In engineering planning, we figure out all the electrical needs – from the wiring for the lights and

outlets, to the
power for the kitchen appliances, to the fire alarm system that keeps everyone safe. We carefully plan every
detail, thinking about how much power each part of the school will need, what kind of equipment is best, and,
most importantly, how to make it all safe and reliable for the students and teachers. It's like planning the nervous
system of the building, making sure everything connects and works together seamlessly.

Electrical power fixtures are devices that help us use electricity safely and efficiently. Here are the main types:
 Wiring devices: These include outlets (where you plug things in) and switches (to turn lights on and
off).

Lighting fixtures: These are things like ceiling lights, wall lights, and lamps.

Circuit protection devices: These are things like circuit breakers and fuses that protect your
home from electrical problems. 

Electrical panels: This is where the main power comes into your home and is distributed to
different areas.

When designing or installing switches and outlets, there are several basic standards to keep in mind to ensure
safety and functionality. Here are some key points:

1. Building Codes and Regulations:

 Compliance: Always adhere to local electrical codes and regulations. These codes vary by location and
are designed to ensure safety.
 Permits: In many cases, you'll need to obtain permits before starting any electrical work.

2. Safety First:

 Test for power: Use a voltage tester to ensure the power is off before touching any wires.
 Grounding: Ensure proper grounding of all outlets and switches to prevent electric shock.
 GFCI protection: Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets in areas where water is present,
such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas.

3. Placement and Accessibility:

 Height: Standard height for switches is typically around 48 inches from the floor, and for outlets, it's
around 12 inches. However, these can vary slightly depending on local codes and specific needs.
 Accessibility: Place switches and outlets in easily accessible locations, considering furniture placement
and traffic flow.
 Distance from water: Keep switches and outlets a safe distance away from water sources to prevent
electrical hazards.

4. Outlet and Switch Types:

 Amperage: Use outlets and switches with the appropriate amperage rating for the intended use.
 Specialized outlets: Consider specialized outlets like USB outlets for charging devices or tamper-
resistant outlets for child safety.

5. Aesthetics:

 Matching decor: Choose switches and outlets that complement the room's decor and style.
 Plate covers: Use appropriate plate covers to conceal wiring and provide a finished look.
