Many of us want more than beaches and nightlife when we’re
choosing a holiday destination. 1 ___ However, tourism can /9
have a negative effect on both the culture and the environment
of the places we visit. This means we have to make careful
decisions about where and how we travel.

Bhutan is a fairly small country with diverse scenery. 2 ___

The countryside is also home to a wide variety of wildlife
including tigers and monkeys. Tourists go there to see these
natural wonders as well as get to know the unique cultures and
traditions. Popular activities are trekking in the mountains and
rafting down the rivers which flow from the Himalayas.

While many countries have issues like too much pollution,

Bhutan doesn’t have this problem. 3 ___ There are a lot of
trees in Bhutan – approximately 80 percent of the country is

running down from the mountains. The result is that Bhutan
does less to damage the environment than other countries.

In order to keep pollution levels low, Bhutan does other things to

help protect the environment. 4 ___ This was because they
understood the damage that plastic can do to the environment. The
government is also trying to encourage more people to use electric

challenging because of the high cost of these vehicles.

Tourism is important to Bhutan because it brings a lot of

money into the country. 5 ___ They create a lot of waste as
well as increase traffic on the roads. That is why the

tourism while reducing the environmental problems.

Climate change is a big problem for people living in mountainous

parts of the world. 6 ___ They have lower levels of pollution than
other countries, but they know that everyone is responsible for
looking after the planet. They also realise that environmentally
friendly holidays are appealing to many tourists. Bhutan might be
more expensive than other countries, but visitors can be proud that
they are taking part in responsible tourism.
