Internal Assessment Question paper

Form No. FEX - 2

Revn. 03

Program: B Tech. (ME) ID No.____________________

Session: 2023-24 Year: III Semester: V Examination: Class Test 1
Course: Naval Architecture 1 Course Code: UG11T4505 Durn: 1 Hr
Max. Marks: 20 Date: 28 Sep 2023

Instructions:
1. Answer all Questions.
2. Use blue / black ink only
3. Draw neat diagrams where required using HB pencil only
4. Start answering each section on a new sheet

Section A

1. Define buoyancy and reserve buoyancy. (2 Marks)

Buoyancy: An object that is partly, or completely submerged in a fluid experiences a net

resultant force upwards. This force is known as buoyancy and is equal to the weight of the
fluid displaced.

Reserve of Buoyancy: Reserve buoyancy is the difference between the actual displacement
and that which the ship would have if she were submerged to her freeboard deck. It is
expressed as a percentage as follows:

𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑢𝑝𝑡𝑜 𝐹𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑏𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑘 − 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑑 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑡 𝐿𝑊𝐿

𝑅𝑜𝐵 % = × 100
𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑢𝑝𝑡𝑜 𝐹𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑏𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑘

2. Explain Fresh Water Allowance. (2 Marks)

When a ship is loaded in fresh water, it is allowed to load to a draft slightly higher than the SLWL
so that when it travels to sea water it would float to the correct draught. This allowance is called
the Fresh Water Allowance or FWA

𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 (𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑠)

𝐹𝑊𝐴 = 𝑚𝑚
4 × 𝑇𝑃𝐶

3. A ship of length 200m has a beam of 22m and a draught of 7m. if the prismatic coefficient is 0.75
the area of waterplane 3500 m2 and mass displacement in salt water is 23000 tonnes, estimate (i)
Block Coefficient (ii) Waterplane area coefficient (iii) Midship area coefficient.
(3 Marks)

𝐶𝐵 = 𝐿𝐵𝑇 = 1.025 ×200×22×7 = 0.7285

𝐴𝑊𝑃 3500
𝐶𝑊𝑃 = = = 0.795

𝐶𝐵 0.7285

4. Determine the change in mean draft when a ship of 11500 tonne displacement and a TPC of 16.1
passes from water of density 1.008 tonne/m3 to sea water of density 1.020 tonne/m3
(3 Marks)

𝐴𝑊𝑃 1570.73

= −0.0855 𝑚 = −8.6 𝑐𝑚

The ship will rise by 8.6 cm (1 Mark)

Section B

5. What is the purpose of inclining experiment of a ship and when is it carried out?

Purpose: Find KG of the vessel. (01 Marks)

When: In the shipyard just after construction, in lightship condition. (01 Marks)

6. What is the significance of ‘GM’ for a Stiff Ship and Tender Ship?

A stiff ship is one which has a large GM. It implies large right moment which also means small
time period of roll, thereby making the ship uncomfortable for the crew. (01 Marks)

A tender ship is one which has a smaller GM. It implies smaller righting moment which also
means larger time period of roll, thereby increasing the angle of roll and making the ship
susceptible to capsize (01 Marks)

7. A ship of 10000 tonne displacement has a mass of 60 tonne lying on the deck. A derick, whose
head is 7.5 m above the centre of gravity of the lying mass, is used to place the mass on the tank
top 10.5 m below the deck. Calculate the shift in the vessel’s centre of gravity when the mass is:
a) Just clear of the deck (01 Mark)
b) At the derrick head (01 Mark)
c) In its final position. (01 Mark)

8. A ship of 6000 tonne displacement has its centre of gravity 5.9 m above the keel and transverse
metacentre 6.8 m above the keel. A rectangular double bottom tank 10.5 m long, 12 m wide and
1.2 m deep is now half filled with sea water. Calculate the metacentric height. (03 Marks)
