THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL COMPARISON

OF THE AXIAL HYDRAULIC TURBINES ON

FUNCTIONING WITH CAVITATION AT IRON GATES I

Introduction. To optimize the operation of hydraulic axial turbine at the Iron Gates I, it must be
eliminated differences between operating parameters and cavitation calculated using data from the
model or diagram of operation to those measured during the turbine operation.
If the geometric suction head of the turbine H S exceeds a certain value, creating a severe
depression outlet of the turbine runner, such areas appear filled with vapor and the turbine is operating
with cavitation. The phenomenon of flow through the turbines is complex, the relations from the
literature doesn’t express so accurately and completely, thus we rely on the model study.
In the operating point of the monitoring moment there are asumed from process monitoring
measured parameters: the active and reactive power, upstream water levels (after trash rake) and at the
outlet of the turbine draft tube (there are results the static component of the "measured" head of the
turbine), the difference of the upstream and downstream level from the trash rake, wicket gate and rotor
servomotor strokes , the differential pressure in the spiral chamber and the hydrounit speed.
The universal feature or the characteristic of turbine model, there are results from stand tests, the
corresponding point of the turbine industrial operating point defined by the wicket gate and runner " m"
and "m" opening angle and results the model parameters. Lagrange interpolation is used to determine
the related model parameters. Operating parameters and calculate cavitation of industrial turbine are
obtained using hydraulic simillitude formulas from the major literature related to model parameters
which were previously obtained from the measured parameters in the industrial turbine exploitation.
The data results from the index tests and those recorded in the axial turbine operation show that
there are good cavitation conditions.
Analyzing the operating and the cavitation parameters "calculated", we conclude that hydraulic
axial turbine works with cavitation eve at the smaller suction heads.
The solution proposed is a method of determining the parameters of cavitation by reducing the
error caused by the similitude phenomenon and accurate estimation of the turbine operating
parameters according to the universal diagram of the turbine.
