Facts

Anjali Devi's 25-year-old son, Ravi Kumar, was a young and ambitious individual pursuing a

degree in mechanical engineering. He was known for his dedication to his studies and his

active involvement in community service. On the night of January 5, 2025, Ravi Kumar was

detained by the police in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on suspicion of involvement in a local

theft. The police claimed that a local shop owner had identified Ravi as the person seen near

the shop during the time of the theft.

Upon his arrest, Ravi was taken to the local police station for interrogation. According to the

police, Ravi confessed to the theft during the interrogation. However, Anjali Devi and several

of Ravi's friends and neighbours maintained that Ravi was innocent and had been wrongly

accused. They claimed that Ravi was at a community event at the time the theft occurred, and

several witnesses could vouch for his presence there.

The following morning, on January 6, 2025, Ravi Kumar's body was discovered near a

railway track, approximately three kilometres from the police station. His body bore multiple

injuries, including bruises and lacerations, suggesting that he had been subjected to physical

abuse. The police authorities asserted that Ravi had escaped from custody during the night

and had met with an accident while trying to flee. They claimed that he was hit by a train,

which resulted in his injuries and subsequent death.

Anjali Devi filed a Writ Petition under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution, alleging that her

son's death was a result of Police brutality while in custody. She argued that the Police had

tortured Ravi during the interrogation to extract a confession and had subsequently staged his

escape to cover up their actions. Anjali Devi claimed compensation, for the violation of Ravi

Kumar's Fundamental Right to life guaranteed under Article 21.

The Police authorities denied any wrongdoing, asserting that Ravi Kumar's death was an

unfortunate accident and that they had followed all due procedures during his detention and

interrogation. They maintained that Ravi's injuries were consistent with being struck by a

train and that there was no evidence of custodial torture or foul play.

Paraphrasing 1:

Anjali Devi, the mother of Ravi Kumar—a 25-year-old mechanical engineering student

known for his academic dedication and community involvement—found herself at the center

of a legal dispute following tragic events in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. On the night of

January 5, 2025, Ravi was detained by local police based on allegations of involvement in a

theft. The accusation stemmed from the identification of Ravi by a local shopkeeper, who

claimed to have seen him near the shop during the time of the alleged theft.

During custody, Ravi was interrogated, and according to police reports, he admitted to the

crime. In contrast, Ravi's family and acquaintances contended that he was innocent, asserting

that he had been at a community event during the time of the incident. They claimed that

several witnesses could confirm his alibi.

Tragically, the next morning—on January 6, 2025—Ravi's body was discovered near a

railway track, roughly three kilometers from the police station. His remains exhibited signs of

physical trauma, including bruising and lacerations, indicative of potential abuse. However,

law enforcement officials stated that Ravi had escaped custody during the night and suffered

fatal injuries after being struck by a train while fleeing.

Anjali Devi subsequently initiated a Writ Petition under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution,

alleging that her son’s death resulted from custodial violence at the hands of the police. She

claimed that Ravi was tortured during interrogation, leading to his demise, and that the

narrative of an escape was fabricated to obscure their misconduct. Her petition sought

compensation for the violation of her son’s fundamental right to life as protected under

Article 21 of the Constitution.

The police, however, refuted these allegations, describing the death as an accidental event

unrelated to custodial brutality. They maintained that their handling of the situation adhered

to procedural norms and that the injuries sustained by Ravi were consistent with a train

accident, negating the possibility of foul play or torture.

Paraphrased Narrative 2 :

Anjali Devi's world turned upside down on the night of January 5, 2025, when her son, Ravi

Kumar, a vibrant 25-year-old pursuing his mechanical engineering degree, was taken into

police custody in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Known in his community for his enthusiasm

toward learning and service, Ravi was accused of being involved in a theft based on a

shopkeeper's claim of spotting him near the crime scene.

Following his arrest, Ravi was interrogated by the police. They insisted he confessed to the

crime, but those who knew him well—his family, friends, and neighbors—stood united in his

defense. They asserted Ravi's innocence, saying he was attending a community event at the

time of the alleged theft, with multiple witnesses ready to verify his presence.

The morning after his detention, the unthinkable happened. Ravi's body was found near

railway tracks, just three kilometers from the police station. The injuries he bore—bruises

and lacerations—sparked grave concerns. For the police, the explanation was simple: they
claimed Ravi had escaped during the night and was hit by a train while attempting to flee.

Anjali and others, however, believed there was more to the story. They alleged that Ravi had

suffered police brutality and that the escape narrative was a cover-up for a tragic abuse of

power.

Determined to seek justice for her son, Anjali filed a Writ Petition under Article 32 of the

Constitution, arguing that Ravi's fundamental right to life, enshrined in Article 21, had been

brutally violated. She accused the authorities of torture and demanded accountability and

compensation. Meanwhile, the police denied all wrongdoing, holding firmly to their narrative

of an accidental train-related death.
