Art 1 Aitel S.2 Assessment

This document is an assessment paper for Senior One Physics students at Cleverland High School, scheduled for November 2024. It includes five items covering topics such as the behavior of electric wires in different temperatures, global warming, temperature regulation for chicks, particle arrangement in states of matter, and gravitational force variations on Earth. Students are instructed to attempt four questions within a two-hour timeframe.

PAPER 1

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS;
 Attempt four (4) questions.
Item 1
Electric wires can be observed to vary in shape during cold and hot weather.
The photograph below was taken during hot weather.
Figure 1 Figure 2

Pipes
Task.
a) Explain why wires are seen to sag like this.
b) State and explain what will happen to the wires in cold weather.
c) Use figure 2 and explain why those pipes are connected to follow such a
path.
Item 2
Use the knowledge of physics as a S.1 and give.
a) The causes of global warming.
b) Effects of global warming and it’s similarity with a green house.
c) What people are doing to minimize the effects of global warming?
d) There has been an outbreak of malaria in your community and your friend
is admitted in hospital. You have been delivering a warm meal for her in
hospital, without using a food flask, how would you ensure that the food
you have prepared remains hot till you reach hospital.
Item 3
One day old chicks are vulnerable to extreme temperature. Opio is rearing chicken
on a commercial scale and he has bought 1000 one-day-old chicks.
a) Suggest possible causes of extreme coldness and hotness in the chicken
house.
b) Explain what Opio should do to regulate the temperature in the chicken
house.
c) Which instrument can Opio use to determine the temperature of these
chicken and give three reasons to why water is not used as a thermometric
liquid?
Item 4
The diagrams show the arrangement of the particles in a solid and in a gas. Each
circle represents one particle.

(a) Complete the diagram below to show the arrangement of the particles in a
liquid.

(b) Explain in terms of the particles, why gases are easy to compress.
(c) What are the differences between gases and liquids?
(d) List down any three types of force and instances where each of the force
occurs.
Item 5
Is the earth a perfect sphere or not? If not, how does it affect gravitational force
in different parts of the earth? Where would gravitational force be greatest and
where would it be least?
S.1 students have an argument about Mass and weight of the body. As a physics
learner, help S.1 learners to settle the argument.
