A. Meaning of Multi-Grade Teaching/ Teaching Multi-Grade Class
What is Multi - Grade?
“Multi” means plenty, many, or more than one.
“Grade” means level.
Multi-Grade, therefore, means many grades
What is a Multi-Grade Class?
A multigrade class consists of two or more different grade levels inside a single-grade
classroom handled by one teacher for an entire school year.
It is called a Multi-age Group.
It is offered in elementary schools located in distant and sparsely populated localities.
It is generally found in rural areas and remote areas where enrolments are low, and
consequently economic justifications do not support the employment of one teacher for
each year level.
Schools with multi-grade classes are referred to as multi-grade schools.
According to Mulryan-Kyne (2007)
A multi-grade class contains two or more grade (year) levels where one
teacher has responsibility for teaching all the children in that class, regardless
of grade level.
The students in multi-grade classes normally keep their grade label, and their grade-level
textbooks and curriculum, and the teacher instructs students in their grade-level
programs across a range of curriculum areas at the same time.
A multi-grade classroom simply means that there is more than one grade in the
room, working independently or together, with each student working towards their
individual curriculum goals for their grade level. They are learning
simultaneously, both together and apart.
What is a Multigrade Teaching?
A Multigrade Teaching refers to the teaching of students of different ages, grades, and abilities
in the same group or room. It happens in schools where there are more grades than teachers.
B. Reasons for Multi-Grade Classes
1
What are the reasons for the existence of multi-grade classes?
In Multi - Grade schools a relatively small number of teachers try to be effective in their
educational work while dealing simultaneously with a few pupils of different ages, educational
levels and needs.

C. Basic Principles of Multi-Grade Teaching
Multigrade teaching is based on several basic principles about how children learn and how
teachers can teach effectively to respond to their needs.
1. Each child is unique.
No two children are alike. They may be of similar interests, needs and characteristics, but
still, they are different in many ways physically, emotionally, socially and even mentally.
2. Children learn best from experience.
Children learn from doing. Children in a multigrade class, like other children learn best
from their first-hand and concrete experience. They do this by exploring their
environment using all their senses as much as possible.
3. Children can and do learn well from one another.
Children learn well and better when they are together.
4. The role of the teacher in a classroom involves setting-up and managing a learning
environment that is conducive to learning and teaching.
Everything involved in the teaching-learning process makes up the learning environment.
It includes the curriculum, the instructional materials, the children, the teacher and the
parents.
5. The implementation of the school curriculum must take into consideration the varied
abilities, levels and interests of a particular group.
Learning competences, budget of work, lesson plans provide the sense of direction for the
teachers.
6. The value of any educational program will be judged according to how well it is able to
achieve the goals of the program–whether the children learn what they are expected to
learn and how well they have learned.
The way that the school and classroom are organized to achieve those goals makes a
great difference. The advantages of grouping children of different ages within one
classroom should be maximized to increase the chances of effective learning and enhance
the quality of the classroom as a learning environment.
7. The advantage of being in a heterogeneous group like a multigrade class is that children
who have certain strengths and weaknesses can be helped rather than be punished for their
weaknesses, and their strengths built on rather than wasted.
