Unusual business ideas

Have you ever had an idea for a business and thought ‘That’s just too unusual – it would never work’?
Don’t be too quick to give up. Here are five businesses that made a lot of money, even millions, with ideas
that seemed unlikely to succeed.
Pet Rock is one example. In 1975, Gary Dahl invented Pet Rock as a kind of joke after his friends were
talking about the difficulties of looking after pet animals. He marketed his idea as a super easy pet. Each
rock came in a cardboard box like a pet carrier and had a training booklet. The many people who bought
the rocks probably thought it was a funny idea. He made almost $6 million in sales from his joke.
Another successful business idea came from watching children play. In 1958, two toymakers saw some
Australian children exercising with hoops and they developed the hula hoop out of plastic. It cost less
than $2. More than twenty million were sold in the first six months and it’s still a popular toy today.
Not all unusual business ideas are products. Some are services for customers. One man in Japan stays
very busy doing nothing at all. Shoji Morimoto is a ‘Do Nothing Rent-a-Man.’ He simply turns up to places
to do nothing. People pay him to congratulate them at the end of a race or to sit with them in restaurants.
The customer might be lonely or just want a quiet friend. Morimoto earns 10,000 yen, about $85, for each
appointment and has three appointments each day.
Another interesting service also started in Japan in 2008. The business allowed customers to smash
dishes and throw plates in a safe place. It relieved stress and anger. Now similar businesses have opened
in many other countries.
Finally, a business in Australia helps customers explore urban farming. For a few hundred dollars, anyone
can ‘rent a chook’ (or chicken). The company provides a chicken coop, chickens and food. Customers can
rent chickens for six weeks and then return them or decide to keep them. It’s an easy way to try a new
adventure in farming.
If these unlikely ideas can succeed, maybe yours will too.
