Topic: Automated Carbon – Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box Fan
and Electric Shocker
SUMMARY:
Dengue is a significant tropical disease in the Philippines, and the
Department of Health is implementing environmental control measures to
reduce Aedes. However, stakeholders are not able to prevent and eliminate local
breeding sites. In spite of this, there is still a gap in prevention and programs in
Bohol that the dengue cases in Bohol is increasing. To ensure individual health,
measures integrating science and technology are needed to address these gaps.
Background and Problem
Dengue is definitely the most well-known and anticipated tropical disease
in the Philippines. Dengue fever, a case study by Gargar (2019), leads to dengue
hemorrhagic fever, characterized by weak pulse, petechial, sensitive stomach,
internal bleeding, black stools, or vomit. If dengue if left untreated, hemorrhagic
fever might develop into dengue shock syndrome, the most severe type of
dengue that can be deadly. In its efforts. The Department of Health is
implementing environmental control measures like emptying water containers
and chemical control measures to reduce Aedes, but has struggled to achieve its
dengue reduction objectives due to stakeholders' inability to take responsibility
for prevention and the elimination of local breeding sites. (Ong, et al., 2022).
Finally, dispersed waste that can gather rainfall might be caused by inefficient
garbage collection services. In the past year, during the 5th Morbidity Week,
which ran from January 29 to February 4, 2023, Bohol documented 199 dengue
cases (The Bohol Times, 2025)
In place with this, it is identified that amidst of prevention and program on
dengue cases in Bohol, there is still a gap that is necessary to be addressed.
Measure integrated with the use of Science and Technology about be taken to
ensure the health of individuals in Bohol or even in our country over the next
three to five years.
Carbon – Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box Fan and Electric
Shocker is a concept that aims to address the problem of lack of efficient ways to
prevent cases of dengue by utilizing the technology of methods to hinder the
dissemination of dengue cases. As this concept focuses on expanding the better
ways, the province can continue to thrive towards a better environment and
good health for the upcoming years.
PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM
According to Bohol document during the 5th Morbidity Week, which ran
from January 29 to February 4, 2023, 199 dengue cases and the organization is
facing challenges in achieving its dengue reduction goals due to stakeholders'
inability to take responsibility for prevention and eliminating local breeding sites.
With these in mind, “Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) Baited Traps with Battery Powered
Box Fan and Electric Shocker” is a concept that aims to reduce dengue cases,
mosquito population and other diseases carried by mosquitoes. The Carbon
Dioxide (CO2) Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box Fan and Electric Shocker
utilizes the technology and innovative of the pre-existing technology of this era
which has lots of different uses and is very helpful for developing products. In,
addition Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box Fan and
Electric Shocker is very safe, easy, efficient, sustainable to use as it is battery
powered and is simple, it has a lifespan of over 3-5 years as it can be manually
maintained and only requires to change or charge the batteries. It is 95%
effective as it is cheap and affordable, and is very helpful to avoid and reduce
dengue and other diseases carried or transported by mosquitoes. In summary,
through the innovation Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) Baited Traps with Battery Powered
Box Fan and Electric Shocker, individuals are given the chance to address the
problem of dengue, other diseases that is carried by mosquitoes and decrease
mosquito population.
BENEFICIARIES
The Carbon-Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box fan and Electric
Shocker may be beneficial to the following;
GOVERNMENT OF BOHOL. By the Carbon-Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery
Powered Box fan and Electric Shocker to pest strategies it can enhance
agricultural productivity and maintaining the health sufficiency of the province.
NATIONAL GOVERNMENT. The Carbon-Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery
Powered Box fan and Electric Shocker can benefit to improve community health
and protects local biodiversity.
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. This Carbon-Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery
Powered Box fan and Electric Shocker can contribute by this to raise the health
awareness and preventive health measures. Reduced pest populations lead to
fewer health risks associated pests, such as allergies and diseases.
PHILIPPINE RED CROSS. It can be an effective tool for enhancing disease
prevention, engaging communities, and improving overall public health
strategies. By incorporating these traps into their initiatives, the organization can
contribute to healthier, more informed communities.
PHILIPPINE HEALTH INSURANCE CORPORATION (PHILHEALTH). It can
serve as a valuable tool for reducing healthcare costs, fewer disease cases can
lead to lower health insurance claims, benefiting PhilHealth’s financial
sustainability.
BOHOLANOS. The Carbon-Dioxide Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box fan
and Electric Shocker can foster a healthier and more prosperous community, and
numerous benefits including improved health outcomes, economic gains,
community engagement and environmental sustainability.
METHODS
First, submit the proposed solution to the Department of Health
(DOH) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to
have the approval of the proposed prototype “Carbon Dioxide
Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box Fan and Electric Shocker”.
Second, after the approval of the proposed prototype, prepare the
materials and components needed for a test run of the prototype
such as electric shockers and an area with lots of mosquitoes.
Third, to test to prototype’s effectiveness find an area with a lot of
mosquitoes and test the product’s effectiveness and efficiency.
Fourth, have pilot-testing for the prototype to ensure safety,
efficiency, sustainability and effectiveness.
Fifth, after the analytic testing and proving the efficiency and
sustainability of the prototype, with the help of the Department of
Health (DOH), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and
the Local Government Units (LGU) of each respective municipalities
of the province of Bohol, implement the Carbon Dioxide (CO 2)
Baited Traps with Battery Powered Box Fan and Electric Shocker to
reduce mosquito population, reduce the cases of Dengue Fevers
and its casualties.
METHODS ON HOW DOES THE PROTOTYPE WORK
First, deploy or assemble the prototype on a mosquito packed area and
activate the fan and the battery powered electric shocker.
Second, upon deployed and activation, mosquitos’ sense where CO2 is
being expelled by a living creature. Since dry ice evaporates into CO2 gas,
it tricks the mosquito into thinking there is someone to bite.
Third, drawing them into the trap which uses a fan to suck them into
netting and trapping them inside. The fan has sensors that can detect
incoming mosquitoes thus turning it on automatically, thus sucking the
mosquitoes in.
Fourth, the tapped mosquitoes will be electrified to death by the battery
powered electric shocker inside the netting or the space they are trapped
into assuring death and demise of the mosquitoes.
