All resubmissions must be authorised by the Internal Quality Assurer. Only one resubmission is
possible per assessment, providing:
The learner has met initial deadlines set in the assignment or has met an agreed deadline
extension.
The tutor considers that the learner will be able to provide improved evidence without further
guidance.
Evidence submitted for assessment / resubmission has been authenticated and accompanied by
a signed and dated declaration of authenticity by the learner.
Any resubmission evidence must be submitted within 10 working days of receipt of results of
assessment.

Requirement:
You will use the information that has been delivered and discussed in the previous sessions, along
with additional resources provided for research to complete the tasks detailed within this Assignment.
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to provide evidence that will
enable them to be credited with grading criteria listed above.
Scenario:
You are an apprentice working in maintenance planning, you are required to assist with the
calculations as your manager wants to verify your mathematical competence involving trigonomic
methods and formula to determine areas and volumes by setting you tasks to complete and solve.
Assessment method:
A report containing the results of calculations and graphic evidence to support the use of trigonometric
methods and standard formula for the determination of areas and volumes. Completed in controlled
conditions.
Resources required:
Scientific calculator
Tasks:
Instructions to candidates:
All working must be shown.
All engineering prefixes and units must be present and correct where appropriate.
All questions must be attempted.

Task 1: P4
Solve circular and triangular measurement problems involving the use of radian, sine, cosine and
tangent functions
Juniper Hill causes the track between Capminster and Dunwall to circumnavigate around the base.
The track is split into a curve, centred at the peak of the hill, and a straight section as shown below:
Capminster
Dunwall
3500 m
120 ° 20 °
a) Convert the internal angle of the curved section into radians.

b) Calculate the plan area of the arc sector encapsulated by the curved section.
c) Use the sine function to prove the radius of the curved section is about 1200m.
d) Using the principle of arc lengths and the cosine function, find the total track length
between Capminster and Dunwall.

Task 2: P4
Solve circular and triangular measurement problems involving the use of radian, sine, cosine
and tangent functions.
Measurements by a team of surveyors, of Juniper Hill were taken from Dunwall. The angle of
5
inclination to the summit was found to be rads .

a) Convert the measured angle from radians to degrees.
b) Use your degree measurement and the tangent function to find the height of Juniper Hill
above Dunwall.

Task 3: P5
Sketch each of the three trigonometric functions (sine, cosine and tangent) over a complete cycle (0°
- 360°).
Produce a table of values for each function to prove their graphs.
Tables must be complete and correctly labelled.
Graphs must be properly scaled and labelled.
Curves must be drawn with a smooth, continuous line.
Asymptotes should be clearly labelled where appropriate.
