Executive Summary
This project talks about how various parameters are considered and
analysed by sports analysts to know the reason behind what cost
them in losing or winning a match of cricket. There are various
factors which we will be talking about in this project report are
Stadiums, Pitches, Weather and Players. We can see ahead in the
project report that these factors play a huge role in the result of the
game. Pitches in countries like Australia and New Zealand have
bouncy and fast pitches. In countries like England weather plays a
huge role in swinging the deliveries, if the weather is dusky whereas
in sunny conditions the pitches in countries like England favour
batting. But the weather in England changes continuously
throughout the day. In South Africa the pitches are uneven in nature
or we can say the pitches over there have a spongy bounce which
favours bowlers more. In India pitches are of various types, but due
to dry and humid weather throughout the year, the pitches favour
spinners. Some pitches in India are good for batsmen also for
example Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai has two types of pitches
which are made both of red soil and black soil which usually
favours batsmen. Some places in India have hot and humid weather,
for example in Chepauk, Chennai playing is very tough when it
comes to test cricket. Players are supposed to play through 5 days
and perform physical activities which lead to cramps.
Therefore all in all this project report includes the data from
stadiums dimension, types of pitches, weather conditions and stats
of last 5 years performance of 11 star players.

Research Methodology
8
The data collected has some drawbacks, because it's a dynamic
game in which anything can happen. There can be a new player who
will perform or the player which we have taken into account are
only players who are considered as stars. Some players have retired
and some of them are not in form. The data is still taken to show the
impact of a particular player, how it can affect the result of a match.
Different conditions which take place in a particular match meaning
when a team is playing aggressive and due to collapse of wicket,
how the team is reacting. This data collected and represented is only
for the analysts to analyse, what should be the team plan to win the
match?
The data contains no duplicates and some data types which are
wrong have been corrected and are represented in a tabular format.
There are no null values and where there is no data I have used
hyphens which can be converted to 0 to go ahead for designing an
algorithm for machine learning and artificial intelligence related
issues.

Analysis of Stadium Data
As we can see from the above data that different countries are
having different dimensions of their own cricket stadiums. These
dimensions play a huge role in deciding a cricket match's results.
Whenever the batsman is playing he aims for the shorter boundaries
whereas bowlers try to force the batsman to hit towards the longer
boundaries. If the batsman tries to play against the line, the risk of
him getting out increases. That's why in limited overs when bowlers
are bowling in powerplay or death overs they ball slower deliveries
and bowl towards the longer side (offside/legside) depending on the
ground dimensions. That is how various grounds with various
dimensions have a significant impact on the result of the match.
There are various types of pitches which impact the result of the
match. Pitches are classified on the basis of height of grass, amount
of grass and the type of soil with which the pitches are made.
26
bowled on such pitches there will be formation of more cracks on
the pitch.
An ideal pitch is always a pitch which is freshly prepared and has
equal amounts of grass and is wet enough to not fall under dry pitch.
27
batsmans as the bowl gets wetter everytime bowlers bowl on such
pitches. Wet bowl is tough for bowlers to get proper grip and for
spinners it's a huge disadvantage leading to not much spin but the
bowl will skit.
Dead Pitch is even drier than the dry pitch as it has no amount of
grass on it and we can see bowlers footmarks which are like dark
spots on the pitch as shown in above image. These footmarks help
the spinner to get a huge turn on the bowl and completely change
the game by their bowling.
28
Impact of Weather on the result of Cricket Match
Dry
If the weather is dry then this will favour the spin bowlers but as the
weather is dry and hot it will impact the performance of players as
the weather is dry. But usually dry weather doesn't impact the result
when we consider the impact on performance of players who do not
get dehydrated quickly. Dry weather helps the spinners as it makes
wide cracks to open up on the pitch easily.
Humid
If the weather is very humid this will have a huge impact on the
fitness of the players as they will get dehydrated very quickly
leading to cramps and impacting the player to continue to play the
match in pain or completely take rest skipping that match. Therefore
humid weather can impact the result of a match as there will be only
10 batsmen which will be available for playing and if that player is a
key player and in form, it will impact the morale of the game
thereby impacting the result of the match.
29
more. That's why in test cricket always morning sessions and in day
night tests the session post dinner is considered as the most
dangerous sessions of test cricket and batsmen are advised to watch
the ball properly and survive this session. The other sessions
become easy for the batsman as the bowl will get 25-30 overs old
and the weather will be sunny. Making it easier for batsmen.
Rainy
Rainy weather is the most disturbing weather in a game. As it makes
batting easy and there is not much for spinners in it. Initially 30
minutes after rain it favours fast bowlers but as the bowl gets older
and pitch gets drier the batting becomes very easy. That's why in
rainy weather , the game becomes a high scoring match. But
sometimes due to frequent rains the batsman does not get time to
understand the pitch and there is lapse of concentration leading to a
batting collapse. One famous example of this can be Gabba Test
2024 Border Gavaskar Trophy played between India and Australia.
Players Performance
30
the players will be considered in all these countries and will be
compared. For sharing the data, I will be taking snapshots from my
excel sheet. The excel sheet will be shared in this report itself in the
form of a pdf.
List of Batsmen
List of Bowlers
31
Let's now take one player at a time and then draw our insights by
reading the data. Depending upon the data the form of the current
player will be studied and we will understand the average values of
each parameter and where the following players do well.
Virat Kohli
Test
Odi
32
T20
33
SENA countries his average is around 50 except in England where
his average dropped to 27. He has scored 5 centuries while playing
in India but he has not scored a century in SENA countries. He was
at the peak of his form in 2023 with his ODI batting average of 72
scoring 6 centuries that year.
Virat Kohli, like in ODI, has maintained his form in the T20 format
of the game. Virat Kohli has maintained the average of 43. He has
scored 1 century against afghanistan. But his average looks
impressive in SENA countries but his average comes down to 26
while playing in New Zealand but his average reaches 71 while
playing in Australia which is more than his average of 46 while
playing in india. Virat Kohli has retired from the T20 format of the
game.
The star player Virat Kohli has proved his mettle in limited overs
cricket but is yet to regain his form in test cricket as well.
Considering his age he must be rested in tests if he underperforms. 5
years is a long period and so many chances have been given to him.
As you can see from the data virat kohli was given 38 matches and
his average remains around 30 which is below par in test cricket.
Though there is no doubt he is a great generational player who has
transformed the Indian cricket team with his captaincy.
34
Rohit Sharma
Test
ODI
35
T20
Rohit Sharma has been below average in test cricket. His overall
average in the last 5 years is just 36. But his average is around 44 in
england which is very good considering him a opener facing new
ball and weather conditions in england with a new duke ball
maintaining average of 44 is a huge impact factor. In ODI, Rohit
Sharma has maintained his average of 49 which is really great in the
context of the game. His average in both home and away is really
great 47 and 56 respectively. If we observe there are very few
players who have more average in away games than at home and
Rohit Sharma is one among them. He was at his peak in the year
2023, scoring with an average of 72 and most of the ODI, he played
as part of ICC World Cup 2023. In T20 cricket, Rohit Sharma has
maintained his average of 32 which is a good figure seeing the t20
format of cricket. He has maintained almost the same average in
both home and away of 31.
36
Steven Smith
Test
ODI
37
T20
Steven Smith is one of the FAB4 terms used for players who have
made a huge impact and have been consistent in all three formats.
Steven Smith has maintained an average of 44 in tests. One of the
best things about Steven Smith is his stance and ability to play spin,
this can be shown through data also in India he has maintained an
average of 29 which is below par but if we see his data in rest of
asia the average touches 47. He has an average of 57 in South
Africa, where the grounds are famous for pace and uneven bouncy
pitches.
Steven Smith in ODIs has just been phenomenal, maintaining an
average of 48. In the test his average was 44, he is a multiformat
player just like rohit and kohli nowadays there are not many players
who play all the three formats smith is one of them. His form was
dropped in 2023 from 60 to around 30s but in 2024 he took his
average above 40.
38
Steven Smith in T20 is completely a flop. Anyways he never had a
reputation of being destructive in the T20 format of the game. The
data will only tell how bad the stats are actually looking.
Kane Williamson
Test
ODI
39
T20
40
but when compared with other sides his average in away T20 drops
down to 19.8 even below 20.
By seeing all format data of Kane Williamson we can say that he is
the best and no one can overtake him when he is playing in his
country. But when he is entering other countries the form is
dropping that too drastically which is a concern. His form in test
cricket has made New Zealand win the World Test Championship
with an important 50 coming up in the last innings and chasing in
pressure situations.
Quinton De Cock
Test
ODI
41
T20
42
Joe Root
Test
ODI
Joe Root is one of the FAB4 players who are brilliant in all formats
of the game. In tests he has maintained an average of 54 in the last 5
years. His average is down to 30 only in Australia but in other
43
SENA countries his average is above 40. He has an average of 67
playing in New Zealand whereas his average playing in England at
his home is 61 which is less than the average of 67 in New Zealand.
His average in ODI is only 28 in the last 5 years but his overall
average in ODI is 47. Though he has been poor in ODI and hasn't
played a shorter format of game. He did not have a huge impact but
his impact in test cricket makes him a very important player for
england.
Jasprit Bumrah
Test
44
ODI
T20
45
Jasprit Bumrah has emerged from being a good bowler to the best
bowler in the last 5 years.
In tests, He has taken 234 wickets in the last 5 years in just 32
matches. His economy is between 2-3 which is considered as a good
economy for a fast bowler in a test. He has taken 5 wicket hauls 8
times. In the recent Border Gavaskar trophy he was a nightmare for
Australian batters.
In ODIs also he is one of the best bowlers with a wicket taking skill
and has a very good skill of bowling in death overs. He has taken 46
wickets in 41 matches.Playing in Australia his economy is above 6
which can be considered not too good nor too bad either. The main
reason being teams are easily scoring 300 plus total in ODI cricket
nowadays easily.
In T20s he has taken 38 wickets in 28 matches. In T20s the
economy of the bowler plays a major role rather than his wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah’s ability to bowl yorkers makes him a deadly bowler
along with his slower deliveries. Which makes him a deadly death
over bowler and with a new bowl he can swing the bowl to trouble
the batsman. His economy playing against Australia is high around
10 but when he played against England his economy was 3 which is
phenomenal to achieve in T20s. His economy has remained below 8
except when he is playing in India.
Bumrah is an all format player which is quite rare nowadays to
achieve. He is one of those generational players and leads the Indian
pace attack.
46
Mitchell Starc
Test
ODI
47
T20
Mitchell Starc is one of the best bowlers which Australia has ever
produced. His yorkers are known to take wickets of legends. He is
the best left hand bowler who can swing the bowl both ways.
He has taken a total of 71 wickets in just 37 test matches he has
played in the last 5 years. He has taken 2 five wicket hauls and
always takes wicket at the crucial juncture of the game. He is also
known for taking early wickets in test cricket. Two famous
examples are the first ball wicket in the Ashes test series of rory
burns and getting yashasvi jaiswal in the first over of the game.
In ODIs, Starc has taken 72 in 42 matches with economy of lying
between 4-6 which is exceptional. Starc has the ability of
performing in the knockout phases of tournaments and especially in
world cups Starc is very lethal. He has taken 5-wicket haul 4 times
and 4-wicket haul 4 times.
In T20, Starc has taken 40 wickets in 37 matches. His economy is a
bit high, lying between 9-10 but his economy drops to 6 when he is
playing in england.
48
Starc is a legendary bowler in ODIs and Test cricket, we can also
verify this by seeing his stats above. In T20 cricket he has been
average but we can still say he is an all format bowler.
Tim Southee
Test
ODI
49
T20
Tim Southee has been the best New Zealand bowler. In tests he has
taken 121 wickets in 36 matches with the economy lying between
2.7-3 which is usually the case. In tests he has been good but when
it comes to limited overs he is phenomenal. In ODIs he has taken 20
wickets in 15 matches, which shows he has not played too many
ODIs in the past 5 years. One of the main reasons being is his
economy which lies between 6-7 which is pretty high. His economy
is below 5 only in Australia. But in T20s he is the bowler with the
most number of wickets. He has taken 94 wickets in 60 matches in
the last 5 years which is a phenomenal record. He has created the
most impact in T20 in the last 5 years but he is serving New Zealand
for a long time, taking 700+ wickets for his nation.
50
Kagiso Rabada
Test
ODI
51
T20
Kagiso Rabada is the best all format bowler for South Africa among
the currently playing players. He is also considered as one of the
best international bowlers.
In tests he has taken 131 wickets in just 28 matches which is an
amazing record along with 7 5-wicket hauls and with the economy
lying between 3-3.5. His record is phenomenal in the last 5 years, he
is the sole reason behind South Africa qualifying for the World Test
Championship 2025 finals. In ODIs he has taken 38 wickets in 23
matches with the economy lying between 5-5.3 which is
phenomenal. He has taken 1 5-wicket haul also.
In T20s he has taken 15 wickets in 19 matches with economy lying
between 8.5-9.5 which is slightly on the higher side but is still
considered good in the current era of T20 where the scores are
easily going above 200. He has not made a remarkable impact in
T20s . But in tests and ODIs his records are just phenomenal.
52
James Anderson
Test
James Anderson has taken retirement in July 2024, but he is the best
fast bowler of the world. Though he didn't play limited overs cricket
in the last 5 years because of workload and avoiding injuries. He has
served the England cricket team for 22 years, which is very tough
for a fast bowler. We have still included him in our data because he
has taken 704 test wickets only behind two great spinners Muthiah
Muralidharan and Shane Warne. He is the top wicket taker among
fast bowlers and overall third in the list.
In the last 5 years in tests he has taken 127 wickets in just 37
matches with the economy lying between 2.2 - 2.5 which is a
phenomenal record. He has taken 5 5-wicket hauls in the last 5
years. There were 3 instances where he took 7 wickets. He is a
53
legend and will be remembered forever in the books of cricket
history.
Findings and Discussion
54
bowl properly and the bowl skits instead of gripping on the pitch
and turning. Though such a situation will help fast bowlers to swing
the bowl due to cloudy and windy weather.
Along with factors which cannot be changed there is a player factor
also. If the star player comes and plays a big knock for his team as a
batsman or bowls a beautiful spell taking key wickets can change
the result of the match within a span of few minutes.
Conclusion

Recommendations
The study has some limitations which I will discuss in this section to
help others try and overcome these limitations. This project report
talks about the dimension of cricket stadiums but one can go ahead
and find the data for average runs scored in 1st innings and 2nd
innings and how it affects the result of a cricket match. This project
report does not talk about how different time of the day impacts the
result of the match. For example if match is in night how much
factor will a dew play and if match is played in morning how will
fresh nature of pitch will impact the result of the match. This report
does not talk about on various grounds how toss also plays an
important role in the result of a cricket match. Lastly this project
does not talk about the performances of recent emerging players and
how it will define the future of cricket. Upon that a researcher can
56
take different players for different formats of cricket, will help a
researcher understand things in a better way. The result will then be
more reliable.
