One Possible Version(仅供阅读参考)
Currently, contrary to what people did in the past, many parents think highly of their kids too
often. It is not proper to praise children too much, but they can't do the opposite. What matters is
not the quantity but the quality of praise. Parents should praise their children in promotion to how
much effort they make.

Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end
of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the
questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read
the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question
you have heard.
1. M: The red looks much better on you than the striped one.
W: But the colour of the red is too dark and the sleeves are too long.
Q: Where does this conversation most probably take place?
2 M: Don’t you have to meet your sister at the train station tonight?
W: Oh, I almost forgot! I’d better hurry!
Q: What will the woman probably do next?
3. W: What should I have, the pork or the chicken?
M: Why not get the mixed vegetables instead?
Q: What does the man suggest?
4. W: You didn’t seem to be happy with the result of the exam.
M: I didn’t fail. But I also didn’t pass by much.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?
5. W: What a fantastic car you have! It must be very expensive.
M: Almost everyone thinks it costs a fortune. Actually, I bought it on sale.
Q: What does the man imply about the car?
6. W: Matthew wants to know if he can get a ride with us to the party.
M: That’s odd. This morning he said he’d be driving there himself.
Q: What does the man mean?
7. M: Have you come up with a guest speaker for the banquet?
W: Not so far, but I’m working on it.
Q: What does the woman mean?
8. M: Could you tell me what the teacher did in the first class? I missed it because I was late.

W: He outlined the class requirements.
Q: What did the teacher do in the first class?
9. W: I have to turn in my research paper later than the expected time. I don’t hope our teacher
would be unhappy.
M: Well, this is the first time you have ever asked to have an extension so I don’t expect he
would be too hard on you.
Q: What does the man think the teacher would probably do?
10. M: Did you happen to be at Jane’s presentation last night?
W: How she could be so calm in front of such a large audience is beyond me.
Q: What does the woman imply?
Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you
will be asked several questions on each of the passages and the conversation. The passages and
the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a
question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best
answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Today’s discussion is about a common animal reaction—the yawn. The dictionary defines a
yawn as “an involuntary reaction to fatigue or boredom.” That’s certainly true for human yawns,
but not necessarily for animal yawns. The action can have quite different meanings in different
species.
For example, some animals yawn to threaten intruders on their territory. Fish and lizards are
examples of this. Hippos use yawns when they want to settle a quarrel. Observers have seen two
hippos yawn at each other for as long as two hours before they stop quarreling.
As for social animals like lions, they yawn to establish the power structure within social
groups and calm social tensions. Sometimes animals yawn for a strictly physiological reason, that
is, to increase oxygen levels. And curiously enough, when they yawn for a physical reason like
that, they do what humans do, they try to stop the yawn by looking away or by covering their
mouths.
(Listen again, please)
Questions:
11. What is the speech mainly about?
12. According to the speaker, when are hippos likely to yawn?
13. What physiological reason for yawning is mentioned?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in
every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned.
Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do
not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose
your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to stop at a

certain point, no one will be any wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just
continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you
have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech---“I have a Dream”, you may notice
that he makes mistakes and stops his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you
don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his
way of speech-making.
People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a
kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges
in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer.
They are looking for a well-thought speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.
Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more
human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being imperfect. Once you free your mind of
this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
(Listen again, please)
14. What should a speaker do when he makes a mistake during his speech?
15. Why does the speaker mention Martin Luther King’s speech?
16. What does the speaker mainly tell us?
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
W: Hi. How can I help you?
M: Yes, I’d like to return this sweater for a refund. I bought a week ago.
W: Well, first of all, what seems to be the problem?
M: Well, isn’t it obvious by just looking at it? The first time I washed and dried it, it became
shorter at least five sizes. It wouldn’t even fit a baby.
W: Uh, I see what you mean, but did you follow the washing instructions? I think it says here . . .
yeah . . . right here on the label to hand wash it and then to dry it on low heat.
M: How was I supposed to know that? The label is written in Japanese! And something else: The
color faded from a nice dark blue to a seaweed green.
W: Listen, sir. We take a lot of pride in our clothing. What I can do is allow you to exchange the
sweater for another one.
M: I don’t want to exchange it for anything! I just want my money back!
W: Well, I can give you credit on your next purchase, and since the item you purchased was on
special sale, we can’t give you a refund.
M: A special sale item! There wasn’t anything on the price tag that said anything about that.
W: I guess you didn’t read the fine print in our ad. Look. Here's the ad, and the information about
the special sale is right here at the bottom on the back page.
M: The print is so small. How can people notice it? This is ridiculous.
W: And anyway, you can only return items with a receipt within six days, and unfortunately, that
was yesterday in your case.
M: But, your store was closed yesterday because of the national holiday. Listen. I give up. Your
store policies are completely unreasonable, the quality of your merchandise is poor, and your
service, well, is non-existent. And how do you expect people to shop here?

W: You did . . . Ha, ha . . .
M: Here. Take your sweater. You should open up a pet store and sell it as a dog sweater.
(Listen again, please)
Questions
17. What is the problem with the sweater?
18. What did the woman say she would do?
19. Why couldn’t the woman accept the sweater back?
