4.World Diabetes Day -2024 :

• Observed annually on November 14.

• This year’s theme :‘Breaking Barriers,
Bridging Gaps’.
• Diabetes is a chronic condition resulting
from either insufficient insulin production by
the pancreas or the body’s inability to use
insulin effectively.( Type 2 Diabetes)
• Insulin is essential for regulating blood
glucose levels, and without proper insulin
function, blood sugar can rise uncontrollably, a condition known as hyperglycemia.
• Uncontrolled diabetes, particularly over time, can damage various body systems,
especially the nerves and blood vessels.
• If untreated, diabetes can damage blood vessels in critical organs like the heart, eyes,
kidneys, and nerves. It raises the risk for severe health issues, including heart attacks,
strokes, kidney failure, and in some cases, permanent vision loss due to damaged
retinal blood vessels.
• Diabetes can also lead to nerve damage and poor circulation in the feet, resulting in
ulcers and, potentially, amputations.
• Symptoms: Increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, fatigue, and
unexplained weight loss.
• As per Indian Council of Medical Research – India Diabetes (ICMR INDIAB) study
published in 2023, the prevalence of diabetes is 10.1 crores.
Prevention:
• Adopting healthy lifestyle changes is the most effective way to prevent or delay type
2 diabetes. Recommendations for prevention include maintain a healthy weight, stay
physically active with at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily, follow a
balanced diet low in added sugars and saturated fats and avoid tobacco use.
Government steps :
• The Government of India has launched several proactive measures to tackle diabetes
as part of the broader National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-
Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) under the National Health Mission (NHM).

1.New Collective Quantified Goal” (NCQG):

• This term relates to “Climate finance” under Paris Agreement.

• The issue that is dominating in the CoP -29 Summit is -climate finance.
• Countries need to invest trillions of dollars to build clean-energy systems. This is a
major challenge for many developing countries.
• Hence under the Paris Agreement, governments agreed to set a new climate finance
target by 2025.
Paris Agreement says that-
“All parties Shall set a new collective quantified goal from a floor of $100bn per year,
taking into account the needs and priorities of developing countries”
• But negotiations over this “new collective quantified goal” (NCQG) for climate finance
in recent months have exposed deep divides in the UN climate process.
• Nations disagree on virtually every element of the NCQG like Amount of money that
needs to be raised, period of time, what it should fund etc.

1 Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG): :

• The gas which is obtained through the process of anaerobic decomposition of bio-
mass sources like agricultural residue, cattle dung, sewage treatment plant waste,
etc.is known as Bio Gas.
• The Bio-Gas is purified to remove hydrogen sulphide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2),
water vapour and compressed as Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG), which has methane
(CH4) content of more than 90%.
• CBG has calorific value and other properties similar to CNG and hence can be
utilized as green renewable automotive fuel. Thus it can replace CNG in automotive,
industrial and commercial areas, given the abundance of biomass availability within
the country.
• Chemically, CBG is the same as CNG — both are compressed methane — and have
the same calorific value. But, CNG is a by-product of petroleum, and CBG can be
produced from any biomass
• India’s first modern, self-sufficient gaushala with a state-of-the-art Compressed
