Making an Isometric Sketch
After knowing and learning the skills in sketching, the next thing to learn is
the pictorial freehand drawing called isometric sketching.
Isometric sketch makes use of three important axes for its formation. These
are the vertical axis, the 30 degrees right cross axis, and the 30 degrees left cross
axis.
The three axes in the isometric drawing
You will notice that the object sketched below has its one corner tilted
directly toward the observer’s eye. The angle formation with imaginary horizon at
the base line is 30 degrees.
Isometric Drawing
Isometric sketching can be done easily by learning first how to sketch an
isometric box.

Steps in Sketching an Isometric Box
1. Sketch a thin horizontal line.
2. Sketch a thin vertical axis AB perpendicular to the
given line XY and forming two equal 90 degrees
angles.
3. Sketch a thin 30 degrees left cross axis, AC.
4. Sketch a thin 30 degrees right cross axis, AD.
5. Mark off distances to represent the width, length,
and thickness of the box.
6. Connect CE parallel to the vertical axis.
7. Connect DF parallel to the vertical axis.
8. Complete the drawing.

Direction:
• On the Freehand Drawing sheets, perform the given Freehand Drawing line
sketching workouts as per model shown or demonstrated by your teacher.
• Use appropriate pencil points for the isometric sketch.
• The Scoring Rubrics below will be used in evaluating your works.
Scoring Rubrics
Score Criteria
5 Sketched the isometric object without using any straight edge tools or materials.
Followed the correct techniques in making an isometric sketch of objects.
4 Sketched the isometric object without using any straight edge. The correct techniques
were not applied in all objects.
3 Sketched the isometric object but it appeared that the students used straight edge in
some instances. The correct techniques of sketching isometric objects were not applied.
2 All isometric objects were not properly sketched.
R Redraw / Repeat output – Highest possible score is 3 points.
L Late submission – Highest possible score is 3 points.
