Urban legends are eccentric and humorous
stories which are passed from one person to
another . Urban legends are believed to be true
but are mostly made up stories. Which invokes
fear and disgust in the readers. Urban legends
often include moral lessons and exposing social
prejudices . The term “ Urban legends “ appeared
in folklore studies since the mid-20th century.
Which was popularized by Jan Harold Brunvand
in his book The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American
Urban Legends and Their Meanings which talks
about the most well known urban legends .
What is a myth?

The word myth is derived from the Greek word
“mythos” meaning story, words and fiction.
Myths are stories, which are commonly
associated with tradition and religion. Myths have
originated since the Prehistoric period. Myths
talks about society’s customs , beliefs, tradition
and civilization.
What is the difference between urban
legends and myths?
Both urban legends and myths are
stories ,but vary in origin . Myths are rooted from
ancient period which carries cultural belief and
often associated with Gods and supernatural
elements , whereas urban legends are modern
emerged from recent societal contexts which are
grounded from realistic settings and characters.
Myth conveys profound cultural significance and
tradition, while Urban legends serves as a
entertainment or warning.
