Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that is available on the Internet and what people love about it is
that it can be edited by absolutely everybody.
When and how did it start?
It was founded in 2001 by a guy called Jimmy Wales. It started as a fancy idea, a kind of a hobby
and everybody is surprised how popular it has become and how many computer scientists it has
attracted. It has got a collection of about 1.8 mln articles, the majority of which are in English;
however, one can find some articles in over 200 languages. If it was a business, it would earn

How is it possible that articles that can be changed by anyone are correct?

Wikipedia has a team of over 13,000 people who are experts in different fields and who correct

Is it error-free?

information in Wikipedia and confirmed it was very reliable and that they didn't find many
errors. It was very good news for the founder as well as for all the users.
Why is it becoming so popular?
Like the whole idea of the Internet, it's also quick and available to everyone. The greatest thing

                                    SCHOOL OF THE AIR
Australia is an enormous country, but it has a population of only 20 million. Some families live
on farms, hundreds of kilometers from a town or city. Children from these families can’t travel to
school every day, so many of them use a special school: the Australian School of the Air.
There are twelve Schools of the Air in Australia and over 1,000 students use them. Students of
the School of the Air do not have lessons in classrooms with other students. They study at home
on their own. The teachers at the School of the Air prepare lessons and send them to the student
by post or email. The students have to work on these lessons for five or six hours a day, Monday
to Friday. They send their work to the teachers once a week and discuss it by radio or over the
Internet. They can also borrow books from the school library. The books arrive by post.
Once or twice a year, a teacher visits every student at home. The teacher spends a day with the
students, helps them with their work and discusses problems. The teacher often has dinner with
the family and stays for a night at the student’s house. Teachers and students can also meet at the
Sports Carnival. This takes place once a year on playing fields in Alice Springs. Students do not
have to go, but it is a great way for them to do sport together and to make friends.

Last week I made the mistake of visiting the village where I grew up. It was a small, friendly
community with two farms and a number of old cottages round the village green. I realized very
quickly that although in many ways it appears unchanged, in reality hardly anything is the same.
All the pretty cottages are there, of course, and both the picturesque farmhouses. But none of the
inhabitants are country people. All of them are commuters, who leave early every morning for
the nearby town. Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a farm these days; the land has been
sold and is managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little interest in the village
itself. There are a few new houses, but they have no local character; you can see the same style
anywhere in the country. The whole of the village, in fact, has been tidied up so much that it has
become nothing more than just another suburb.
