growing at the very spot where she last saw Pina. By this time, the leaves of the plant had fully
opened. Inside, she saw this very strange yellow fruit. It resembled a child’s head with a
thousand eyes. She suddenly remembered the spiteful words she had said that day. With horror,
she realized in the same way, her mother’s love have spoiled her daughter. Her anger unwittingly
cursed her. Somehow, her daughter had turned into this plant.
To honor the memory of her beloved daughter, she named the fruit “Pina”. She took such loving
care of it like it was her own daughter. The fruit flourished so well that it bore more and more
fruits. It became very popular among the villagers and the entire country. Its name later evolved
to “Pimia” or “Pineapple” in English. That’s how the Pineapple came to be according to the
folklore. It was named after a very spoilt child who was cursed with a thousand eyes.
MYTHOLOGY
The Myth of Sisyphus
Sisyphus is probably more famous for his punishment in the underworld than for what he did in
his life. According to the Greek myth, Sisyphus is condemned to roll a rock up to the top of a
mountain, only to have the rock roll back down to the bottom every time he reaches the top. The
gods were wise, Camus suggests, in perceiving that an eternity of futile labor is a hideous
punishment.
There are a number of stories—ones which are not mutually exclusive—that explain how
Sisyphus came to earn his punishment in the underworld. According to one story, Zeus carried
off Aegina, a mortal woman who was the daughter of Asopus. Sisyphus witnessed this
kidnapping in his home city of Corinth. Sisyphus agreed to inform Asopus as to who had
kidnapped Aegina if Asopus would give the citadel at Corinth a fresh-water spring. In making
this deal and bearing witness against Zeus, Sisyphus earned the wrath of the gods while earning
earthly wealth and happiness for himself and his people.
Another story tells how Sisyphus enchained the spirit of Death, so that during Death's
imprisonment, no human being died. Naturally, when the gods freed Death, his first victim was
Sisyphus. It is also said that Sisyphus told his wife not to offer any of the traditional burial rites
when he died. When he arrived in the underworld, he complained to Hades that his wife had not
observed these rites and was granted permission to return to earth to chastise her. Once granted
this second lease on life, Sisyphus refused to return to the underworld, and lived to a ripe old age
before returning to the underworld a second time to endure his eternal punishment.
Camus identifies Sisyphus as the archetypal absurd hero, both for his behavior on earth and for
his punishment in the underworld. He displays scorn for the gods, a hatred of death, and a
passion for life. His punishment is to endure an eternity of hopeless struggle.
FOLKTALE
THE TURTLE AND THE MONKEY
BY JOANNA C. GALDONE & ILLUSTRATED BY PAUL GALDONE
Described as "a Philippine tale," this story of a turtle who finds a banana tree in the river and a
monkey who cheats her out of its fruit begins with a catchy folklore situation but ultimately trails
off in bits and pieces. As Turtle can't carry the tree to her garden by herself, she asks Monkey for
help and agrees to give him his share in return. Monkey then insists on splitting the tree now, not
the bananas later, and chooses the showier top half for himself. Though it is Turtle's half that
survives and bears fruit, once more she must turn to Monkey, offering him some of the bananas if
he will climb the tree and throw some down. Instead, he merely climbs up and eats his fill.
Snappy enough so far, the story needs only a fitting comeuppance, but Turtle's strewing thorns
and prickers around the tree and Monkey's painful hopping about on his descent doesn't quite
answer. Grafted onto this is a briar-bush routine, with Monkey threatening reprisal and Turtle
begging not to be thrown into the river. . . and then, when she is, paddling happily downstream,
the bananas forgotten. Even Galdone's drawings lack spirit, with repetitive, minimally varied
shots of Monkey and Turtle facing off against a slapdash tropical background.
SHORT STORY
The Necklace
The story ‘The Necklace’ was written seven hundred years ago by Guy De Maupassant in
France. Matilda Loisel lived in a small flat with her husband who worked as a clerk for the
Minister of Education. Matilda was a very pretty young lady. Neither did they live a luxurious
life nor were they poor. Matilda was very unhappy because she always thought that she was born
for all luxuries in the world but she had to live a petty and simple life.
Her husband brought an invitation to a dinner party organized by his office. He thought his wife
would be excited but instead, she was upset. She complained that she had nothing suitable to
wear to such a great occasion. Her husband generously agreed to give her four hundred francs
that he had saved to buy a new rifle to get herself a dress. Matilda became anxious in the week of
the party. On asking her she told her husband that she had no jewellery policy with her gown. He
suggested that perhaps she could borrow something from her friend Jeanne Forestier. Jeanne
heard her story of distress and she generously opened her box of jewels. Matilda borrowed a
sparkling diamond necklace.
Matilda and her husband attended the gala and had a great time. Matilda looked very pretty,
elegant, and graceful. Everyone at the party noticed her and they all wanted to be introduced to
her. She was so glorified by her beauty that she became very careless. They arrived home in the
early hours of the morning. When Matilda viewed her glory in the mirror, she realized the
necklace was missing. They searched for it everywhere in the house. They wondered if it fell in
the cab that brought them home but neither of them noticed the number. Matilda’s husband went
out to search the streets but returned empty-handed. He also went to the policeman and to the cab
offices to raise a complaint. He advertised in the newspaper and offered a reward. To buy some
time from Jeanne, Matilda wrote a letter that she broke the clasp of the necklace and so she sent
it for repair. In the meantime, they found a similar kind of necklace. The cost of the necklace was
thirty-six thousand francs. Her husband inherited eighteen thousand francs from his father and he
borrowed the rest of the amount from the moneylenders. Finally, they purchased the necklace
and Matilda gave it to Jeanne who did not care to look at it.
Matilda’s life changed dramatically in the next ten years. They moved to a much smaller
apartment where she cooked and cleaned herself. Her husband did multiple jobs and she also did
other work to pay all the money they had borrowed. After ten years, they were able to pay all the
money back but by then Matilda had aged a lot.
One day, Matilda met Jeanne Forestier. She decided to confess the truth about the necklace.
Jeanne was surprised to see Matilda’s state. Matilda told her that she had lost the necklace that
she borrowed from her and had to pay a huge amount for the replacement. Jeanne was shocked to
hear the entire story behind the necklace and she confessed that the necklace Matilda borrowed
was a fake, which was not more than worth five hundred francs.
FABLE
The story opens on a warm, sunny day in the middle of summer. A grasshopper is lying in a field,
enjoying the sunshine, singing and playing his fiddle. Suddenly, he notices an ant scurrying
through the field, carrying an ear of corn. The grasshopper, wanting to chat for a while, calls out
to the ant.
‘What are you doing? Come and talk to me for a while.’The ant shakes his head.
‘I’m sorry, I can’t stop, I’m too busy. I have to gather food for the winter.’ The grasshopper
laughs at the ant.
‘The winter is ages away! It’s the middle of summer, and there’s plenty of food,’ he says. ‘Come
and talk to me.’But the ant refuses to stop working. He spends all day scurrying backwards and
forwards across the field, carrying his supplies. The grasshopper watches on, thinking the ant is
missing a great opportunity to enjoy himself. The ant is obviously not having a good time, while
the grasshopper is completely content. All too soon, the winter comes. The weather is cold and
there is no food to be found anywhere. The grasshopper is hungry and has nothing to eat. He
knocks at the ant’s door, hoping the ant will take pity on him. The ant opens the door, and the
grasshopper can see plentiful supplies of food inside the house.
‘I’m so hungry,’ says the grasshopper. ‘You have plenty of food. Is there any chance you might
share some with me?’
‘No,’ says the ant. ‘You laughed at me for gathering food in summer. You’ll have to see yourself
through the winter.’So the grasshopper has to survive the winter on whatever meagre rations he
can find elsewhere
