Activity
(5 mins.)
Guide Question
1. What do you notice?
Possible Answer:
The tree diagram shows the potential coronavirus chain of transmission.
2. What do you wonder?
Possible Answer:
Each dot represents an infected person. One infected person spreads the
coronavirus to others, who then spread it to others and so on.
3. What impact does this have on you and your community?
Possible Answer: Answers may vary.
4. How does Covid -19 spread in the community?
Possible Answer: Answers may vary.
5. What’s going on in this graph? Write a headline that captures the graph’
Possible Answer: Answers may vary.
4.2 Activity Activity No. 1: Exponential Growth and the Coronavirus Pandemic
(10 mins.) Direction: Look at the tree diagram and analyzed the graph. Fill in the table below
with the number of new infections each day based on the number of dots within
these first few days. Graph the pairs of numbers you obtained from the table.
Tree Diagram of Coronavirus Chain of Transmission
Table 1

Possible Answer: Answers may vary.
Analysis
Direction: Answer the following questions below based on the activity.
1. How many lines come out from each dot in the tree diagram?
2. What mathematical pattern do you notice from the table?
3. Explain how the infection patterns from the tree diagram give rise to the
mathematical pattern in the table?
4. Describe what happens to the number and rate of new infections over the time.
5. Hospitals have limited capacity and bed space. Using the graph, discuss why it was so
important in the early stages of the pandemic to follow social distancing guidelines
4.3. Analysis and flatten the curve.
(5 mins.) 6. Do you believe an exponential growth model is appropriate for modeling the initial
spread of Covid-19? Justify your answer.
7. If the form bx is used, b represents the base and x is the exponent. Then in this
situation, 2 would be our base and the number of days is represented by x.
The new table of values would be:
No. of day 1 2 3 4 5 6
No. of new infections f(x) 21 22 23 24 25 26
What is now the equation? f(x)=2x
8. What do you call the functions in which the variable appears in the exponent?
4.4 Abstraction DISCUSSION
(15 mins.) 1. What is exponential function?
Exponential functions are functions in which the variable appears in the
exponent. An exponential function with base b is a function of the form f(x) =
b or y = b where b > 0 , b ≠ 1. Just as in any exponential expression, b is
X X
called the base and x is the exponent. The base b is restricted to positive
real numbers to ensure that f(x) is always a real number. Also, base b
cannot be equal to 1, for if b=1, then f(x) = bx will be f(x) = 1, and will be a
constant function.
2. How do you describe the graph of the exponential functions?
The graph of an exponential function is a necessary tool in describing its
behavior and characteristics on its intercepts, asymptotes, and zeroes. A
graph can also provide insights as to real-life situation that can be
modeled by exponential functions. It can be observed that the function is
defined for all values of x, is strictly increasing, and attains only positive
y-values. As x decreases without bound, the function approaches 0. That
is, the line y = 0 is a horizontal asymptote.
Properties of Exponential Functions
The following properties of f(x) = bx, where b > 0 and b≠1, can be observed from
the graph:
(a) The domain is the set of all real numbers.
(b) The range is the set (0;+∞ ).
(c) It is a one-to-one function. It satisfies the Horizontal Line Test.
(d) The y-intercept is 1. There is no x-intercept.
(e) The horizontal asymptote is the line y = 0 (or the x-axis). There is no vertical
asymptote.
Example No. 1
Direction: Based on the first activity about the tree diagram of the coronavirus
chain of transmission, illustrate the exponential function of the new infection each
day. Construct the table of values and sketch the graph.
Table 1
DAY Number of New Infections
0 1
1 2
2 4
3 8
4 16
5 32
6 64
Construct the table of values using the equation f(x) = 2 x
1. f(x) = 2x
f(0) = 20 6. f(x) = 2x
f(0) = 1 f(5) = 25
2. f(x) = 2x f(5) = 32
f(1) = 21 7. f(x) = 2x
f(0) = 2 f(6) = 26
3. f(x) = 2x f(6) = 64
f(2) = 22
f(2) = 4
4. f(x) = 2x
f(3) = 23
f(3) = 8
5. f(x) = 2x
f(4) = 24
f(4) = 16
Sketch the graph
(no. of days, no. of new infections)
(0,1), (1,2), (2,4), (3,8), (4,16), (5,32), and (6,64)
Example No. 2
The half life of a substance is 400 years.
a. Give an exponential model for the situation.
b. How much will remain after 600 years if the initial amount was 200 grams?
Possible Answer
Y = 200 ( ½) t/400
t=600
y=200(1/2)600/400
y= 70.71 grams
