THE BERKELEY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

Class: Year 3 Voyagers Term: 2 Week 9 Beginning: 3rd– 7th March 2025 Teacher: Mr David
Lesson Period: Morning
Unit of Work: Ordering and comparing fractions
Curriculum Objectives: Pupils should be taught to: use a number line from 0 to 1 to order fractions Vocabulary for the week: denominator,
Compare fractions using a number line or fraction strips recording using is less than and is greater than numerator, dividing line, unit fraction, non-unit
fraction, inequality, multiple
Find fractions that are equivalent in value, recording using the equals sign (=) 21st Century Skills:
. Collaboration: to work in a group/new
partner
Critical Thinking: to solve mathematically
Assessment for learning: paired work, group
work, individual activity

Cross-curricular links: fractions are used in design

technology or art and design to plan or prepare
resources, also in science when preparing experiments
or measuring and recording results.

Tch gives chn their fraction strips and ask them to compare
the size of each unit fraction and order them from the
smallest to the greatest.
Show chn example using this order: 1/10, 1/5, 1/4, 1/3,
1/2. Emphasize that they look at the denominators. The
smallest fraction has the greatest denominator if they have
the same numerator.
Give chn a copy of resource sheet 12C. All strips have been
drawn as one block, to make it easier to order and compare
fractions.

Differentiation:
Work with a group to write the fractions onto each vertical
line in the fraction wall.
Ask chn to use ruler to draw a line from fraction wall down
to the number line, to ensure that they are marking each
fraction in the correct place.
Challenge some chn to work in pairs to ask each other
questions about the fraction.
Play a short video on ordering of fractions to concretize
concept taught.

while you ask them to order fractions and compare
fractions using greater than and less than symbols.

Differentiation:
Tch mixes up fractions and ask the chn to order them right
starting from the greatest to the smallest.
Play short video on fraction of numbers using real life
examples.
Tch groups chn in threes and ask them questions from the
resource sheet from Cambridge Go.

the equivalent fractions:
1/2=2/4=___ =____=____=____=_____

1/10 =2/10 =____ =____= ____=_____

Differentiation:
Tch plays a short video on the display of equivalent fractions.
Tch explains the trick behind solving equivalent fractions and
ask the chn to replicate the same pattern using the same
formula.
Tch reiterates to the chn to use a particular number to
multiply both the numerator and the denominator to get the
next equivalent fractions.
Like this 2/10 × 2/2 which is 4/20.
