Homicide Case
Crime Scene and Incident Overview
On August 22, 2024, at approximately 9:30 PM, police responded to a 911 call reporting
gunshots at 456 Oakwood Avenue, Cityville. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of
Mark Reynolds, a 35-year-old businessman, lying on the pavement near his vehicle, a black
sedan. He had suffered three gunshot wounds—two to the chest and one to the head. The
suspect fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
A .9mm shell casing was recovered near the body, and security cameras from a nearby gas
station captured a dark-colored SUV leaving the area at high speed minutes after the
shooting.
Witness Testimony
A local resident, Sarah Thompson, who was walking her dog at the time, reported hearing a
heated argument followed by three gunshots. She saw a man in a black hoodie and jeans
running toward a dark SUV parked about 50 feet away. Another witness, gas station clerk
James Miller, stated that a man matching the suspect’s description purchased a pack of
cigarettes and seemed agitated shortly before the incident.
Fact 3: Investigation Findings
Surveillance footage showed the victim meeting with an unidentified man approximately
10 minutes before the shooting.
The victim's phone records revealed a call with an unknown number lasting 3 minutes
right before the attack.
Forensic analysis confirmed that the bullets matched a 9mm Glock, a firearm type
registered to the suspect, Daniel Carter, an acquaintance of the victim.
Autopsy results indicated that the victim was shot at close range, suggesting a targeted
execution rather than a random attack.
Fact 4: Suspect’s Statement & Interrogation
Upon being questioned, Daniel Carter denied knowing anything about the crime and claimed
he was at home watching TV at the time. However:
Cell tower data placed him near the crime scene during the time of the murder.
His clothing matched the description given by a witness.
When asked about his connection to the victim, he hesitated before admitting that they
had a financial dispute over a failed business deal.
During the interrogation, Carter showed signs of nervousness, fidgeting, and avoiding
direct eye contact, especially when asked about the murder weapon.
