ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must possess the minimum O‟Level requirements of five (5)
relevant credits including English and Mathematics.
Department of Accounting
Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting & Finance (PGDAF)
i. Graduate of Gombe State University or any other recognized University

 ii. Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with a minimum of Lower
Credit in relevant discipline
iii. Holders of other professional qualifications which may be
acceptable to the University Senate
Master of Accounting (MAcc) Professional

Apart from the general admission requirements of the University, candidates

seeking admission, into the postgraduate programmes of Department of
Accounting should have at least five (5) credit passes at O‟ level including
English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any of Principles of Accounting,
Commerce, Government and Geography at not more than two sittings. In
addition, the following may qualify for admission into the Master of
Accounting (MAcc) programme:

i. MAcc applicants must have completed the equivalent of a four-year

bachelor‟s degree in Accounting, Finance, Banking, or Taxation from an
accredited university or tertiary institution to qualify for admission.

ii. Students with bachelor degree in related Accounting course such as

B.Sc. Business Administration (Management), or those from Insurance
and Stock Market Operations are eligible to apply directly into the MAcc
programme.

iii. Students with a non-Accounting degree interested in the MAcc

programme in Gombe State University must first complete the post-
Graduate Diploma in Accounting and Finance (PGDAF). the PGDAF is a
graduate diploma programme to acquaint non-Accounting students with
accounting principles and practices. Those students going through the
PGDAF program with the aim of seeking admission into the MAcc
programme must graduate with a “B” average and no grade lower than “C”
in any course to be eligible to continue on to the Master of Accounting
(MAcc) program. The areas of specialization for the MAcc programme as
follows:

M.Sc. Accounting
i. Graduates of Gombe State University in Accounting or any other
recognized University with a minimum of Second Class Honours Lower
Division

Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and Finance from a recognized

iii. Candidates with Third Class Honours degree may be eligible to apply
with a relevant Postgraduate Diploma with an Upper Credit

For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. Degree in Accounting is required.

Department of Business Administration

Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)
i. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Program Applicant must possess:
ii. Five (5) Ordinary Level Credit Passes including English Language and
Mathematics.
iii. Applicant with a Bachelor‟s degree (in any administration-related
major) from Gombe State University or any accredited institution at
home and abroad at a minimum CGPA or its equivalent at 2.00 or Third
Class are eligible.
iv. Applicants with minimum of B.A./B.Sc./B.Tech./HND from any other
field of study from a recognized University or Polytechnic may be
considered.
v. Applicants of recognized Chartered Institutes or Professional bodies
at a minimum of Upper Credit or its equivalent may be considered.
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
i. Applicants must have a Bachelor‟s degree in any specialization of
Business Administration from Gombe State University or any
accredited institution at home and abroad with a minimum of Second
Class Lower grade or Bachelor‟s degree in any field of study other than
Business administration provided such candidates possess
postgraduate Diploma in any specialized field of Business
Administration from Gombe State University or any other accredited
institution at home or abroad.
ii. All candidates must possess the minimum O/L entry requirements
into the University including credit passes in Mathematics and
English.
iii. Applicants with HND in any field of Business Administration with a
minimum of Upper Credit shall be considered but must possess a
postgraduate Diploma in any specialization of Business Administration
from a recognized institution.
iv. Applicants with Second Class Lower Division from any field of study
other than Business Administration who possess a Post-graduate
Diploma in any related field of Administration at Upper Credit level
from Gombe State University or any recognized institution at home or
abroad may be considered provided the University matriculation

 requirements are satisfied.
M.Sc. Business Administration
i. A good honours degree (at least second class) in Business
Administration and/or related disciplines from Gombe State
University or any recognized University is required.
ii. An applicant with a good Second Class Lower Division in relevant field
of study other than Business Administration who possesses a
Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management, Marketing, Finance,
Entrepreneurship or any related discipline at upper credit from
Gombe State University or any recognized University may be
considered.
iii. Candidates are required to write a selection test.
Ph.D. Business Administration
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. degree in Business Administration is
required.

Department of Economics
Postgraduate Diploma in Development Economics (PGDDEC)
Applicants should possess any of a Bachelor degree, Higher National
Diploma (HND) or equivalent qualification from a recognized
University
Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics (PGDHE)
The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics is designed not only for
those who have background in economics but also for specialists in
healthcare institutions such as: Physicians, Healthcare policy makers,
graduates of Nursing, Midwifery, Health Technologists Health Insurance
Experts, Community Health Practitioners, Pharmaceutical Industries,
Medical Laboratories, Hospital Administrators and Managers, people
working in Institutes for Health Researches, Health Departments at
Local Government levels as well as state and federal ministries. Through
this Programme, the targeted people will gain the skills and knowledge
required to work as a Health Economist in the public and private sectors
as well as International Health Organizations and NGOs.
Master of Development Economics
i. Candidates must satisfy the requirements of the University including
English Language and Mathematics.
ii. Candidates with Bachelor's Degree in Economics from an approved
university whose economics programme is accredited by the NUC.
iii. Candidates with a minimum of second class lower degree and a CGPA of
3.00 on a five point scale.
iv. Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma from a cognate discipline
awarded by a recognized institution with not less than an upper credit.

 This type of candidates would have to pass through entrance
examinations and would have to take some undergraduate courses.
v. Any other qualification accepted by the Senate of the Gombe State
University, and subject to taking preliminary courses at the
undergraduate level.

Master of Health Economics (MHE)

The Master of Health Economics programme is designed not only for
those who have background in economics but also for specialists in
healthcare institutions such as: Physicians, Healthcare policy makers,
graduates of Nursing, Midwifery, Health Technologists Health Insurance
Experts, Community Health Practitioners, Pharmaceutical Industries,
Medical Laboratories, Hospital Administrators and Managers, people

M.A. English Language
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division Honours
degree in English from Gombe State University or any recognized
University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in
English Education from Gombe State University or any other
recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. English Language
For Ph.D., a good M.A. Degree in English Language is required.
M.A. English Literature
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division
Honours degree in English Literature from Gombe State University
or any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in

Ph.D. English Literature
For Ph.D., a good M.A. Degree in English Literature is required.

M.A. History
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division Honours
degree in History from Gombe State University or any recognized
University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in
History Education from Gombe State University or any other
recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. History
For Ph.D., a good M.A degree in History is required.

Department of Political Science

M.Sc. International Relations
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division
Honours degree in International Relations or Political Science from
Gombe State University or any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in
related field from Gombe State University or any other recognized
University may be considered.
Ph.D. International Relations
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. degree in International Relations is required.
i. All candidates must have a B.Sc. Degree in Political Science or
International Relations Studies from Gombe State University or any
other recognized institution of higher learning with a minimum of
Second Class Upper degree.
ii. All candidates must have M.Sc. degree in Political Science
International Relations. Applicants, with M.Sc. in Social Sciences or
Humanities courses from GSU or any other recognized institution of
higher learning, must have taken some specified courses in political
science or international relations at the undergraduate level to be
eligible for admissions.
iii. In cases where grades are awarded at M.Sc. level, the candidates
must have a grade of B+ or 60% and a CGPA of at least 3.5 on a 5-
point scale.
iv. A brief satisfactory statement of intended area of research to be
submitted
M.Sc. Peace and Conflict Studies

Honours degree in Peace and Conflict Studies or Political Science
from Gombe State University or any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree
in related field from Gombe State University or any other
recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. Peace and Conflict Studies
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. in Peace and Conflict Studies is required.
M.Sc. Political Science
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division
Honours degree in Political Science from Gombe State University
or any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree
in Political Science Education from Gombe State University or any
other recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. Political Science
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. in Political Science is required.

Department of Public Administration

Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDPA)
i. Candidates should possess a Bachelor Degree or Higher National
Diploma from a recognized Higher Institution in Nigeria or its
equivalent from the Arts, Social or Management Sciences or a
related field of study.
ii. Candidates from a pure science background must have had at least
two years working experience and must have aspired to hold a
managerial position in their organization of work.
Master of Public Administration (MPA)
i. A degree in relevant field from Gombe State University or from a
recognized University with a minimum of second class lower
division.
ii. A postgraduate diploma at upper credit in a relevant field from
Gombe State University or a recognized university.
iii. In addition to the general requirements, graduates without a
background in the Social and Management Sciences are expected
to possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration or
Postgraduate Diploma in Management before qualifying for
admission.
M.Sc. Public Administration
Applicants should possess any of a Bachelor degree in Public
Administration, Political Science and International Relations from
Gombe State University or any other recognized University with a
minimum of Second Class Lower Division.

For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. degree in Public Administration is required.

Department of Religious Studies

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Christian Religion and Theological
Studies
i. All prospective candidates must possess five „O‟ Level Credit passes
to include English Language and Christian Religious Studies.
ii. Candidates that passed through Direct Entry must have possessed
Two „A‟ Level passes in Christian Religious Studies and any other
subject or NCE at lower credit in Christian Religious Studies and any
relevant subject.
iii. To qualify for admission into the PGD programme in Christian Religion
and Theological Studies Programme, the candidate must be a holder
of BA Degree in Religious Studies, Religious and Cultural Studies,
Religious Management and Cultural Studies, Christian Religious
Studies, Christian Theology, Christian Religious Education and other
related disciplines with a Third Class Honors from a recognised
university or its equivalent. All prospective candidates must satisfy
the university‟s requirements for matriculation.
Master of Pastoral Care and Counseling
i. Candidates must possess five „O‟ Level Credit passes to include
English Language and Christian Religious Studies.
ii. Candidates that passed through Direct Entry must have possessed
Two „A‟ Level passes in Christian Religious Studies and any other
subject or NCE at lower credit in Christian Religious Studies and
any relevant subject.
iii. To qualify for admission to the MA Programme, candidates should
be holders of recognized BA in Christian Religious Studies from any
accredited university by National University Commission with at
least Second Class Honours or its equivalent. Candidates from areas
such as Religious Studies, Religious and Cultural Studies, Religious
Management and Cultural Studies, Religious Education, and
Theology may be considered if their transcripts are deemed
acceptable for the programme by the University. All candidates
may be subjected to a selection process.
iv. All prospective candidates must satisfy the university‟s
requirements for matriculation.
M.A. Christian Religious Studies
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division

 Honours degree in Christian Religious Studies from Gombe State
University or any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree
in Christian Religious Studies Education from Gombe State
University or any other recognized University may be considered.

Ph.D. Christian Religious Studies

For Ph.D., a good M.A. degree in Christian Religious Studies,
Theology/Theological Studies and Religious Studies from Gombe
State University or any recognized University or affiliate institutions
may beconsidered.
Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Studies
Candidates who wish to pursue Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Studies
shall have any one of the following qualifications:

i. B.A. Islamic Studies

ii. B.A. (Ed.) Islamic Studies
iii. B.A. Shari'ah.
iv. LLB. Shari'ah.

Any other qualification deemed fit by the postgraduate committee of the

department.
Master of Islamic Banking and Finance
i. Five credits at the senior secondary certificates or its equivalence
not more than two sittings, out of which there must be Islamic
studies and English Language, or grade II teacher‟s certificate with
at least five merits in relevant subjects including English language and
Islamic studies.
ii. To qualify for admission into MIBF, applicant should possess a
Bachelor Degree (CGPA: 2.4 or above) in Accounting, Business
Administration, Management, Islamic Studies, Islamic Law, Economics,
Finance, Banking, or Insurance and other related programmes
obtained from recognized institution in the world. A good MBA, MBF,
MTM, MPA, MDS, MBCL and other related Professional Master‟s
(CGPA: 3.5 or above) obtained from recognized institution in the
world. PGD in Islamic Banking and Finance (CGPA: 2.4 or above)
obtained from recognized institution in the world. Any other
qualification deemed equivalent to the above MASTER OF Religious
Peace and Ecumenical Studies
Master of Religious Peace and Ecumenical Studies
To qualify for admission into the Master Degree Programme in Religious
Peace and Ecumenical Studies, candidates must possess the following:

 i. Five „O‟ Level Credit passes to include English Language and Christian
Religious Studies.
ii. Candidates that passed through Direct Entry must have possessed
Two „A‟ Level passes in Christian Religious Studies and any other
subject or NCE at lower credit in Christian Religious Studies and any
relevant subject.
iii. Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies, Religion and Peace
Studies, Religious and Cultural Studies, Religious Management and
Cultural Studies, Christian Religious Studies, Religious Education, and
other related discipline from a recognised University or its equivalent
with at least Second Class Honours.
iv. All prospective candidates must satisfy the university‟s requirements
for matriculation.
M.A. Islamic Studies
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division
Honours degree in Islamic Studies from Gombe State University or
any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree
in Islamic Studies Education from Gombe State University or any
other recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. Islamic Studies
For Ph.D., a good M.A. in Islamic Studies is required.

Department of Sociology
Master of Crime Management and Security Studies
i. Five O‟ level credits in English and Mathematics and any other
three relevant subjects in social sciences and arts.
ii. Bachelor‟s degree in Sociology, Political Science or related
disciplines from recognized university with at least a good 2nd
Class Honors Lower Division. Subject to the approval of the
School of Postgraduate Studies, applicants with 3rd Class degree
who have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in relevant disciplines
may be considered for admission.
M.Sc. Sociology
i. Five (5) O-level credits including English and Mathematics.
ii. At least a good 2nd Class honours Lower Division bachelor‟s
degree in Sociology or Anthropology from a recognised university
with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 is required.
iii. Similarly, candidates with First Class or a good Second-Class
Degree in a related social science discipline may also be considered
for admission; although the Department may ask such candidates
to fulfill other requirements (like passing an examination or
taking some undergraduate modules) where it is deemed

 appropriate. In addition, admission is also determined on the
basis of existing staff strength, and areas in which thesis
supervision can be offered.
Ph.D. Sociology
i. Masters‟ Degree in Sociology from Gombe State University or
any other University recognised in Nigeria or abroad, with
minimum CGPA of 3.5 in M.Sc.‟s course work.
ii. In addition, those without qualifications in Sociology may be
required to enroll for a Masters‟ degree in Sociology and pass
certain courses at the Masters‟ or Undergraduate levels. Under
certain circumstances Masters‟ Candidates whose work, in the
opinion of the supervisor, is of high quality may be upgraded to
the Ph.D. programme. Such upgrading would however require the
consideration and approval of the Postgraduate School‟s Board and
the University‟s Senate.

Department of Educational Foundations
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
i. All prospective candidates must have a minimum of first degree
obtained at not less than third class from Gombe State University
or any other University recognized by the Senate of Gombe State
University.
ii. If an applicant is a graduate with Higher National Diploma (HND),
the candidate must have graduated with a minimum of a grade not
lesser thanthe credit level.
iii. The University‟s requirements for matriculation must be satisfied.
M.Ed. Educational Psychology
All prospective candidates:
i. must possess bachelor's degrees with honours in Education
obtained at not less than a second class in the lower division from
Gombe State University (GSU) or any other University approved by
the Senate of GSU,
ii. that are holders of non-education bachelor's degrees obtained at
not less than a second class in the lower division from Gombe State
University (GSU) or any other University approved by the Senate
of GSU may be considered for admission if such candidates in
addition possess Postgraduate Diploma in Education obtained at not
less than the credit level from Gombe State University (GSU) or any
other University approved by the Senate of GSU,
iii. that are holders of third class honours degrees in Education may
be considered for admission provided that such candidates possess
Postgraduate Diploma in Education obtained at not less than the

 credit level from Gombe State University (GSU) or any other
University approved by the Senate of GSU,
iv. that are graduates with Higher National Diploma (HND), must have

Ph.D. Degree Programmes:

Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics (PGDMaths):
A candidate seeking an admission into the (PGDMaths) needs one of the

i. A Bachelor‟s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education,
Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, with a minimum
of Third class.
ii. An HND in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics,
Physical Science and Engineering with a minimum of Lower Credit.

The minimum requirements for admission to the Master of Science

Candidates for Ph.D. admission must satisfy the following conditions:

relevant science subjects at „O‟Level.

Physiotheraphy, MBBS / BDS, BSc Zoology or any other relevant
qualification from Gombe State University or other recognized

iv. Candidate who has PGD Human Anatomy shall be considered for the
programme.
v. Any other qualification deemed appropriate and approved by

For Ph.D, Human Anatomy

Department of Human Physiology

For Postgraduate Diploma in Human Physiology
i. O‟ Level requirements of five credits in English, Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics.
ii. The candidate must possess B.Sc., in Human Physiology/Anatomy, or
any relevant Biological Sciences degree from Gombe State

i. The candidate must possess B.Sc., in Physiology, MBBS, BDS, DVM,
Physiotherapy or any relevant Biological Sciences degree from
Gombe State University or any other recognized University and
must obtain a minimum of second-class lower division (2.75) with
NYSC discharge/exemption certificate. A postgraduate diploma
in Human Physiology or other related discipline may be an added
advantage for candidates without B.Sc., degree in Human Physiology.
ii. Candidate who has third-class degree from any institution
mention in (i) above with NYSC Discharge exemption certificate
and possesses a post graduate Diploma in any relevant discipline,
and has spent a minimum of five years after graduation, are
eligible to be considered for the programme.
iii. MSc candidates must possess ordinary level certificate requirement
at credit level in at least five subjects of English Language,
Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in West African
Examination Council/NECO, NABTEB Ordinary Level Certificate
or its equivalent in not more than two sittings.
For Ph.D/MPhil, Human Physiology
i. O‟Level requirements of five credits in English, Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics.
ii. PhD Candidates must possess a M.Sc. degree in Human Physiology (with a
minimum CGPA of 3.50) and above or 60% grade from Gombe State
University or any other recognized University.
iii. Candidates who have M Phi in Human Physiology with minimum CGPA of
3.50 shall be admitted into the PhD programme in physiology.

Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology

For MSc, Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
i. Five O' level credit passes in English Languages, Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
ii. Bachelor's degree of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) or other
medically qualified unclassified degrees of the Gombe State
University Gombe, or equivalents from other recognized
institutions (e.g MBCHB).
iii. In addition to ii above, the candidate must satisfy Gombe State

and Gynaecology or any relevant clinical discipline of Gombe State
University or other recognized Universities with a GPA of 3.5 on a 5-
point scale (in addition to being medically qualified).
iv. Medical graduates of Gombe State University with Distinction in
Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
v. Candidates may be required to undergo a screening exercise to
assess their suitability for the PhD program,
vi. In addition, the candidate must satisfy the University‟s requirement
for matriculation.

Programme, Name of applicant and Year of application. Also, transcripts
should be sent directly from the awarding institution‟s official email
address with an official covering letter. Transcripts must be stamped
and signed by the officer in charge of issuance before it is forwarded.
2. POSTAL ADDRESS:
When submitting through the Post Office, the mail must be stamped or
marked with institutional seal and should reach the Postgraduate School
of Gombe State University intact for it to be acceptable for use. Send
