I. Grammar:
1. past tenses
- past simple
Use the past simple for completed events in the past and the
main points in a story.

- past continuous
Use the past continuous (past simple be + -ing form) for events
that were in progress at a specific time in the past and for
background events.
Ex. When I was doing research in Peru, we would meet every few
weeks to discuss it.
- past perfect simple
Use the past perfect simple (had + past participle) for events that
happened before the main event in the past and to describe
background events.
Ex. He’d done a lot of research about the history of people in
Canada.
2. make and let
- use make to mean cause
Ex. The simple fact that the Black Mambas are watching makes a
lot of hunters stay away.
- use let to mean allow
Ex. They don’t let hunters move freely in the park.

I. Grammar:
1. zero and first conditionals
- use the zero conditional (if/when +present, + present) to talk
about something that is generally true.
Ex. If I’m in the US, I usually shake hands.
- use the first conditional (if + present, + will + infinitive) to talk
about a possible future situation.
Ex. If I see my colleague later today, I’ll shake his hand again.
- you can also use alternatives to if in conditional sentences.
Ex. As soon as I see my friends and family, I hug them.
Ex. Usually when I greet people, I hug them, unless I feel they
don’t want to hug me.
2. quantifiers
- Use quantifiers to talk about amounts:
+ not... enough means less than what is needed.
Ex. I wasn't getting enough sleep.
+ too little means something is not enough.
Ex. Half a teaspoon is too little.
+ too much/many means that something is more than you need.
Ex. I was... staying indoors too much... spending too many hours
sitting at my desk.
+ so much/many means really a lot.
Ex. I drink so much tea when I'm working.
+ a lot of, lots of and plenty of mean a large amount of
something.
Ex. That's a lot of sugar. I drink lots of coffee. You're getting plenty
of fresh air.
+ a (tiny/little) bit of means a small amount of something.
Ex. I now put only a tiny bit of sugar in my tea.

I. Grammar:
1. second conditional
- Use the second conditional (if + past simple, would/could +
infinitive) to talk about imagined situations in the present or
future.
Ex. Hokusai would be amazed if he were alive today. (= imagined
present situation)
Ex. If I had five more years, I could become a true artist. (=
imagined future situation)
2. -ed and -ing adj
An -ed adjective describes how someone feels. I feel excited by
contemporary African dance. An -ing adjective describes the thing
that causes a feeling.
Ex. It was incredibly exciting every time we made that final
sound!
