Honda MSX125 Grom 2013-2018
12 Swingarm
Removal
1 Support the motorcycle so that no weight is transmitted through any part of the rear suspension (see
illustration 11.1) . Tie the front brake lever to the handlebar to ensure the bike can’t roll forward. Position a
support under the swingarm so that it does not drop when the shock absorber is detached, but also making
sure that the weight of the machine is off the rear suspension so that the shock is not compressed.
2 Remove the rear wheel (see Chapter 5 ).
3 On 2016-on models unscrew the nut on the silencer mounting bolt, then withdraw the bolt, noting the
washer (see illustration 3.5) .
4 Remove the chain guard/hugger (see illustrations) .
12.4a Undo the screws (arrowed) on the
left…
12.4b …and the screw on the right…
12.4c …and remove the hugger, noting
how it locates over the bracket at the
front
5 Displace the rear brake fluid reservoir (see illustration 3.6a) . Release the rear brake light switch wiring
clip from the lug on the footrest bracket (see illustration 3.6b) .
6 Unscrew the nut from the right-hand end of the swingarm pivot bolt, holding the bolt head to prevent it
turning (see illustration 3.7a) . Unscrew the right-hand footrest bracket bolt and displace the bracket – take
care not to strain the brake hoses and the brake light switch wiring (see illustrations 3.7b and c) . Slide the
washer off the pivot bolt or remove it from the inner side of the footrest bracket if it stuck there (illustration
3.11c) .
7 Hold the welded nut on the brake hose guide bracket to prevent the bracket distorting and unscrew the
guide bolt (see illustrations) . Release the brake hose from the hook near the front of the swingarm, then
displace the caliper assembly from the swingarm and tie it up out of the way (see illustration) .
12.7a Hold the nut on the inner side of
the bracket and unscrew the bolt…
12.7b …to free the brake hose
12.7c Displace the caliper, noting how it
locates, and support it clear
8 Note the alignment of the gearchange linkage arm on the shaft, then unscrew the bolt (see illustration
3.15) . Unscrew the left-hand footrest bracket bolt (see illustration 3.16a) .
9 Unscrew the nut and withdraw the bolt securing the bottom of the shock absorber to the swingarm (see
illustration 11.7) .
10 Pull the left-hand footrest bracket away from the bike, bringing the swingarm pivot bolt and the washer
that sits between the bracket and the swingarm with it and sliding the gearchange linkage arm off the shaft
(see illustration 3.16b) , until the swingarm pivot bolt is out, then manoeuvre the swingarm back out of the
frame (see illustration) . Remove the washer from the pivot bolt and draw the bolt out of the bracket (see
illustrations 12.17b and a) .
12.10 Withdraw the bolt and remove the
arm
11 Remove the chain slider from the swingarm if necessary, noting the shaped washers (see illustrations) .
If it is badly worn or damaged, it should be replaced with a new one – there is a wear limit mark on the side
(see illustration) .
12.11a Undo the two screws…
12.11b …pull the two pegs out…
12.11c …and draw the slider off, noting
how it locates over the lug at the front
12.11d If the slider is worn to the bottom
of the cut-out it is time for a new one
Inspection
12 Thoroughly clean the swingarm, removing all traces of dirt, corrosion and grease.
13 Check the swingarm closely, looking for obvious signs of wear such as heavy scoring, or for damage
such as cracks or distortion.
14 Check the pivot bush in each side of the swingarm for wear or damage (see illustration) . The bushes
are not available separately.
12.14 Check the bush in each side
Installation
15 If removed, fit the chain slider, making sure it locates correctly over the lug at the front, and the mounting
bosses fit in the holes (see illustrations 12.11c, b and a) .
16 Clean the swingarm pivot bolt and smear it with grease.
17 Slide the pivot bolt through the left-hand footrest bracket, then fit the washer onto the bolt and up against
the bracket (see illustrations) .
12.17a Insert the bolt…
12.17b …then slide the washer on
18 Position the swingarm, making sure the drive chain (unless removed) is looped over the front, and slide
the pivot bolt through from the left-hand side (see illustration 12.10) . Before seating the left-hand footrest
bracket, make sure you align the gearchange linkage arm clamp slit with the punch mark and slide the arm
onto the shaft (see illustration 3.16b) . Align the footrest bracket and tighten its bolt finger-tight (see
illustration 3.16a) . Fit and tighten the gearchange linkage arm bolt (see illustration 3.15) .
19 Fit the washer onto the right-hand end of the bolt (see illustration 3.11c) . Fit the right-hand footrest
bracket, fit the bolt and tighten finger-tight (see illustrations 3.7c and b) . Fit the nut onto the swingarm
pivot bolt, hold the head of the bolt and tighten the nut to 54 Nm (see illustration 3.7a) . Now tighten the
footrest bracket bolts to 31 Nm. Check the swingarm moves up and down.
20 Align the bottom of the shock absorber, insert the bolt from the left, fit the nut and tighten to 44 Nm (see
illustration 11.7) .
21 Install the remaining components in reverse order.
22 Check and adjust the drive chain slack (see Chapter 1 ). Check the operation of the rear suspension and
brake before taking the machine on the road.
