Where Vs Which Relative Clause Explanation
RULE 1:
We can use which + verb
but we cannot use where + verb
EXAMPLES:
I live in London, which has some fantastic parks.
I live in London, where it rains a lot.
RULE 2:
Which if the verb in the relative clause needs a preposition (at, from, in, to, for, etc.)
Where if the verb in the relative clause does not need a preposition.
EXAMPLES:
The country which he stayed in is very hot.
The country where he stayed is very hot.
RULE 3:
Which if we are treating the subject like an object.
(evaluating it, doing something to it, from the outside)
Where if we are treating the subject like a place.
(doing some action inside it)
How to test this– if you divide the sentence, do you use “it” or “there”?
it– use which
there– use where
For example:
New York, which she likes, is a big city.
(New York is a big city. She likes it.)
The cottage, ________ they stay during holidays, is in the South of London.
The cottage, ________ they use during holidays, is in the South of London.
