Guide Questions
1. What are the factors affecting the rate of reaction?
2. What is a collision theory?
3. What are two (2) ways to increase the rate of reaction?
4. How does temperature help to increase the rate of reaction?
5. How about Concentration?
6. How about the Surface Area?
7. How about the Catalyst?
COLLISION THEORY
It states that atoms or molecules must
collide with enough energy in order to
react.
The reactants in a chemical reaction
must also collide to form a new
product and produce molecules.
ACTIVATION ENERGY
A specific minimum energy
required for a reaction to
occur.
It is also the energy needed to
break the bonds of the
reactants to form new
products or new substances.
FACTORS AFFECTING
CHEMICAL REACTIONS
1. Temperature
Higher temperatures increase particle movement,
leading to more frequent and energetic
collisions. These collisions provide the necessary
activation energy, speeding up reaction rates. As
compared to a lower temperature

CHEMICAL REACTIONS
2. Concentration
Concentration is the measure of the number of particles of
solute contained in each volume of solution. Another important
factor influencing the frequency of collisions.
The greater the number of particles, the greater the collision.
When there are a great number of particles, there is a high
concentration leading to greater chances of collision. Thus, a
reaction will occur.
FACTORS AFFECTING
CHEMICAL REACTIONS
3. Particle Size or Surface Area
When solid reactants are present in small pieces,
reaction rates can increase.
The smaller pieces have a greater surface area, thus,
providing much greater contact among the reactants
and affecting more collisions.
FACTORS AFFECTING
CHEMICAL REACTIONS
4. Catalyst
The substance that alters the rate or speed of
chemical reactions is used to speed up a
chemical reaction, but there are also catalysts
that slow down a reaction. These are known as
inhibitors.

QUESTION
Why it is important to
refrigerate foods to avoid or
reduce spoilage?
ANSWER
Refrigeration's effectiveness in preventing food spoilage
directly relates to the factors affecting chemical
reaction rates: lowering the temperature drastically
reduces the kinetic energy of molecules, slowing down
both the metabolic reactions of microorganisms and the
enzymatic reactions within the food itself, effectively
inhibiting the processes that lead to decay.
