Q1 Solution to Ventilation Question

1 Determination of air extraction rate in toilet and kitchen.
Air changes per hour (ach) in toilet = 6
Air changes per hour (ach) in toilet = 10
Air volume extraction rate for toilet = Area x height x ach
= (6 x 5 x 3) x 6 = 540 m3/h = 0.15 m3/s. [2]
Air volume extraction rate for kitchen = Area x height x ach
= (4 x 5 x 3) x 10 = 600 m3/h = 0.167 m3/s. [2]

The circular diameter, d is calculated from Q=AV equation where
Q is the flowrate and V is the air velocity. A is the area which is
represented by лd2/4.

4 Calculation of pressure drop due to duct and fittings along the index path
Pressure drop due to duct length is determined as follows:

Path Flowrate, Nearest Length Pressure Pressure

Q (m3/s) circular (m) drop, drop, Pa
duct (mm) Pa/m
A-B 0.150 268 5 0.32 1.6
[3]
B-D 0.317 268 3 1.50 4.5
D-G 0.634 367 3 1.00 3.0

The pressure drop due to duct length = (1.6 + 4.5 + 3.0) = 9.1 Pa [1]

Pressure drop due to fittings is determined as follows:

 Pressure drop due to bends = no of bends x (0.5 x V2 x 1.21)/2
= 1 x (0.5 x 32 x 1.21)/2 = 2.72 Pa [1]

 Pressure drop due to branch = no of branch x (0.3 x V2 x 1.21)/2

= 2 x (0.3 x 62 x 1.21)/2 = 13.07 Pa [1]

 Pressure drop due to entry from room fittings =

no of entry x (0.5 x V2 x 1.21)/2 = 1 x (0.5 x 32 x 1.21)/2 = 2.72 Pa [1]

Total pressure drop due to fittings = (2.72 + 13.07 + 2.72) = 18.51 Pa [1]

5 Calculation of total pressure drop along index path

The total pressure drop along index path = Pressure drop due to
extract diffuser + pressure drop due to duct length + pressure
drop due to fittings [1]

Total pressure drop along index path = (20 + 9.1 + 18.51) = 47.61 Pa [1]

6 Calculation of rating of extract fan

Net flowrate of pump = 1.1 x total air flowrate [0.5]
3 3
= 1.1 x 0.634 = 0.70 m /s = 2520 m /h [1]
Net pressure head of pump = 1.2 x total pressure drop [0.5]
= 1.2 x 47.61 = 57.13 Pa [1]
The fan is rated at 2520 m3/h with a pressure drop of 57.1 Pa.
