Pneumatic Circuit Implementation Guide

The lab manual outlines two experiments focused on implementing pneumatic circuits for actuating single and double acting cylinders. Experiment 1 involves connecting pneumatic valves to cylinders and observing their behavior under pressure, while Experiment 2 focuses on sequential control using proximity sensors and timers. Both experiments emphasize safety precautions regarding pressure management and equipment handling.

Actuating Systems Lab Manual

Experiment 1
Objective:
To implement Pneumatic Circuits to Actuate Single and Double Acting Cylinders.

Apparatus required:
 Pneumatic Lab Trainer

Procedure:
1. Close all the ports using stoppers, and adjust the pneumatic pressure to 6 bar (600K
Pascal) using pressure regulating valve.
2. Connect a 3/2 pneumatic valve (Pneumax, 104.32.6.22/3R) with a single acting
cylinder (Pneumax, 1291.20.50), and a 5/2 pneumatic valve (Pneumax,
104.52.6.22/2P) with a double acting cylinder (Pneumax, 1280.20.100.M) as shown in
the Figure 1.1.
3. Press the Push-buttons and note down the behavior of the both cylinders.

Experiment Worksheet: No need to answer these questions. Just Skip this

Consider the data sheet of valves/cylinders and note down the following;

1. For each valve, maximum and working pressure in Pascal, and flow rate in Nl/min.

2. For each cylinder, Stroke length and Bore Diameter in mm.

Precautions:
 Do not leave the apparatus un-attended especially when the compressor is ON.

 Keep an Eye on the Pressure while Compressor is ON, and Immediately Stop the
Compressor Motor if Pressure starts to rise above safe level.

 Fill the Compressor tank first, and the Turn OFF Compressor before working in the
Apparatus.

 Be Careful of Pressure Leakages is the air pipes.

Experiment 2
Objective:
To implement Pneumatic Circuit for Sequential Control of a Single and Double Acting
Cylinders.

Apparatus required:
 Pneumatic Lab Trainer

Procedure: Draw Pneumatic circuit on your own for the sequence.

1. Close all the ports using stoppers, and adjust the pneumatic pressure to 6 bar (600K
Pascal) using pressure regulating valve.
2. Connect a 3/2 pneumatic valve (Start Button) (Pneumax, 104.32.6.22/3R) with a
single acting cylinder A.
3. The cylinder A is equipped with two proximity valves, 1) a- is a 3/2 normally closed
(NC) valve (Pneumax, 104.32.3.1.LC), 2) a+ is a 3/2 NC valve (Pneumax,
104.32.0.1.NC). Connect the output of a+ and a- with the input of cylinder B, as
shown in Figure 2.1.
4. Similar to cylinder A, the cylinder B is also equipped with two proximity sensors (b-
and b+). Connect the output of b+ with a pneumatic NOT valve (Metal Work
Pneumatic.W3604000003). Connect the output of NOT valve with the input of Start
Button as shown in Figure 2.1.
5. Press the Start Button and note down the behavior of both cylinders.

Experiment Worksheet: No need to answer

these questions.

1. Write down the actuation sequence of the cylinders.

2. Pneumatic timers can be used to create delays in the sequence. Study the time valve
(metal Work Pneumatic, W3604000006) and redraw the above circuit by
implementing the timer in the circuit.
3. What is the minimum pressure to change the pneumatic NOT logic?
4. What is the maximum pressure which this circuit can handle? Justify your answer.
