Future Directions of Management Science and Operations Management authored by
Jack A. Fuller and James W. Denton of West Virginia University is a review of
applications for the Business Curriculum. The title itself covers the differentiation of
future direction between the fields of Management Science and Operational
Management. The review deals with Operations Management which is more
applicable to practical business while Operation Research/Management Science is
more used in military applications. It was also highlighted that the “future of
Management Science in the business curriculum may not be as bright” as Operation
Management in view of five trends related to globalization, supply chain, strategic
emphasis, growth of the service sector, and in changing employer requirements.
One of my reactions to the research paper that “Management Science in the business
curriculum may not be as bright” seems an overstatement. Management Science is a
broad topic that includes relevant contributions from diverse fields with a cross-
functional, multidisciplinary examination of advances and solutions supporting
enhanced strategic planning and management science. It uses the ideas and methods
of science, mathematics, statistics, and computing, which collectively are often
referred to as Business Analytics, to help managers make better business decisions.

including Accounting and Finance, marketing research, organizational theory, health
care, environmental protection, manufacturing & distribution, Supply chain
management, R & D / Innovation, and business strategy. There are several
assumptions or principles of management science that guide professionals in this
field. Almost any decision can benefit from the methods of management
science/analytics. It is like comparing an apple to a tree where the apple is Operation
Management, and the tree is Management Science.
On the Business practicality side, Operation Management is essential in every
business. Effective Operations management drive profitability, achieve-long term
success and win competitive advantage. I sympathize that Operation Management
should be given importance to the curriculum in business schools. Given the 5 trends
that have been elaborated, Operation Management has a wide and highly important
role in the business. And since not all can be an analyst, Operation Management has
been in demand in the business curriculum.
In conclusion, the future direction of Management Science and Operation
Management is both as bright in the business curriculum. They are both essentials
to practical business, and professional or career-wise Management Science offers a
good career, same on Operation Management where it is more focused on the
