WHAT IS HANDICRAFT ?
A handicraft is a traditional main sector of
craft making and applies to a wide range of
creative and design activities that are
related to making things with one's hands
and skill, including work with textiles,
moldable and rigid materials, paper, plant
fibers, clay, etc.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HANDICRAFT IN THE PHILIPPINES
From north to south, each region in
the country boasts of a traditional craft
that gives a glimpse of the culture and
traditions of its people, be it basketry,
loom weaving, embroidery, pottery
making, jewelry making, wood carving,
shellcraft, or the creation of decorative
and novelty items
BASKETRY
Basket weaving is the process of
weaving or sewing pliable materials
into three-dimensional artifacts, such
as baskets, mats, mesh bags or even
furniture. Craftspeople and artists
specialized in making baskets may be
known as basket makers and basket
weavers. Basket weaving is also a rural
craft.
LOOM WEAVING
A loom is a device used to weave cloth
and tapestry. The basic purpose of any
loom is to hold the warp threads under
tension to facilitate the interweaving
of the weft threads. The precise shape
of the loom and its mechanics may
vary, but the basic function is the
same.
EMBROIDERY
Embroidery is the art of decorating
fabric or other materials using a
needle to stitch thread or yarn.
Embroidery may also incorporate
other materials such as pearls, beads,
quills, and sequins. In modern days,
embroidery is usually seen on hats,
clothing, blankets, and handbags.
Embroidery is available in a wide
variety of thread or yarn colour. It is
often used to personalize gifts or
clothing items.
POTTERY MAKING
Pottery making is the process of shaping clay
and other materials into objects and then firing
them at high temperatures to create durable,
ceramic vessels.
Pottery is made by combining naturally
occurring raw materials, such as clay, earthen
minerals, and water and shaping them into
forms. Once shaped, the clay body is fired in a
kiln at a high temperature to be hardened and
heat resistant.
JEWELRY MAKING
Jewelry making is the process of creating
ornamental pieces worn for personal decoration
or adornment. The materials can range from
stone to precious metals, and the techniques are
versatile and limitless.
In order to create these pieces, a range of
techniques are used, from the ultra-traditional
cutting of metal using a saw, through soldering,
into lost-wax casting and in more recent years
3D technologies such as laser-sintering and
digital technologies such as laser-cutting have

WOOD CARVING
Wood carving (or woodcarving) is a form of
woodworking by means of a cutting tool (knife)
in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one
hand on a chisel and one hand on a mallet,
resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in
the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden
object. The phrase may also refer to the finished
product, from individual sculptures to hand-
worked mouldings composing part of a
tracery.The techniques of wood carving
includes;Pattern, Blocking, Detailing, Surfacing,
and Smoothening
SHELLCRAFT
Shellcraft, also known as shell craft, is the craft of
making decorative objects, or of decorating
surfaces, using seashells. A celebrated shellcraft of
the Philippines utilizes the flat opalescent shell of a
bivalve mollusk known as capiz. The thin
translucent shells were individually squared and
then set like glass panes into wooden lattice
frames to be used as window shutters.

CROCHET
Crochet is a process of creating

is derived from the French term
crochet, which means 'hook'. Hooks
can be made from different materials,
sizes, and types.

A brass handicraft is an illustration

The making of brass objects today
owes its creation to the ancient
artisans who created some of the
most interesting decorations and
utility goods.
GLASS HANDICRAFT
Glass handicrafts refer to a wide
range of artistic and decorative
items made primarily from glass.
Artists craft different types of
shapes by blowing hot air in them,
cutting them and manipulating
them to create unique and
intricate pieces of handicrafts.
NEEDLE WORK
Needlework is decorative sewing
and textile arts handicrafts.
Anything that uses a needle for
construction can be called
needlework. Needlework may
include related textile crafts such
as crochet, worked with a hook, or
tatting, worked with a shuttle.
CARPET
Carpets are used for a variety of
purposes, including insulating a
person's feet from a cold tile or
concrete floor, making a room
more comfortable as a place to sit
on the floor, reducing sound from
walking, and adding decoration or
color to a room. Carpets can be
made in any color by using
differently dyed fibers.
INDIGENOUS MATERIALS
USE FOR HANDICRAFT
This are the different types of
indigenous materials use for
handicraft.
Bamboo,abaca,rattan,fibers, wood,
pandan, coconut shells,buri,capiz
shells,clay and textile.
BAMBOO
Bamboo crafts permeate all aspects of
Philippine life. Bamboo is used for house
construction, for fishing and farming
implements, for musical instruments and
much more. Bamboo items may still be
found in the handicraft section of most
public markets. The poles can be used as
containers for water or for gathering wine.
ABACA
The fibers of the self-sustaining Abaca
are used in the production of handicraft
products such as: handbags, hats, shoes,
slippers, lamps, carpets, accessories,
clothing, furniture, and wallcoverings.

RATTAN
Around 20% of rattan palm species are
economically important and are
traditionally used in Southeast Asia in
producing wickerwork furniture,
baskets, canes, woven mats, cordage,
and other handicrafts. Rattan canes are
one of the world's most valuable non-
timber forest products.
FIBERS
Long strands of molecules
interwoven to form a linear, string-
like structure are known as 'Fibres'.
Fibers are natural or man-made such
as cotton, silk, jute, etc. Fibers were
discovered when early people
realized the need to cover and
protect their own hair and skin from
the weather.
WOOD
Wood is a natural, organic material
used in construction to build walls,
floors, ceilings, and more. It's a
renewable resource that's strong,
durable, and versatile.
PANDAN
In the Philippines, as far back as 1837,
water from cuts made near the base of
the trunk use to stimulate urination.
Headache, arthritis, stomach spasms:
Decoction of leaves. - Poultice of fresh
leaves mixed with oil also used for
headaches. - Wound healing: Pulverized
dried leaves used to facilitate wound
healing.
COCONUT SHELL
It is also a source of other products such
as coco flour, desiccated coconut, coco
milk, coco chips, candies, latik, copra
and animal feeds. From the shell, you
can produce handicraft, novelty items,
charcoal briquettes for cooking and
activated carbon which is widely used in
purification systems.
BURI
Buri is the matured leaf used in
the manufacture of placemats,
hats and braids. The leaflets are
also used for house thatches
and wall materials especially in
the countryside. Raffia is the
young shoot or leaf of the palm.
CAPIZ SHELL
Capiz Shells, also known as Pios, are
highly in demand in the shell craft
industry. They are made into
windowpanes, chandeliers,
lampshades, and many other decorative
objects. In the town of Pilar, Gi
Shellcraft and Shell Museum offer you
an array of attractive items that you
could bring home.
CLAY
Clays are used for making pottery,
both utilitarian and decorative, and
construction products, such as
bricks, walls, and floor tiles.
Different types of clay, when used
with different minerals and firing
conditions, are used to produce
earthenware, stoneware, and
porcelain
TEXTILE
Examples of textiles being used for
day-to-day purposes include:
Clothing, including pants, shirts,
outerwear, and accessories.
Household fabrics, such as upholstery,
bath towels, bed sheets, and
tablecloths. Rope, be it used by
mountain climbers, for towing
vehicles, to tie down loads, etc.
