GOLD

Since civilisation began, gold has been regarded as a symbol of power and wealth. In many societies gold was
seen as a magic substance which could protect people against illness or evil spirits. It is the one material that has
always been accepted in exchange for goods or services. Mankind never seems to have enough gold and the
search for it has driven men mad. The need to search for gold has been compared to a disease and it is called
‘gold fever’. In spite of man’s constant search for gold, the amount which has been produced since the beginning
of time is only enough to make a solid block of eighteen cubic metres, the size of a large house.

Because gold is workable, almost indestructible, durable, reflective and conductive, it has a number of
industrial uses. About ten per cent of the annual production is used for industrial processes. Because gold is
valuable, bright, rare, attractive and durable, it has always been used for decorative purposes. Gold works of art
were created by many of the great civilisations of the past and may be seen in museums all over the world.

The first gold coin was issued by King Croesus of Lydia in the sixth century BC. Today gold still plays an
important part in the international monetary system. About thirty years´ production of gold is being held by
central banks and monetary authorities in spite of efforts to reduce its importance. New deposits of gold are being
found and old mines are being reopened. Undoubtedly gold has always been valued as a protection against
inflation and it is likely to continue being so. Gold can be bought by private investors in the form of bars, coins
and medals, as well as jewellery.

The Indian-Pacific left Sydney and headed westward. Thirty years had passed since I last took the train across
this island continent to Perth in Western Australia. In those primitive days, the journey was a bone-shaking,
sleepless test of energy and patience. Looking around my spacious, luxurious cabin, I happily thought that this
trip would be a welcome improvement on its awful predecessor.

The Indian-Pacific is like a miniature city on wheels and relies on little outside assistance as it makes its huge
journey across an ancient and mysterious land. Approaching the foothills of the Blue Mountains, I began to
explore this long city that would be my home for the next 65 hours.

The scenery was spectacular as the Indian-Pacific climbed its way through the Blue Mountains. The
mountains are so named because of the blue haze caused by the eucalyptus trees. This uniquely Australian
phenomenon inspired my imagination.

That night I slept without interruption for six splendid hours. Waking refreshed, I drew the blind and saw a
different world. A vast, empty panorama raced past my window. This was the Australian outback: red sandy
plains, low vegetation and few trees.

We had travelled almost 1,000 km from Sydney on our way to the first stop, the ‘Silver City’ of Broken Hill.
The mines of Broken Hill produce about two million tons of zinc and silver per year.

By mid-afternoon, we were passing through wide, waving fields as the great train drew closer to Adelaide, the
capital city of South Australia. The engines are changed in Adelaide so there is a two-hour stop, during which
a tour of the city is arranged for those who want to take a closer look at this elegant town.

What Does a Million Dollars Buy?

“What would you do with a million dollars?” most people tend to give similar answers: “Quit my
job,” “Buy my dream house,” or “Go travelling.” People often think that having a million dollars
would make all their dreams come true. In reality, a million dollars may not really be that much
money.

In most industrialized countries, prices from food to transport to university fees have steadily
increased over the years. Housing prices in particular have risen greatly. The main reason is that the
population has increased, but there are fewer homes available for sale or rent. Housing in city
centers also costs more than ever before. People moved from the city center to suburbs to escape
overcrowding and noise. Today, many are moving back because they want to be closer to their
workplace. Since space is limited in these areas, supply has not caught up with rising demand, and
prices have gone up as a result.

Inflation is another important reason for the rise in the cost of living. Over the last 150 years, as
prices have gone up, the value of money has gone down, so we now need more money to buy
things. Of course, people now earn more money than they did 150 years ago, but they also spend
more on necessities such as food, medicine, and housing. Due to this increased cost of living and a
tendency for younger generations to spend more, people are actually saving less than ever before.
People also have to spend more on health care because they live longer; many people in developed
countries now live into their 80s or 90s.

Due to increased demand for housing, higher inflation, and a longer life expectancy, a million
dollars may not be enough to live on. Of course, where you live and how long you live will
influence how far a million dollars can go. To be able to travel the world, and build your dream
home, you may have to be a millionaire many times over.

Task A Underline the parts of the article that tell us the following things. There is one extra sentence.

1 Property is more expensive because there’s greater demand and less supply.

2 The price of properties in cities is higher than ever before.

3 The fact that there were far too many inhabitants in noisy cities was one of the reasons that made
people choose to live in suburban areas.
4 Young people are not spendthrifts.

Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank lines below.

4 You can do whatever you want with a million dollars. T F

5 The cost of living has not gone up due to inflation. T F

THE TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL GIVE YOU SUPERPOWERS

Binoculars? They’re so 20th century! These days you can wear contact lenses if you want telescopic vision.
Thanks to four tiny metallic mirrors in the lenses, everything you’re looking at appears to be three times
closer than it really is. It’s true that you can’t see things that are hundreds of kilometres away like Superman,
but the power of these lenses is only going to increase with time.

And sight isn’t the only sense that can be improved by technology. New high-tech ear buds let you control
the sounds you hear. Do you want to avoid your Dad’s terrible taste in music while you chat to him, or listen
to a private conversation on the other side of a room? You can do that by adjusting your ear buds’ setting in
your smartphone.

People may not bother going to the gym in the future when there’s an easier way to get stronger: wear an
Exoskeleton. Like Ironman’s suit, this is a kind of wearable robot that fits around your body and gives you
superstrength. One exoskeleton which is already available allows you to lift 200 kg as if it were just 4 kg.
There’s only one problem: no one can work out how to produce a battery that’s powerful enough for this
amazing invention.

Imagine always being able to choose the perfect birthday present for your Mum without asking her for ideas,
or knowing what your friends think of your new hairstyle. Who wouldn’t want to be able to mind-read?
Scientists already have equipment that can guess which word you’re thinking of with a 61% success rate. It
will be a life-changing development for people who are unable to communicate with speech.

For the last eight years, Norway has registered the highest quality of life among the world’s nations.
Norwegians can also expect to get a good education, find the job they want – unemployment is only 2.5
per cent – enjoy good health and live a long life. People say the prisons are quite comfortable too!

Norway has not always been a rich country. Just 80 years ago Norwegians were emigrating to the USA in
their thousands in search of a better life. The rise in oil prices in the 1970s changed all that. But
Norway’s success is not only the result of its huge reserves of oil. Other countries have had such riches
and wasted them. It is also due to the Norwegians’ natural way of administering their money and their
strong work ethic.

When you arrive in Oslo for the first time, don’t expect to be met with Dubai-style skyscrapers,
entrepreneurs in designer suits and rows of Ferraris and Porsches. Norway may be rich, but it is modest
in its wealth. Norwegians also work hard and are always near the top in surveys of global worker
productivity rates. But life is not only about work, the government has recently passed laws that
emphasise the importance of family and time off, offering generous maternity and paternity leave,
subsidised childcare and long holidays as well.

Also, the country is saving for the future. Every dollar earned from oil is put straight into what is now the
world’s biggest pension fund – worth over $200 billion. Extraordinarily, none of this money is allowed to
be spent on state infrastructure projects. It is not even invested in new schools and hospitals. But at a time
when most other countries are wondering how they will finance the pensions of a growing retired
population, Norway is sitting comfortably.

Neil Armstrong, the most famous of the astronauts on Apollo 11, has been called ‘the ultimate
professional’. He was hired to do a job. He did the job and then he went home and kept quiet about it. But
how can the man who first set foot on the Moon remain such a mystery?
Armstrong developed a passion for flying in his childhood in the 1930s. He learnt to fly before he had
graduated from high school in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Later on, he did a course in aerospace engineering at
Purdue University which was sponsored by the United States Navy. Due to that, he was obliged to serve as
a naval pilot for three years and he saw action almost immediately: he flew 78 missions in the Korean War.
He left the Navy in 1952 and two years later, he got a job with the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory
where he flew experimental aircraft. He reached speeds of 6,615 kilometres an hour and altitudes of over
200,000 feet.
Owing to his distinguished performance, he was selected for a space plane pilot training programme in
1960 but shortly after that, news began to circulate that NASA was looking for astronauts for their Apollo
programme. Incredibly excited, he applied for the job and in 1962 he was accepted. The rest, as they say, is
history.
When the astronauts returned from the Apollo 11 Moon landing of July 1969, Armstrong became a teacher
at the University of Cincinnati and at the weekend went flying to get away from all the attention. In 40
years he only gave two interviews. Why? Certainly, he felt fortunate to have had the chance to fulfil his
dream, but he did not feel any more special than the thousands of people who worked on the Apollo space
programme. He was just the pilot.

Task A Underline the parts of the article that tell us the following things. There is one extra sentence.

1 Armstrong fought for the USA.

2 In the mid-1950s he flew spacecraft.
3 Armstrong had already trained as a space pilot before the Apollo 11 Project.

Sri Lanka is considered to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It is just smaller in
area than Scotland. People who live there sometimes call it by an old name which means “Golden
Island” and, in legend, Sinbad the Sailor is said to have visited it and called it ‘Lucky Find’. It is
with some justification that he referred to Sri Lanka as his ‘paradise on earth’.

As the island lies not very far from the equator, the climate of Sri Lanka is said to be tropical. It is
hot all the year round and there is very little difference between summer and winter. Moreover,
heavy rains fall during the monsoon season, causing the climate to be hot and humid. Consequently,
vegetation grows dense and thick, and the jungle is so impenetrable that it is difficult to proceed
without cutting a path with a machete.

Although the main centres of population are in the flat, fertile coastal regions, many people live in
the mountainous country inland. This area contains mountain peaks, two of which —Adam’s Peak
and Mount Pedro— are twice as high as any mountain in Britain. But, in spite of the mountainous
and rough terrain, the communications are good and it is easy to travel around the island by road
and rail. There are four airports, the main one being Bandaranaike, situated 34 km north of
Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

With its rich natural resources, Sri Lanka has an agricultural economy. Tea, which is grown on the
slopes of the hills, is the island’s most important export. Coconuts grow in abundance, and the sea is
rich with fish, which people catch in small boats with large sails.

GAP YEAR TRAVELLING

A gap year between school and university could be of benefit to your future, especially if you make
the most of it by working and travelling abroad. Not only are you likely to increase your self-
confidence by living in another country but you will also add valuable work experience to your CV
– a bonus when it comes to job hunting after college.

Planning to take twelve to fifteen months off need not be difficult if you do your homework.
Although travelling or working abroad for voluntary organisations may prove expensive if you lack
sufficient funds, it is possible to combine your travels with paid work experience.

Since 1962, BUNACAMP, a non-profit organisation, has enabled thousands of full-time students to
work in America and Canada each year. There is a wide range of programmes to choose from and
they are designed to be self-financing, so you should be able to earn back your initial expenses and
have sufficient money to pay for your post-work travels.

Work America and Work Canada are open to full-time students and those who have postponed their
entry and have a place at university for the following year. Those taking part in the programme can

HOW TO AVOID TEEN TANTRUMS * ON HOLIDAY

The concept of the happy family holiday appears to go wrong when children reach adolescence.
Teenagers generally prefer not to go on holiday with their parents but as they are given no option
A ____, problems arise. There are additional tensions on holiday when families are brought together
for long periods of time, and there is an expectation of everyone enjoying themselves.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen that way. So what does it take to have a family holiday that
doesn’t end in tears?

Teenagers want to assert their independence. They may begin to resent help from their parents,
seeing it as interference, and above all, they like to be among their peers, especially on holiday.

So what works with teenagers on holiday? Some specific destinations as well as special holiday
options may prove more popular than others. The popularity of these destinations seems to be
related B ____ to the type of people who go there.

An option that many families have tried is going on holiday with another family that also has
teenage children. Nevertheless, this only works if the teenagers as well as the adults are compatible.
Personality clashes C ____.

Teenagers enjoy the beach as long as they are surrounded by peers. Get the teenagers to take a
friend with them, so that they can go out by themselves. Finally, something important to remember
is that teenagers are not precisely keen on walking, fishing or cycling holidays. And if you are
planning a holiday to improve your teenagers’ minds, forget it. They also reject any holiday that
claims to be cultural, romantic, scenic or relaxing.

* TANTRUM: an uncontrolled outburst of anger and frustration, typically in a young child.

The Black Falcon – The Robot Doctor

While studying engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Akhil Madhani first saw
robots in action and was impressed by their huge potential. He considered the possibility of
replacing people with robots in difficult and dangerous situations such as when security forces
dismantle explosive devices without endangering lives or causing injuries.

Madhani was born in 1968 in Nairobi, Kenya. His father, an orthopaedic surgeon, and his mother, a
gynaecologist, are of Indian origin. The family emigrated to the United States and settled in Seattle,
Washington, when Madhani was two years old.

If his father had not been a surgeon, the idea of using robot technology in surgeries could have
never occurred to Akhil. He watched his father as he performed minimally invasive surgery, which
allows doctors to reduce the impact of their work inside the patient’s body by using advanced
technology manually controlled.

Akhil Madhani had the idea of using computerized, remote-controlled robots instead of non-
computarised instruments. He invented the Falcon Robot, a long thin arm, with a metal articulated
part and two tiny mechanical fingers at the end. The surgeon operates the small hand using a
joystick. The tiny robot’s fingers are more versatile than human fingers, so they can perform
complex and delicate surgical procedures.

Because it is so small, the Falcon can actually go inside the patient accessing the part of the body to
be operated on. The incision itself is tiny, which minimises the shock to the body and the duration
of the surgery. The Falcon can make any kind of surgeries easier, but its most important application
is in the heart operations because it can enter between the ribs. It also has another advantage. Giving
commands to a robot requires far less effort than actually carrying a procedure. It is less exhausting
for a surgeon and so eliminates much of the risk of human error – mistakes can easily be made
when you are tired.

The scientific world has already recognised its enormous potential and Akhil has been awarded
prestigious prizes for his invention.

Task A Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank lines below.

1 Mahdani had the idea of using computerized, remote-controlled robots in demanding T F

surgeries because his father was a surgeon and he was familiar with the topic.

2 Operating computerized, remote-controlled robots instead of non-computarised T F

Star Wars and the Hero Myth

Critics of the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens have called the film unoriginal and
predictable because the story so closely mirrors the very first Star Wars film in 1977. But, in fact, both films
follow a structure that pre-dates all Hollywood films, that of the 'hero myth'. That's because director George
Lucas based Star Wars on the ideas in Joseph Campbell's 1949 book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Later
editions of Campbell's book even featured Star Wars' hero Luke Skywalker on the front cover.

In his book, Campbell analyses myths from all over the world to describe the 'monomyth' – a pattern that you
can see in myths from every culture. In short, a hero sets off from home on a journey, where he overcomes
obstacles and defeats enemies to return with a prize. It's a tale that has been told for thousands of years, from
the Ancient Greeks with The Odyssey to JK Rowling's Harry Potter books.

George Lucas was one of the early film directors to directly base his story on the 17 stages of the hero's
journey. Typically the hero starts the story living an ordinary life, but something happens that calls them to an
adventure that changes everything.

According to Campbell, the hero at first refuses the call to adventure, but a mentor appears who helps them
and they decide to 'cross the threshold' and travel into the 'special world' where the adventure happens. The
next stage consists of passing tests, fighting enemies and meeting friends as the hero prepares to face their
biggest challenge.

Next, the hero overcomes obstacles in order to face their greatest challenge. There often comes a moment
when they face death or loss and that experience gives them the strength to finally defeat the enemy. When
heroes succeed, they return from the special world, changed by their experiences forever.

Task A: Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank lines below.

2 Other film directors after George Lucas have carefully followed the hero myth structure. T F

TO TWITTER OR NOT TO TWITTER?

Some people claim that social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat have a very
negative impact on people’s emotional ability to make friends in real life. There has been a great deal of
speculation about the long-term impact of their use on people’s social lives and much of it has centred on the
possibility that these sites are damaging users’ capacity to build real relationships, pushing them away from
participating in the offline world and increasing a deep sense of social isolation. According to many of these
negative studies, Twitter or Facebook “friends” or Instagram followers can eventually become much more
important than real friends and neighbours.

However, contrary to such fears, recent psychological research has suggested that the frequent users of social
networking sites actually experience higher standards of social happiness. In fact, people who use such sites
actually have a higher number of close relationships in their personal life and are much more likely to be
involved in religious, civic and political activities than those who don’t use social networks.

This clearly indicates a profound and notable transformation in our concept of social relationships. It is said
that online emotional support and companionship obtained by interactiong with other people on the web is
equivalent to roughly half the total support the average person receives from a friend or a live-in partner. Social
networking sites help people with busy lives to find new ways of staying in touch with friends and family and
providing regular updates. Unless something completely new comes along, the world of networked individuals
will carry on evolving – who knows what the future holds for our personal relationships?

Studying Abroad
Have you always dreamed of travelling, meeting lots of people, and maybe picking up a language or two? No
matter what country you live in, you can learn world trade in Japan, study in France, or take dancing lessons in
Ghana. How? You could join a study program where high-school and college students live with a host family in a
foreign country. Semester, summer, and year-long programmes allow you to attend school, take intensive language
courses or perform community service in another country.

Besides the excitement of travelling, you will experience new customs, foods, art, and music. A _____. This is
because your viewpoint will be of an active member of the community, not as a tourist.

Another reason for studying abroad is that you’ll become more self-assured. Renata, who studied in Caracas,
Venezuela says that she learned how to be better at standing up for herself and her beliefs, and to express herself
in another language. B ________ In addition, living away from home can also help you adjust in the transition
to college and adulthood. Matthew says when he returned from studying in Australia, he was more mature and
had a genuine interest in international affairs that set him apart from his peers.

Although many academic programmes abroad have academic requirements, you do not necessarily have to have
the highest grades or marks to be eligible. And most do not have language requirements. Who you are is as
important as your academic record. C _______.

If you really hate change and do not like the idea of figuring things out on your own, then studying abroad may
not be for you. It’s important to be honest with yourself and really think about what you expect. You could end up
having a miserable time if you don’t.

Task A: Complete gaps A, B, C with the corresponding phrase from 1 to 5. There are two extra
phrases.

meeting different types of people, and can handle challenges.

4- What could give you more self-confidence than that?

Volunteering Abroad

Have you ever wanted to make a difference in the world, meet new people, and learn new skills? No matter
where you live, you can volunteer in a community project in India, teach English in Thailand, or help wildlife
conservation in Costa Rica. How? You could join a volunteer programme where you work with a local
organization in a foreign country. Short-term and long-term programmes allow you to contribute to a

Besides the satisfaction of helping others, you will experience new ways of living, eating, communicating,
and working. A _____. This is because you will be immersed in the local culture and interact with the people
on a daily basis. Another benefit of volunteering abroad is that you will develop your personal and
professional skills.

Maria, who volunteered in an orphanage in Kenya, says that she learned how to be more compassionate,
patient, and creative. B _______. In addition, living abroad can also help you discover your passions and
interests, and inspire you to pursue your goals. David says when he came back from volunteering in Peru, he
was more motivated and confident to apply for his dream job. Although many volunteer programmes abroad
have age and health requirements, you do not necessarily have to have any specific qualifications or

First impressions

Many experts regard first impressions as a valuable instrument for interpreting people’s behaviour. A __________ .
Scientist Alexander Todorov believes that very often our first impressions are wrong. When two people meet for the first
time, physical impressions are immediate. Before they have a chance to say a word, their senses are in a state of great
activity; they are picking up and storing information about each other. They register their appearance, their smell, their
body language and how they are dressed at the very same time.

But analyze how reliable first impressions are. Take the story of Jake and Caroline. Jake didn’t like Caroline when he first
met her. “She seemed cold and distant. She made almost no eye contact and she didn’t seem to listen to me. She even
appeared to be uncomfortable while being with me.” B __________. “Caroline was a completely different person. She was
warm, friendly and smiled a lot. When she told me that she had had personal problems two days before we first met, that
explained everything. It taught me to be more careful about making assumptions about people based on first expressions.”

However wrong they can be, first impressions are a necessary survival mechanism. Thousands of years ago they helped
people decide how to react in potentially dangerous situations. C __________ . According to some, we can learn to read
first impressions better. We can also learn to create more powerful first impressions. Professor Helen Trent, a specialist in
interpersonal relations, has studied the practice of good communicators. “Research shows that people who can make others
feel good about themselves are excellent at creating positive first impressions. We call these people “Powerful
Communicators” or PCs.
