Postgraduate Diploma in Development Economics (PGDDEC)
Applicants should possess any of a Bachelor degree, Higher National
Diploma (HND) or equivalent qualification from a recognized
University
Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics (PGDHE)
The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics is designed not only for
those who have background in economics but also for specialists in
healthcare institutions such as: Physicians, Healthcare policy makers,
graduates of Nursing, Midwifery, Health Technologists Health Insurance
Experts, Community Health Practitioners, Pharmaceutical Industries,
Medical Laboratories, Hospital Administrators and Managers, people
working in Institutes for Health Researches, Health Departments at
Local Government levels as well as state and federal ministries. Through
this Programme, the targeted people will gain the skills and knowledge
required to work as a Health Economist in the public and private sectors
as well as International Health Organizations and NGOs.
Master of Development Economics
i. Candidates must satisfy the requirements of the University including
English Language and Mathematics.
ii. Candidates with Bachelor's Degree in Economics from an approved
university whose economics programme is accredited by the NUC.
iii. Candidates with a minimum of second class lower degree and a CGPA of
3.00 on a five point scale.
iv. Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma from a cognate discipline
awarded by a recognized institution with not less than an upper credit.

This type of candidates would have to pass through entrance
examinations and would have to take some undergraduate courses.
v. Any other qualification accepted by the Senate of the Gombe State
University, and subject to taking preliminary courses at the
undergraduate level.
Department of English
M.A. English Language
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division Honours
degree in English from Gombe State University or any recognized
University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in
English Education from Gombe State University or any other
recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. English Language
For Ph.D., a good M.A. Degree in English Language is required.
M.A. English Literature
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division
Honours degree in English Literature from Gombe State University
or any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in

Ph.D. English Literature
For Ph.D., a good M.A. Degree in English Literature is required.

M.A. History
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division Honours
degree in History from Gombe State University or any recognized
University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree in
History Education from Gombe State University or any other
recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. History
For Ph.D., a good M.A degree in History is required.

i. Five „O‟ Level Credit passes to include English Language and Christian
Religious Studies.
ii. Candidates that passed through Direct Entry must have possessed
Two „A‟ Level passes in Christian Religious Studies and any other
subject or NCE at lower credit in Christian Religious Studies and any
relevant subject.
iii. Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies, Religion and Peace
Studies, Religious and Cultural Studies, Religious Management and
Cultural Studies, Christian Religious Studies, Religious Education, and
other related discipline from a recognised University or its equivalent
with at least Second Class Honours.
iv. All prospective candidates must satisfy the university‟s requirements
for matriculation.
M.A. Islamic Studies
i. Candidates must possess at least Second Class Lower Division
Honours degree in Islamic Studies from Gombe State University or
any recognized University.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Lower Division Honours degree
in Islamic Studies Education from Gombe State University or any
other recognized University may be considered.
Ph.D. Islamic Studies
For Ph.D., a good M.A. in Islamic Studies is required.
Department of Sociology
Master of Crime Management and Security Studies
i. Five O‟ level credits in English and Mathematics and any other
three relevant subjects in social sciences and arts.
ii. Bachelor‟s degree in Sociology, Political Science or related
disciplines from recognized university with at least a good 2nd
Class Honors Lower Division. Subject to the approval of the
School of Postgraduate Studies, applicants with 3rd Class degree
who have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in relevant disciplines
may be considered for admission.
M.Sc. Sociology
i. Five (5) O-level credits including English and Mathematics.
ii. At least a good 2nd Class honours Lower Division bachelor‟s
degree in Sociology or Anthropology from a recognised university
with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 is required.
iii. Similarly, candidates with First Class or a good Second-Class
Degree in a related social science discipline may also be considered
for admission; although the Department may ask such candidates
to fulfill other requirements (like passing an examination or
taking some undergraduate modules) where it is deemed

appropriate. In addition, admission is also determined on the
basis of existing staff strength, and areas in which thesis
supervision can be offered.
Ph.D. Sociology
i. Masters‟ Degree in Sociology from Gombe State University or
any other University recognised in Nigeria or abroad, with
minimum CGPA of 3.5 in M.Sc.‟s course work.
ii. In addition, those without qualifications in Sociology may be
required to enroll for a Masters‟ degree in Sociology and pass
certain courses at the Masters‟ or Undergraduate levels. Under
certain circumstances Masters‟ Candidates whose work, in the
opinion of the supervisor, is of high quality may be upgraded to
the Ph.D. programme. Such upgrading would however require the
consideration and approval of the Postgraduate School‟s Board and
the University‟s Senate.

Department of Educational Foundations
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
i. All prospective candidates must have a minimum of first degree
obtained at not less than third class from Gombe State University
or any other University recognized by the Senate of Gombe State
University.
ii. If an applicant is a graduate with Higher National Diploma (HND),
the candidate must have graduated with a minimum of a grade not
lesser thanthe credit level.
iii. The University‟s requirements for matriculation must be satisfied.
M.Ed. Educational Psychology
All prospective candidates:
i. must possess bachelor's degrees with honours in Education
obtained at not less than a second class in the lower division from
Gombe State University (GSU) or any other University approved by
the Senate of GSU,
ii. that are holders of non-education bachelor's degrees obtained at
not less than a second class in the lower division from Gombe State
University (GSU) or any other University approved by the Senate
of GSU may be considered for admission if such candidates in
addition possess Postgraduate Diploma in Education obtained at not
less than the credit level from Gombe State University (GSU) or any
other University approved by the Senate of GSU,
iii. that are holders of third class honours degrees in Education may
be considered for admission provided that such candidates possess
Postgraduate Diploma in Education obtained at not less than the

credit level from Gombe State University (GSU) or any other
University approved by the Senate of GSU,
iv. that are graduates with Higher National Diploma (HND), must have
graduated with a minimum of credit may be considered for
admission if such candidates in addition possess Postgraduate
Diploma in Education obtained at not less than the credit level
from Gombe State University (GSU) or any other University
approved by the Senate of GSU.
v. that have studied in languages other than in the English Language
must provide evidence that they have met the University‟s higher-
level English language qualification requirements at the time of
application,
vi. must have to undergo a selection test and interview,
vii. must satisfy the University‟s requirements for matriculation,
Ph.D. Educational Psychology
i. satisfy the University‟s requirements for the Master‟s degree in
Educational Psychology
ii. have a Master‟s degree in Educational Psychology with a minimum
CGPA of 4.0 or 60%

M.Ed. Guidance & Counselling
All prospective candidates:

Postgraduate Diploma in Biochemistry (PGDBC)
The minimum qualification is Third Class Honours degree in
Biochemistry, Biochemistry Education, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering,
Food Science or a Pass at Credit Level at HND in Science Laboratory
Technology or any other equivalent qualification approved by the Senate
of the Gombe State University.
M.Sc. Biochemistry
i. Applicants should possess a Bachelor‟s degree in Biochemistry from
Gombe State University or any other recognized University with a
minimum of Second Class Lower Honours degree.
ii. Candidates with Third Class Honours degree in Biochemistry or HND
and PGD in Biochemistry may also be considered
Ph.D. Biochemistry
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc in Biochemistry is required.

M.Sc. Degree Programmes:
A candidate who seeks admission into the academic master‟s degree
programme must hold a minimum of second class (Lower Division)
Degree with a CGPA of not below2.75 on the scale of 4.00-5.00 Point
of Gombe state University or any other recognized University. A
minimum of second class (Lower Division) Degree with a CGPA of not
below2.40-2.74 on the scale of 0.00-5.00 Point of Gombe state
University or any other recognized University or a relevant
Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 (Merit) on a
scale of 4.00-5.00, Provided that the University matriculation
requirements are satisfied in the relevant area.
Ph.D. Degree Programmes:
A candidate who seeks admission into the Doctor of Philosophy
programme must hold an academic master‟s degree of Gombe state
University or any other recognized University with a minimum of B
grade or 3.5 on a scale of 0.00 – 5.0 provided that the University
matriculation requirements are satisfied in the relevant area. The
Ph.D. degree programmes are available only for full time candidates.
M.Sc. Environmental Biology
i. Candidates must possess an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Biology,
Ecology, Parasitology and Entomology or Fisheries and hydrobiology
of Gombe State University or any other recognized University with a
minimum of B grade or 3.5 on a scale of 0.00 – 5.0 provided that the
Gombe State University University matriculation requirements are
satisfied in the relevant area.
ii. Candidates could possess any other qualification from any other
institution recognized by the Postgraduate School based on the
recommendation of Departmental Postgraduate Committee and
approved by Senate of the Gombe State University.
Ph.D. Environmental Biology
i. A candidate who seeks admission into the Doctor of Philosophy
programme must hold an academic master‟s degree in any of
Environmental Biology, Ecology, Parasitology and Entomology or
Fisheries and hydrobiology of Gombe State University or any other
recognized University with a minimum of B grade or 3.5 on a scale of
0.00 – 5.0 provided that the University matriculation requirements are
satisfiedin the relevant area.
ii. Any other qualification from any other institution recognized by the
Postgraduate School based on the recommendation of Departmental
Postgraduate School Committee and approved by Senate of the
Gombe State University could be considered.
M.Sc. Hydrobiology & Fisheries

i. Minimum of five credits passes in Biology, Chemistry, English
language, Mathematics and Physics at ordinary level. Candidates with
credit passes in Agricultural science or Geography may also be
considered in lieu to physics.
ii. Minimum of second class lower honors degree in Biology, Zoology or
B.Sc. (Ed) Biology of Gombe State University or of any recognized
institution.
iii.Any other qualification from any other institution recognized by the
Postgraduate School based on the recommendation of Departmental
Postgraduate Committee and approved by Senate of the Gombe
State University.
Ph.D. Hydrobiology & Fisheries
i. A candidate who seeks admission into the Doctor of
Philosophy in Hydrobiology and Fisheries would apply for
any of the following three areas of specialization:
o Fisheries (Aquaculture and Fisheries management),
o Applied Hydrobiology and Fisheries
o Freshwater Ecology
ii. Candidates seeking admission into the Ph.D. Fisheries degree
programme must in addition to the general university requirement
possess any of the following qualifications:
iii.The candidate must hold an academic master‟s degree in Fisheries
and Hydrobiology of Gombe State University or any other recognized
University with a minimum of B grade or 3.5 on a scale of 0.00 – 5.0
Provided that the University matriculation requirements are satisfied
in the relevant area.
iv. Any other qualification from any other institution recognized by the
Postgraduate School based on the recommendation of Departmental
Postgraduate Committee and approved by the Senate of the Gombe
State University could be considered.

M.Sc. Botany (Ecology)
Candidates should possess a minimum of Second Class Lower Division
Degree in Botany, or related field from Gombe State University or
any recognized University.
PhD Botany (Ecology)
For PhD, a good M.Sc in Botany is required.
M.Sc. Botany (Plant Physiology)
Candidates should possess a minimum of Second Class Lower Division
degree in Botany, or related field from Gombe State University or any
recognized University.

Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry
The minimum qualification is Third Class Honours degree in Chemistry,
Chemistry Education, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering,
Food Science or a Pass at Credit Level for HND in Science Laboratory
Technology or any other equivalent qualification approved by the Senate
of the Gombe State University.
M.Sc. Organic/Inorganic and Analytical & Environmental Chemistry
i. Candidates should possess a Bachelor‟s degree in Chemistry from
Gombe State University or any other recognized University with a minimum
of Second Class Lower Honours Division.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Honours in B.Sc (Ed) Chemistry
may be considered but would be required to take Undergraduate
Courses they may be deficient in upon admission.
iii. Candidates with Third Class Honours degree in Chemistry or B.Sc.
(Ed) Chemistry or HND and PGD in Chemistry may also be
considered.
Ph.D. Organic/Inorganic Chemistry
For PhD, a good M.Sc. Degree in Organic or Inorganic Chemistry is
required.
Department of Geography
Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management (PGDEM)
The minimum qualification for admission is Third Class Honours
degree in Geography or a Pass at Credit Level at Higher National
Diploma or any other equivalent qualification approved by the Senate
of the Gombe State University.
Master of Environmental Management (MEM)
i. A degree in Geography from Gombe State University or any
recognized University with minimum of Second Class Lower Division
is required.
ii. Applicants with Bachelors degree in related field or HND with a
Postgraduate Diploma at Credit Level may be considered.
iii. Applicants with a Postgraduate Diploma in relevant fields may be
considered.
M.Sc. Geography
i. Applicants should possess a Bachelor‟s degree in Geography from
Gombe State University or any other recognized University with a
minimum of Second Class Lower Honours degree.
ii. Candidates with good Second Class Honours B.Sc. Ed. Geography
may be considered but would be required to take undergraduate
courses they may be deficient in upon admission.
iii. Candidates with Third Class Honours degree in Geography or B.Sc.
Ed. Geography or Higher National Diploma and Postgraduate
Diploma in Geography may also be considered.
PhD Geography
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. Degree in Geography is required.
Department of Mathematics
Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics (PGDMaths):
A candidate seeking an admission into the (PGDMaths) needs one of the
following:
i. A Bachelor‟s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education,
Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, with a minimum
of Third class.
ii. An HND in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics,
Physical Science and Engineering with a minimum of Lower Credit.
iii. Any other academic qualification deemed appropriate by the

a) M.Sc. Pure Mathematics
The minimum requirements for admission into the Master of Science
Mathematics (MSM) program include:
i. An Honors Bachelor degree with a specialization in Mathematics and
minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 5.00 or its equivalent.
ii. A good Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics
or Computational Mathematics with CGPA 3.50 out of 5.00 or its
equivalent.
iii. Any other academic qualification deemed appropriate by the
University and Departmental Postgraduate Board.
b) M.Sc. Computational Mathematics
The minimum requirements for admission to the Master of Science
Computational Mathematics program include:
i. An Honors Bachelor degree with a specialization in Mathematics
with CGPA of 2.75 out of 5.00 or its equivalent. Students who have
completed a degree in Physics, Computer Science or Engineering,
with a bias in Mathematics are also eligible.
ii. A good Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics or Computational
Mathematics with CGPA of 3.50 out of 5.00 or its equivalent.
iii. Any other academic qualification deemed appropriate by the
University and Departmental Postgraduate Board.
c) M.Sc. Applied Mathematics
The minimum requirements for admission Applied Mathematics program
include:
i. An Honors Bachelor degree with a specialization in Mathematics
with minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 5.00 or its equivalent. Students
who have completed a degree in Physics, Computer Science or

ii. A good Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics
or Computational Mathematics with CGPA of 3.50 out of 5.00 or its
equivalent.
iii. Any other academic qualification deemed appropriate by the
University and Departmental Postgraduate Board.
Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics (PhD Mathematics)
i. A candidate seeking for admission into the (PhD Mathematics)
needs one of the following:
ii. A Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Mathematics,
iii. A Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Mathematics.
Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics
A candidate should posses normally one of the following in order to gain
admission to the PGD. Programmed:

pass degree of Gombe State University or from any recognized
University deemed acceptable by the Board of Postgraduate studies
and the Senate.
ii. Candidates must also posses the minimum matriculation requirement
of five „O‟ level credits including English and Mathematics for
University admission.
Master of Science in Statistics
A candidate should possess normally one of the following in order to gain
admission to the M.Sc. Programme:
i. Honours degree in the Statistics or relevant subjects with first
class or at least Second Class lower of Gombe State University or
from any recognized University deemed acceptable by the Board of
Postgraduate studies and the Senate.
ii. Candidates must also possess the minimum matriculation requirement
of five „O‟ level credits including English and Mathematics for
University admission.
PhD Statistics
Candidates for Ph.D. admission must satisfy the following conditions:
i. Candidates must have five credit passes including English,
Mathematics or Further Mathematics, Physics and two other
relevant science subjects at „O‟Level.
ii. Candidates with Bachelor‟s degree from an approved university must
obtain a minimum of second class lower division in Statistics with a
CGPA of 2.5/5.0.
iii. Candidates must have Academic Master‟s degree in Statistics with a
CGPA of 3.5/5.0 and thesis score not lower than 60% (B).
iv. Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity,
maturity and effective decision making and problem solving
potentials.
Department of Microbiology
Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology
Candidate wishing to pursue Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology shall
have:
i. A bachelor Degree (minimum of a pass degree) in Microbiology,
Biotechnology or any appropriate biomedical science: Applied biology,
Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry etc.
ii. Higher National Diploma (HND) in Microbiology or any of the
Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Science laboratory Technology.
iii. Five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology
and Physics at „O‟ Level.

M.Sc. Microbiology
i. Applicants should possess a Bachelors degree in Microbiology from
Gombe State University or any other recognized University with a
minimum of Second Class Lower Honours degree.
ii. Candidates with Third Class Honours degree in Microbiology or
Higher National Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology
may also be considered.
Ph.D. Microbiology
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. Degree in Microbiology is required.
Department of Physics
M.Sc. Physics
i. B.Sc.(Hons.) Physics or B.Sc. (Ed.) Physics (Hons.) with at least
a good S econd Class honours (lower division) obtained from
Gombe State University or any other recognized institutions
are eligible
ii. Third Class (Hons) degree in Physics or HND (lower credit) plus
a PGD in Physics or related discipline at lower credit pass may
be eligible
iii. B.Sc/B.Eng degree in Physics related discipline plus PGD in
Physics or Physics related discipline at lower credit pass
obtained from any recognized institution may be eligible
Ph.D Physics
i. B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics or B.Sc.(Ed.) Physics (Hons.) with at least
a good second class lower division (2.2) and M.Sc. in Physics
obtained from Gombe State University or any other recognized
institutions are eligible.
ii. A Ph.D proposal of not more than 20 pages should be submitted
along with the application form.
Department of Zoology
M.Sc. Applied Parasitology & Entomology
Candidates should possess a minimum of Second Class Lower Division
degree in Zoology, or related field from Gombe State University or any
recognized University.
Ph.D. Applied Parasitology & Entomology
For Ph.D., a good M.Sc. Degree in Applied Parasitology & Entomology is
required. The candidate must have a minimum of B grade or 3.5 on a
scale of 0.00 – 5.0 provided that the University matriculation
requirements are satisfied in the relevant area.

Department of Human Anatomy
For Postgraduate Diploma in Human Anatomy
i. O‟Level requirements of five credits in English, Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics.
ii. Prospective applicants must possess Bachelor degree in Human
Anatomy or Physiology (minimum of third class degree from any
recognized and accredited institutions in Nigeria; or
iii. Possess Bachelor degree in Science-based field such as: BSc Biological
Sciences, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Animal
Science (with minimum of third class degree from any recognized
and accredited institution); or
iv. AIMLT, HND Medical Laboratory Science (with minimum of
Lower Credit) from any recognized and accredited
institution.

iv. Prospective candidates may be required to undergo a selection
process or satisfy selection criteria as may be outlined by the
Department.
For PhD, Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
The following shall qualify for admission into the Ph.D. program;
i. Holders of Part I or Membership of the National Postgraduate
Medical College of Nigeria(NPMCN) or West African College of
Physicians (WACP) in Medical Microbiology or any relevant clinical
discipline.
ii. Holders of Full Fellowship of the NPMCN or WACP in Medical
Microbiology or any relevant clinical discipline.
iii. Holders of Master of Science in Clinical Microbiology and
Infectious Diseases of Gombe State University or other
recognized Universities with a GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale (in
addition to being medically qualified).
iv. Medical graduates of Gombe State University with Distinction
Medical Microbiology and Immunology.
v. Candidates may be required to undergo a screening exercise to
assess their suitability for the PhD program,
vi. In addition, the candidate must satisfy the University‟s
requirement for matriculation.

should be sent directly from the awarding institution‟s official email
address with an official covering letter. Transcripts must be stamped
and signed by the officer in charge of issuance before it is forwarded.
