Division is used in various situations in our day-to-day life

House -

In the current pandemic situation, in the

absence of domestic helpers, the
household chores are shared equally
among the family members.

Teamwork -

Dividing responsibilities equally for the

successful completion of a task.

Parts of division
Quotient - The number resulting from
dividing a number by another number.

Divisor - The number that divides another

number.

Dividend - The number that is being divided.

Remainder - Remainder is the number that

is left after the division is done.

Properties of division
If a number is divided by 1, If a number other than zero
the quotient is the number is divided by itself, the
itself. quotient is 1.

Ex. 56 ➗ 1 = 56 Ex. 289 ➗ 289 = 1

Every division sum has a

If zero is divided by a division fact and a
number (other than 0), the multiplication fact to verify it.
quotient is zero.
Ex. 18 ➗ 6 = 3
Ex. 0 ➗ 672 = 0 Division fact : 18 ➗ 3 = 6
Multiplication fact : 6 X 3 = 18

Division by a 2-digit number

Step 1: As the divisor is of two digits, consider the first two

digits of the dividend. Since 46 < 64, write 1 as quotient
above the hundreds place and subtract 46 from 64, to get 18.

Step 2: Bring the next digit down. The number becomes 183.
46 ✕ 3 =138, which is less than 183. Write 3 as the quotient
above the tens place and subtract 138 from 183 to get 45.

Step 3: Bring the next digit down. The number becomes 458.

46 ✕ 9 = 414, which is less than 458. We write 9 above the
ones place as the quotient and subtract 414 from 458 to get
44.

As 44 < 46 and there are no more numbers left to divide, we

get the Quotient =139 and the Reminder = 44.

Verification of division
(Divisor X Quotient) + Remainder = Dividend

Verification :

(46 X 139) + 44

= 6394 + 44

=6438

Word problem

A train covers a distance of 8928 km in 24 hours. How much distance does it cover in 1 hour?

Solution:

Distance covered by the train = 8928 km.

Time taken by the train to cover 8928 km = 24

hours.

∴ Distance covered by the train in 1 hour = 8928

km ÷ 24 hours = 372 km

Simplify: 1428 x 3 - 13392 ÷ 9 + 177045 ÷ 15 - 211 of 10

1428 x 3 -13392 ÷ 9 + 177045 ÷ 1221 - 211 of 10, Firstly, work on the expression with ‘of’ operator,

211 of 10 = 2110

= 1428 x 3 - 13392 ÷ 9 + 177045 ÷ 15 - 2110, Next, 13392 ÷ 9 = 1488 and 177045 ÷ 15 = 11803

= 1428 x 3 - 1488 + 11803 - 2110, Next, 1428 x 3 = 4284

= 4284 - 1488 + 11803 - 2110 Next, 4284 - 1488 = 2796

= 2796 + 11803 - 2110 Next, 2796 + 11803 = 14599

= 14599 - 2110 Next, 14599 - 2110 = 12489

= 12489
