Exp 5 R and RC Firing Circuit

The document outlines an experiment in the Power Electronics and Drives Lab focused on designing and setting up R and RC firing circuits to observe waveforms across load resistance and SCR. It details the apparatus required, principles of operation for both firing circuits, and the procedure for conducting the experiment. The results include observations of voltage waveforms for both firing circuits at specified firing angles.

EXP NO: 1 R AND RC FIRING

Date:
AIM:
Design and set up R & RC firing circuits and observe the waveforms across load
resistance and SCR.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

Sl.No Name of the item Specification Quantity

1 SCR TYN 612 1
2 POT 10K 1
3 Capacitor 2µF 1
4 Diode IN 4007 2
5 Resistor 100Ω,47Ω 1
6 Wire Wound Resistor 100Ω 5W 1
7 Transformer 230/12V 1

PRINCIPLE:

R Firing Circuit

Resistance firing circuit is simple and economical but its maximum firing angle is
limited to 90 degree. During positive half cycle diode D is forward biased and gate trigger
circuit draws a small current. Gate voltage Vg will be half wave DC pulse. The amplitude of
this pulse can be controlled by varying R. When the gate voltage reached the gate trigger
voltage Vgt, SCR is turned ON. When SCR is conducting, Vg is reduced almost zero value.
During negative half cycle diode is reverse biased; diode prevents the gate
cathode voltage during reverse bias and not to exceed the peak reverse gate voltage. Firing
angle can be varied from 0 to 90 degrees.
RC Firing Circuit

The limited range of firing angle control by resistance firing circuit can be overcome by RC
firing circuit. Here by varying resistor capacitor triggering circuit, firing angle can be
controlled from 0 to 180 degrees .

During negative half cycle capacitor charges to –Vm through diode D2, with lower plate
positive capacitor voltage remains constant (Vm) until Vs=0. During positive half cycle, SCR
is forward blocking state. Now capacitor voltage reaches Vgt, SCR is triggered.
During negative half cycle diode D1 prevents the breakdown of Gate to Cathode junction
Note for an RC circuit as R increases time constant T increases, Capacitor voltage reaches
VGT slowly. Firing angle will be large. As R decreases, T decreases, VC reaches VGT fast.
Firing Angle will be less.
