Deadlock

A process in operating system uses resources in the following way.


1. Requests a resource
2. Use the resource
3. Releases the resource
A deadlock is a situation where a set of processes are blocked because each process is holding a resource and
waiting for another resource acquired by some other process.
Consider an example when two trains are coming toward each other on the same track and there is only one track,
none of the trains can move once they are in front of each other. A similar situation occurs in operating systems
when there are two or more processes that hold some resources and wait for resources held by other(s). For
example, in the below diagram, Process 1 is holding Resource 1 and waiting for resource 2 which is acquired by
process 2, and process 2 is waiting for resource 1.

Examples Of Deadlock
1. The system has 2 tape drives. P1 and P2 each hold one tape drive and each needs another one.
2. Semaphores A and B, initialized to 1, P0, and P1 are in deadlock as follows:
 P0 executes wait(A) and preempts.
 P1 executes wait(B).
 Now P0 and P1 enter in deadlock.

wait(B); wait(A)

3. Assume the space is available for allocation of 200K bytes, and the following sequence of events occurs.

P0 P1

Request 80KB; Request 70KB;

Request 60KB; Request 80KB;

Deadlock occurs if both processes progress to their second request.


Deadlock can arise if the following four conditions hold simultaneously (Necessary Conditions)
Mutual Exclusion: Two or more resources are non-shareable (Only one process can use at a time)
Hold and Wait: A process is holding at least one resource and waiting for resources.
No Preemption: A resource cannot be taken from a process unless the process releases the resource.
Circular Wait: A set of processes waiting for each other in circular form.

Methods for handling Deadlock


There are three ways to handle deadlock
1) Deadlock prevention or avoidance:
Prevention:
The idea is to not let the system into a deadlock state. This system will make sure that above mentioned four
conditions will not arise. These techniques are very costly so we use this in cases where our priority is making a
system deadlock free. One can zoom into each category individually, Prevention is done by negating one of the
above-mentioned necessary conditions for deadlock. Prevention can be done in four different ways:
1. Eliminate mutual exclusion 3. Allow preemption
2. Solve hold and Wait 4. Circular wait Solution
Avoidance:
Avoidance is kind of futuristic. By using the strategy of “Avoidance”, we have to make an assumption. We need
to ensure that all information about resources that the process will need is known to us before the execution of the
process. We use Banker’s algorithm (Which is in turn a gift from Dijkstra) to avoid deadlock.
In prevention and avoidance, we get the correctness of data but performance decreases.
2) Deadlock detection and recovery: If Deadlock prevention or avoidance is not applied to the software then we
can handle this by deadlock detection and recovery. which consist of two phases:
1. In the first phase, we examine the state of the process and check whether there is a deadlock or not in the
system.
2. If found deadlock in the first phase then we apply the algorithm for recovery of the deadlock.
In Deadlock detection and recovery, we get the correctness of data but performance decreases.

Recovery from Deadlock


1. Manual Intervention:
When a deadlock is detected, one option is to inform the operator and let them handle the situation manually.
While this approach allows for human judgment and decision-making, it can be time-consuming and may not be
feasible in large-scale systems.
2. Automatic Recovery:
An alternative approach is to enable the system to recover from deadlock automatically. This method involves
breaking the deadlock cycle by either aborting processes or preempting resources. Let’s delve into these
strategies in more detail.

Recovery from Deadlock: Process Termination:


1. Abort all deadlocked processes:
This approach breaks the deadlock cycle, but it comes at a significant cost. The processes that were aborted may
have executed for a considerable amount of time, resulting in the loss of partial computations. These
computations may need to be recomputed later.
2. Abort one process at a time:
Instead of aborting all deadlocked processes simultaneously, this strategy involves selectively aborting one
process at a time until the deadlock cycle is eliminated. However, this incurs overhead as a deadlock-detection
algorithm must be invoked after each process termination to determine if any processes are still deadlocked.
Factors for choosing the termination order:
– The process’s priority
– Completion time and the progress made so far
– Resources consumed by the process
– Resources required to complete the process
– Number of processes to be terminated
– Process type (interactive or batch)

Recovery from Deadlock: Resource Preemption:


1. Selecting a victim:
Resource preemption involves choosing which resources and processes should be preempted to break the
deadlock. The selection order aims to minimize the overall cost of recovery. Factors considered for victim
selection may include the number of resources held by a deadlocked process and the amount of time the process
has consumed.
2. Rollback:
If a resource is preempted from a process, the process cannot continue its normal execution as it lacks the
required resource. Rolling back the process to a safe state and restarting it is a common approach. Determining a
safe state can be challenging, leading to the use of total rollback, where the process is aborted and restarted from
scratch.
3. Starvation prevention:
To prevent resource starvation, it is essential to ensure that the same process is not always chosen as a victim. If
victim selection is solely based on cost factors, one process might repeatedly lose its resources and never
complete its designated task. To address this, it is advisable to limit the number of times a process can be chosen
as a victim, including the number of rollbacks in the cost factor.

Deadlock ignorance: If a deadlock is very rare, then let it happen and reboot the system. This is the approach
that both Windows and UNIX take. We use the ostrich algorithm for deadlock ignorance.
Safe State:
A safe state can be defined as a state in which there is no deadlock. It is achievable if:
 If a process needs an unavailable resource, it may wait until the same has been released by a process to which
it has already been allocated. If such a sequence does not exist, it is an unsafe state.
 All the requested resources are allocated to the process.

Conditions for Deadlock in Operating System


 A Deadlock is a situation that involves the interaction of more than one resource and process with each
other. We can visualize the occurrence of deadlock as a situation where there are two people on a
staircase.
 Disadvantages in Deadlock
 Deadlock is an infinite Process it means that once a process goes into deadlock it will never come out of
the loop and the process will enter for an indefinite amount of time. There are only detection, resolution,
and prevention techniques. But, there are no Deadlock-stopping techniques.


Consider a simple scenario that includes two processes (Process A and Process B) and two resources
(Resource 1 and Resource 2).
 How a Deadlock Can Occur?
 Let’s see that both processes begin execution at the same time.
1. Process A obtains Resource 1.
2. Process B obtains Resource 2.
We are currently in the following situation:
1. Process A possesses Resource 1.
2. Process B possesses Resource 2.
Let us now see what happens next:
Process A requires Resource 2 to continue execution but is unable to do so because Process B is currently holding
Resource 2.
Similarly, Process B requires Resource 1 to continue execution but is unable to do so because Process A is
currently holding Resource 1.
Both processes are now stuck in a loop:
1. Process A is awaiting Resource 2 from Process B.
2. Process B is awaiting Resource 1 from Process A.
We have a deadlock because neither process can release the resource it is holding until it completes its task, and
neither can proceed without the resource the other process is holding. Both processes are effectively
“deadlocked,” unable to move forward.
To break the deadlock and free up resources for other processes in this situation, an external intervention, such as
the operating system killing one or both processes, would be required. Deadlocks are undesirable in operating
systems because they waste resources and have a negative impact on overall system performance and
responsiveness. To prevent deadlocks, various resource allocation and process scheduling algorithms, such as
deadlock detection and avoidance, are employed.

Necessary Conditions for the Occurrence of a Deadlock


Let’s explain all four conditions related to deadlock in the context of the scenario with two processes and two
resources:
Mutual Exclusion
This condition requires that at least one resource be held in a non-shareable mode, which means that only one
process can use the resource at any given time. Both Resource 1 and Resource 2 are non-shareable in our
scenario, and only one process can have exclusive access to each resource at any given time.
As an example:
 Process A obtains Resource 1.
 Process B acquires Resource 2.
Hold and Wait
The hold and wait condition specifies that a process must be holding at least one resource while waiting for other
processes to release resources that are currently held by other processes. In our example,
 Process A has Resource 1 and is awaiting Resource 2.
 Process B currently has Resource 2 and is awaiting Resource 1.
 Both processes hold one resource while waiting for the other, satisfying the hold and wait condition.
No Preemption
Preemption is the act of taking a resource from a process before it has finished its task. According to the no
preemption condition, resources cannot be taken forcibly from a process a process can only release resources
voluntarily after completing its task. In our scenario, neither Process A nor Process B can be forced to release the
resources in their possession. The processes can only release resources voluntarily.
Circular Wait
This condition implies that circular processes must exist, with each process waiting for a resource held by the
next process in the chain. In our scenario, Process A is waiting for Resource 2, which is being held by Process B.
Process B is awaiting Resource 1 from Process A.
This circular chain of dependencies causes a deadlock because neither process can proceed, resulting in a system
shutdown.
To summarise, in the context of two processes and two resources, all four conditions (mutual exclusion, hold and
wait, no preemption, and circular wait) must be met at the same time. Deadlocks are a major concern in operating
systems, and various techniques are used to avoid them to prevent, detect, and recover from them.

Bankers Algorithm

It is a banker algorithm used to avoid deadlock and allocate resources safely to each process in the computer
system. The 'S-State' examines all possible tests or activities before deciding whether the allocation should be
allowed to each process. It also helps the operating system to successfully share the resources between all the
processes. The banker's algorithm is named because it checks whether a person should be sanctioned a loan
amount or not to help the bank system safely simulate allocation resources. In this section, we will learn
the Banker's Algorithm in detail. Also, we will solve problems based on the Banker's Algorithm. To
understand the Banker's Algorithm first we will see a real word example of it.

Suppose the number of account holders in a particular bank is 'n', and the total money in a bank is 'T'. If an
account holder applies for a loan; first, the bank subtracts the loan amount from full cash and then estimates the
cash difference is greater than T to approve the loan amount. These steps are taken because if another person
applies for a loan or withdraws some amount from the bank, it helps the bank manage and operate all things
without any restriction in the functionality of the banking system.

Similarly, it works in an operating system. When a new process is created in a computer system, the process
must provide all types of information to the operating system like upcoming processes, requests for their
resources, counting them, and delays. Based on these criteria, the operating system decides which process
sequence should be executed or waited so that no deadlock occurs in a system. Therefore, it is also known
as deadlock avoidance algorithm or deadlock detection in the operating system.

Advantages

1. It contains various resources that meet the requirements of each process.

2. Each process should provide information to the operating system for upcoming resource requests, the
number of resources, and how long the resources will be held.

3. It helps the operating system manage and control process requests for each type of resource in the
computer system.

4. The algorithm has a Max resource attribute that represents indicates each process can hold the maximum
number of resources in a system.

Disadvantages

1. It requires a fixed number of processes, and no additional processes can be started in the system
while executing the process.
2. The algorithm does no longer allows the processes to exchange its maximum needs while
processing its tasks.
3. Each process has to know and state their maximum resource requirement in advance for the
system.
4. The number of resource requests can be granted in a finite time, but the time limit for allocating
the resources is one year.

When working with a banker's algorithm, it requests to know about three things:

1. How much each process can request for each resource in the system. It is denoted by the [MAX] request.

2. How much each process is currently holding each resource in a system. It is denoted by the
[ALLOCATED] resource.

3. It represents the number of each resource currently available in the system. It is denoted by the
[AVAILABLE] resource.

Following are the important data structures terms applied in the banker's algorithm as follows:

Suppose n is the number of processes, and m is the number of each type of resource used in a computer system.

1. Available: It is an array of length 'm' that defines each type of resource available in the system. When
Available[j] = K, means that 'K' instances of Resources type R[j] are available in the system.

2. Max: It is a [n x m] matrix that indicates each process P[i] can store the maximum number of resources
R[j] (each type) in a system.

3. Allocation: It is a matrix of m x n orders that indicates the type of resources currently allocated to each
process in the system. When Allocation [i, j] = K, it means that process P[i] is currently allocated K
instances of Resources type R[j] in the system.

4. Need: It is an M x N matrix sequence representing the number of remaining resources for each process.
When the Need[i] [j] = k, then process P[i] may require K more instances of resources type Rj to
complete the assigned work.
Nedd[i][j] = Max[i][j] - Allocation[i][j].

5. Finish: It is the vector of the order m. It includes a Boolean value (true/false) indicating whether the
process has been allocated to the requested resources, and all resources have been released after finishing
its task.

The Banker's Algorithm is the combination of the safety algorithm and the resource request algorithm to
control the processes and avoid deadlock in a system:

Recovery from Deadlock

In today’s world of computer systems and multitasking environments, deadlock is an undesirable situation that
can bring operations to a grinding halt. When multiple processes compete for exclusive access to resources and
end up in a circular waiting pattern, a deadlock occurs. To maintain the smooth functioning of an operating
system, it is crucial to implement recovery mechanisms that can break these deadlocks and restore the system’s
productivity.
“Recovery from Deadlock in Operating Systems” refers to the set of techniques and algorithms designed to
detect, resolve, or mitigate deadlock situations. These methods ensure that the system can continue processing
tasks efficiently without being trapped in an eternal standstill. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key
strategies employed.
There is no mechanism implemented by the OS to avoid or prevent deadlocks. The system, therefore, assumes
that a deadlock will undoubtedly occur. The OS periodically checks the system for any deadlocks in an effort to
break them. The OS will use various recovery techniques to restore the system if it encounters any deadlocks.
When a Deadlock Detection Algorithm determines that a deadlock has occurred in the system, the system
must recover from that deadlock.
Approaches to Breaking a Deadlock
Process Termination
To eliminate the deadlock, we can simply kill one or more processes. For this, we use two methods:
1. Abort all the Deadlocked Processes: Aborting all the processes will certainly break the deadlock but at a
great expense. The deadlocked processes may have been computed for a long time, and the result of those
partial computations must be discarded and there is a probability of recalculating them later.

2. Abort one process at a time until the deadlock is eliminated: Abort one deadlocked process at a time,
until the deadlock cycle is eliminated from the system. Due to this method, there may be considerable
overhead, because, after aborting each process, we have to run a deadlock detection algorithm to check
whether any processes are still deadlocked.
Advantages of Process Termination
 It is a simple method for breaking a deadlock.
 It ensures that the deadlock will be resolved quickly, as all processes involved in the deadlock are terminated
simultaneously.
 It frees up resources that were being used by the deadlocked processes, making those resources available
for other processes.
Disadvantages of Process Termination
 It can result in the loss of data and other resources that were being used by the terminated processes.
 It may cause further problems in the system if the terminated processes were critical to the system’s
operation.
 It may result in a waste of resources, as the terminated processes may have already completed a significant
amount of work before being terminated.
For Process
1. Destroy a process: Although killing a process can solve our problem, choosing which process to kill is more
important. The operating system typically terminates a process after it has completed the least amount of
work.
2. End all processes: Although not suggestible, this strategy can be used if the issue worsens significantly.
Because each process will have to start from scratch after being killed, the system will become inefficient.
Resource Preemption
To eliminate deadlocks using resource preemption, we preempt some resources from processes and give those
resources to other processes. This method will raise three issues –
1. Selecting a victim: We must determine which resources and which processes are to be preempted and also in
order to minimize the cost.

2. Rollback: We must determine what should be done with the process from which resources are preempted.
One simple idea is total rollback. That means aborting the process and restarting it.

3. Starvation: In a system, it may happen that the same process is always picked as a victim. As a result, that
process will never complete its designated task. This situation is called Starvation and must be avoided. One
solution is that a process must be picked as a victim only a finite number of times.
Advantages of Resource Preemption
1. It can help in breaking a deadlock without terminating any processes, thus preserving data and resources.
2. It is more efficient than process termination as it targets only the resources that are causing the deadlock.
3. It can potentially avoid the need for restarting the system.
Disadvantages of Resource Preemption
1. It may lead to increased overhead due to the need for determining which resources and processes should be
preempted.
2. It may cause further problems if the preempted resources were critical to the system’s operation.
3. It may cause delays in the completion of processes if resources are frequently preempted.

Resource Allocation Graph (RAG)


The resource allocation graph (RAG) is a popular technique for computer system deadlock detection. The
RAG is a visual representation of the processes holding the resources and their current state of allocation. The
resources and processes are represented by the graph’s nodes, while their allocation relationships are shown by
the graph’s edges. A cycle in the graph of the RAG method denotes the presence of a deadlock. When a cycle is
discovered, at least one resource needed by another process in the cycle is being held by each process in the
cycle, causing a deadlock. The RAG method is a crucial tool in contemporary operating systems due to its high
efficiency and ability to spot deadlocks quickly.

Priority Inversion
A technique for breaking deadlocks in real-time systems is called priority inversion. This approach alters the
order of the processes to prevent stalemates. A higher priority is given to the process that already has the needed
resources, and a lower priority is given to the process that is still awaiting them. The inversion of priorities that
can result from this approach can impair system performance and cause performance issues. Additionally,
because higher-priority processes may continue to take precedence over lower-priority processes, this approach
may starve lower-priority processes of resources.
RollBack
In database systems, rolling back is a common technique for breaking deadlocks. When using this technique, the
system reverses the transactions of the involved processes to a time before the deadlock. The system must keep a
log of all transactions and the system’s condition at various points in time in order to use this method. The
transactions can then be rolled back to the initial state and executed again by the system. This approach may
result in significant delays in the transactions’ execution and data loss.

Multiple-Processor Scheduling
In multiple-processor scheduling multiple CPU’s are available and hence Load Sharing becomes possible.
However multiple processor scheduling is more complex as compared to single processor scheduling. In multiple
processor scheduling there are cases when the processors are identical i.e. HOMOGENEOUS, in terms of their
functionality, we can use any processor available to run any process in the queue. Multiple-processor scheduling
is important because it enables a computer system to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, which can greatly
improve overall system performance and efficiency. Multiple-processor scheduling works by dividing tasks
among multiple processors in a computer system, which allows tasks to be processed simultaneously and reduces
the overall time needed to complete them.

Approaches to Multiple-Processor Scheduling –

One approach is when all the scheduling decisions and I/O processing are handled by a single processor which is
called the Master Server and the other processors executes only the user code. This is simple and reduces the
need of data sharing. This entire scenario is called Asymmetric Multiprocessing. A second approach
uses Symmetric Multiprocessing where each processor is self scheduling. All processes may be in a common
ready queue or each processor may have its own private queue for ready processes. The scheduling proceeds
further by having the scheduler for each processor examine the ready queue and select a process to execute.

Processor Affinity

Processor Affinity means a processes has an affinity for the processor on which it is currently running. When a
process runs on a specific processor there are certain effects on the cache memory. The data most recently
accessed by the process populate the cache for the processor and as a result successive memory access by the
process are often satisfied in the cache memory. Now if the process migrates to another processor, the contents of
the cache memory must be invalidated for the first processor and the cache for the second processor must be
repopulated. Because of the high cost of invalidating and repopulating caches, most of the SMP(symmetric
multiprocessing) systems try to avoid migration of processes from one processor to another and try to keep a
process running on the same processor. This is known as PROCESSOR AFFINITY. There are two types of
processor affinity:
1. Soft Affinity – When an operating system has a policy of attempting to keep a process running on the same
processor but not guaranteeing it will do so, this situation is called soft affinity.
2. Hard Affinity – Hard Affinity allows a process to specify a subset of processors on which it may run. Some
systems such as Linux implements soft affinity but also provide some system calls
like sched_setaffinity() that supports hard affinity.

Load Balancing

Load Balancing is the phenomena which keeps the workload evenly distributed across all processors in an
SMP system. Load balancing is necessary only on systems where each processor has its own private queue of
process which are eligible to execute. Load balancing is unnecessary because once a processor becomes idle it
immediately extracts a runnable process from the common run queue. On SMP(symmetric multiprocessing), it is
important to keep the workload balanced among all processors to fully utilize the benefits of having more than
one processor else one or more processor will sit idle while other processors have high workloads along with lists
of processors awaiting the CPU. There are two general approaches to load balancing :
1. Push Migration – In push migration a task routinely checks the load on each processor and if it finds an
imbalance then it evenly distributes load on each processors by moving the processes from overloaded to idle
or less busy processors.
2. Pull Migration – Pull Migration occurs when an idle processor pulls a waiting task from a busy processor
for its execution.

Multicore Processors –

In multicore processors multiple processor cores are places on the same physical chip. Each core has a register
set to maintain its architectural state and thus appears to the operating system as a separate physical
processor. SMP systems that use multicore processors are faster and consume less power than systems in which
each processor has its own physical chip. However multicore processors may complicate the scheduling
problems. When processor accesses memory then it spends a significant amount of time waiting for the data to
become available. This situation is called MEMORY STALL. It occurs for various reasons such as cache miss,
which is accessing the data that is not in the cache memory. In such cases the processor can spend upto fifty
percent of its time waiting for data to become available from the memory. To solve this problem recent hardware
designs have implemented multithreaded processor cores in which two or more hardware threads are assigned to
each core. Therefore if one thread stalls while waiting for the memory, core can switch to another thread. There
are two ways to multithread a processor :
1. Coarse-Grained Multithreading – In coarse grained multithreading a thread executes on a processor until a
long latency event such as a memory stall occurs, because of the delay caused by the long latency event, the
processor must switch to another thread to begin execution. The cost of switching between threads is high as
the instruction pipeline must be terminated before the other thread can begin execution on the processor core.
Once this new thread begins execution it begins filling the pipeline with its instructions.
2. Fine-Grained Multithreading – This multithreading switches between threads at a much finer level mainly
at the boundary of an instruction cycle. The architectural design of fine grained systems include logic for
thread switching and as a result the cost of switching between threads is small.

Virtualization and Threading

In this type of multiple-processor scheduling even a single CPU system acts like a multiple-processor system. In
a system with Virtualization, the virtualization presents one or more virtual CPU to each of virtual machines
running on the system and then schedules the use of physical CPU among the virtual machines. Most virtualized
environments have one host operating system and many guest operating systems. The host operating system
creates and manages the virtual machines. Each virtual machine has a guest operating system installed and
applications run within that guest.Each guest operating system may be assigned for specific use cases,applications
or users including time sharing or even real-time operation. Any guest operating-system scheduling algorithm
that assumes a certain amount of progress in a given amount of time will be negatively impacted by the
virtualization. A time sharing operating system tries to allot 100 milliseconds to each time slice to give users a
reasonable response time. A given 100 millisecond time slice may take much more than 100 milliseconds of
virtual CPU time. Depending on how busy the system is, the time slice may take a second or more which results
in a very poor response time for users logged into that virtual machine. The net effect of such scheduling layering
is that individual virtualized operating systems receive only a portion of the available CPU cycles, even though
they believe they are receiving all cycles and that they are scheduling all of those cycles. Commonly, the time-of-
day clocks in virtual machines are incorrect because timers take no longer to trigger than they would on dedicated
CPU’s. Virtualizations can thus undo the good scheduling-algorithm efforts of the operating systems within
virtual machines.

Real Time Scheduling

Real-time systems are systems that carry real-time tasks. These tasks need to be performed immediately with a
certain degree of urgency. In particular, these tasks are related to control of certain events (or) reacting to them.
Real-time tasks can be classified as hard real-time tasks and soft real-time tasks.
A hard real-time task must be performed at a specified time which could otherwise lead to huge losses. In soft
real-time tasks, a specified deadline can be missed. This is because the task can be rescheduled (or) can be
completed after the specified time,
In real-time systems, the scheduler is considered as the most important component which is typically a short-term
task scheduler. The main focus of this scheduler is to reduce the response time associated with each of the
associated processes instead of handling the deadline.
If a preemptive scheduler is used, the real-time task needs to wait until its corresponding tasks time slice
completes. In the case of a non-preemptive scheduler, even if the highest priority is allocated to the task, it needs
to wait until the completion of the current task. This task can be slow (or) of the lower priority and can lead to a
longer wait.
A better approach is designed by combining both preemptive and non-preemptive scheduling. This can be done
by introducing time-based interrupts in priority based systems which means the currently running process is
interrupted on a time-based interval and if a higher priority process is present in a ready queue, it is executed by
