Sura 1 (Surah Fatiha)

Theme:
The main theme of this passage is Allah with the created world. His qualities of
mercy and forgiveness are highlighted here. It is God who presides over judgment
and controls the worlds. He is Master of all creation so only He is deserving of
worship. The first few verses establish God as Lord of the Worlds, then mercy is
established then guidance is sought. In the next verses, the believer confirms that
Allah is the one to ask for help, and it is He who can grant it for anything. Finally
in the last verses the believer prays for guidance as God gives guidance to those
who ask for the straight path. It is man’s duty to beg before Him for
guidance: “and your Lord says: call on Me, I shall answer your
supplication” (40:60).
Importance:
Surah Fatiha plays an important role in Muslim lives. It is a remarkable experience
of worship that defines humans relationship with creator. It is a conversation with
God and He is the Creator, and God is replying to each verse. Through it humans
communicate with God. Holy Prophet Pbuh called this surah as Umm ul Kitab(The
mother of the book). This is recited in every prayer as Holy Prophet PBUH said,
'No prayer is accepted without Surah Fatiha'. Muslims use this to ask for
guidance (given in the Qur'an and Sunna), for mercy and help, even outside the
prayer. This passage reminds Muslims about Judgment on the final day by Allah.
This grows awareness for the preparation of the final day to face Allah. Submitting
to God brings humbleness into lives, and because Muslims are accountable to God
they pray to be guided on the straight path.

Sura 2.21–22
Theme:
The main theme is Allah’s relationship with the created world. It tells that God is
the creator of humankind so they should only worship Him. God, as a creator, is
only worthy of worship and His worship creates piety. He also created what is for
the benefit of humankind like the earth as a resting place, sky like a ceiling
overhead, the third blessing is the brain that allah sends down to provide
sustenance to His creatures. He has made permanent arrangements and set up
systems for that. Thus humankind should not commit the greatest sin of associating
partners/rivals with God as He is the only creator and sustainer. The Quran says,
“… there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me” (21;25)
Importance:
The themes of these verses invite people to contemplate about God and nature.
Humans must worship their creator. The natural world is a comfort for humankind,
and so they should look after it. God provides the world for humankind so humans
should be responsible for looking after their environment and not be wasteful.
Humans should acknowledge who their sustenance has come from and rely on God
for everything. These verses also inculcate a sense of gratitude to God for his
countless bounties. Muslims realize that only He deserves all our praise and
worship and we should show gratitude for his favours through obedience and acts
of worship i.e salat, fasting or pilgrimage etc. Muslims should therefore show
gratitude to Allah by worshipping Allah alone without setting rivals with God.

Sura 96.1–5
Theme:
The theme of this passage is Allah’s relationship with the created world. These five
verses were revealed to Holy Prophet PBUH as the first divine revelation. The
main themes are God is the Creator which is shown in this Sura through the way
humans were created from a clot of blood. It focuses on Allah’s mercy on
humanity in raising them from an insignificant state to an exalted one. He gives
creation what they need, in this case, knowledge of God. This shows His
generosity. There is an emphasis on the importance of knowledge and the
knowledge that God gives to humankind.
Importance:
The importance of this Sura is that it allows humans to understand how God
created them from nothing. Seeking knowledge is encouraged and so humankind
should try their best to learn throughout their lives, especially religious knowledge
so they can get to know their Lord. Each subject, RE, science, etc has a value to it
and can help humans get closer to God. It also helps Muslims understand how
prophet hood and Islam started, and they should reflect upon what God has sent
down for them to help them live their lives. Therefore, they should be grateful to
God.

Sura 99 (Surah Zilzal)

Theme:
Surah Zilzal, a madni surah, presents the fundamental quranic theme of God’s
relationship with the created world.
• It depicts the last day and the end of time when everything known will be
destroyed by a tremendous and more far-reaching convulsion than any earthquake
we know. The Quran says, “When the earth is flattened out and throws out
whatever it contains and gets empty.” [Ch 84: V 3-4]
• On the day of resurrection the dead will be raised from their graves and the
justice will be done in the light of the truth. In this world good and evil are mixed
together. But on that day each grade of good and evil will be sorted out.
• people will be responsible for their actions on earth and given their accounts; God
will give people their accounts, which will take them to Heaven or Hell.

Importance
The Last Day creates a fear of accountability, reminding Muslims to stay on the
straight path. Good deeds will be rewarded encouraging Muslims to do good at all
times, like following the Pillars, being honest and helping others. It keeps them
away from disliked things like lying, cheating, gossiping and not obeying God’s
commandments. It helps Muslims understand the temporary nature of the world
which can prevent them from being distracted by worldly things, whether it’s
fashion, money, gaming or work. It also tells Muslims that even a most ordinary
good or evil will be accounted. Therefore no good deed should be left undone.

Surah Naas
Theme:
Sura 114 (Allah’s relationship with the created world) The main themes are: ∙ This
is the last surah of Holy Quran and was revealed with Surah Falaq, collectively
known as The two protections. God’s refuge – only He can help in times of need,
in this case from jinn and men. ∙ Seek help only from Him. He created everything
so controls everything, even mischief makers. ∙ It’s a warning of those who whisper
evil/bad ideas to humans, and then disappear and leave them on their own ∙ God is
a protector from these things and this sura makes up one of the suras of protection.
Sura 114 The main theme is Allah’s relationship with the created world.
Candidates will develop these themes in their own way, e.g. • Sovereignty: God
establishes Himself as Master (Rabb), King (Malik) and true God (Ilah). • God’s
refuge: Only He can help in times of need, in this case from jinn and humans. Seek
help only from Him. • Control: He created everything so controls everything, even
mischief makers. • Warning: It’s a warning of those who whisper evil/bad ideas to
humans, and then disappear and leave them on their own • Protection: God is a
protector from jinn and humankind.
Importance:
Sura 114 • Through these verses Muslims get to know the kind of evils/mischief
they have to be wary of, e.g. jinn, humans or internal whisperings such as jealousy.
• This means they should be aware of what’s happening to them so they can
recognise the signs of mischief and temptations. • Praying and doing good deeds
strengthens reliance on God. Reciting this sura with the other ‘qul’s’ is a source of
protection. • God is the King so it is Him who people should seek refuge with Sura
