The benefits of doing arts and crafts
Many people know that having a creative hobby, such as arts and
crafts, has lots of benefits. It helps you express your feelings and thoughts and it
allows some time to be quiet and alone with yourself, though you can also take
part in arts and crafts groups.
People who have stressful jobs, like doctors and teachers, find it very relaxing.
‘For me, it’s a way to forget about the hard part of my job and focus on something fun’,
says Rita, a 32-year-old doctor.
All you need to start doing arts and crafts are a set of scissors, some paper and other materials, like beads,
ribbons and glue. Then you can find things to make on the internet. Many people have their own online
channels and you can follow them to get some ideas. They even show you how to make something,
step-by-step. Darren, 45, says: ‘I wasn’t interested in arts and crafts when I was young, but then I started
helping my daughter with all her school projects. I found it so enjoyable that I bought my own stuff.
It was cheap and I learned to make lots of things by watching videos online. I think I’ll join an arts and
crafts group.’
However, many people are turning to smartphones and social media at the end of a tiring day – so what is
the future of arts and crafts? Jacqui, 24, is creating an arts and crafts app. She says: ‘People really want to
be creative and the app will help them make things when they are moving around town, for example, in an
underground station, anywhere where they have access to wi-fi.’ Arts and crafts is more popular than ever
and it looks like it’ll stay that way in the future, too. Give it a try – it’s good for you!

1 Why is the writer writing this article? a Because you don’t need a lot of expensive materials.
2 How does doing arts and crafts help people? b To explain how doing arts and crafts is good for you.
3 What does Rita say about doing arts and crafts? c So people can be creative on their smartphones.
4 Why is it easy to start doing arts and crafts? d They spend some quiet time with themselves.
5 How did Darren learn how to make things? e It helps her feel better.
6 Why is Jacqui creating an app? f By watching videos online.

2 It’s one of the most arid regions on Earth. There are certain types of animals that can live through the

I have an extra bottle in the cupboard. My hands can get very dry from it, though. I think I’ll need to buy

4 I enjoy being outside and working with my hands. Watching all the leaves grow is wonderful, and the

5 There is a lot of traffic in parts of the city, so I am glad there are areas with no cars. For example,
between the town hall and the main square, there is a road where cars can’t go. Instead, you need to walk.
This street is nice because it is very quiet and there are lots of great cafés and shops.

6 I love how all the different sounds come together and how it can all be recorded in a studio for other
people to listen to. Of course, you need good microphones for the instruments, to get the best sound.
