Reading Understand a blog post about learning languages

Hi, I’m Olivia! I’m 13, and I’m

Olivia’s from Austin, Texas, in the U.S. I

Blog like riding my skateboard and

spending time with my friends.
At school, I like music and
science, but my favorite subjects
are languages: Spanish and Italian.
There are a lot of people in my neighborhood who speak Spanish as
their first language. I practice my Spanish with them. Some of them
come from Mexico and they speak another Mexican language, Nahuatl,
but I don’t speak that.

I take classes in Italian because I love Italian food and I hope to go to

Italy in the future. There aren’t many people here who speak Italian,
so it’s hard to practice. I try to watch simple videos in Italian on
YouTube. It helps me to improve my listening! I also follow
some Italian people on TikTok. They make funny videos,
and it’s a good way to learn real, everyday Italian.

What languages do you like? Do you speak to people

in those languages? Do you watch videos in those
languages? Find a way to do those things to
get better! Bye for now!

In some families, everyone lives in the same city.
They often meet for meals or for someone’s birthday.
Carmen’s family isn’t like that. Her family members
live all over the world. Her sister is in the U.S. and
her cousins are in Europe. It’s hard to stay in touch.
However, Carmen’s family have a solution. They have a
tradition: the family Zoom quiz!
“We meet on Zoom every two weeks. We chat
about our lives,” Carmen says. “Then, we all read quiz
questions for the others to answer. Sometimes the
questions are about world facts, but sometimes they
are about members of the family. For example, when’s
Grandma’s birthday? (It’s May 1st.) Or, what’s my favorite
color? (It’s yellow.) We
all know each other very
well, but it’s easy to

WHAT’S IN

My favorite things
Hi! My name’s Ruby. I’m 13, and I’m
in 7th grade at Kennedy High School.
What do I have in my school locker?
Let’s have a look!
In my locker, I have books – a lot of books
for all my different school subjects. I don’t
have space in my backpack for a lot of
books, so when I have a class, I come to
my locker for the right book.
I also have other things for school: extra
pens and pencils. My planner isn’t in my
locker because I have it in my backpack.
I have a snack and a bottle of water in
my locker, too. I have lunch at school,
but sometimes I’m hungry in the
afternoon. I have a very quick snack,
and then I’m good to go!
I don’t have money in my locker.
My money is in my pocket. In my school,
the rule is: no money in lockers. And we
don’t have our phones with us in class;
it isn’t allowed, so my phone is in my
locker until the end of the school day.

Gustavo’s blog

Daily routines
Hey, everyone! Gustavo here. I’m interested to hear what you
do after school. I do my homework first. Then, I listen to music.
My favorite band is Arctic Monkeys. After that, I go to see my
friend, Jacob. We often play basketball in his backyard. When
I get home, I take a shower before I go to bed. What about you?

Hi, Gustavo! School finishes at 3:30 p.m., and I am in the soccer club.
I do that until 4 p.m. and then I go home. At home, I relax and I usually
watch videos on YouTube. After that, I send messages to my friends.
We talk about the day at school. After dinner, I spend a little time
reading before bedtime. Do you like reading? Tell us next time! Scarlett

Good question! My hobby is playing video games, and when I get home from
school, it’s the first thing I do. After an hour, I need some exercise, and I take
a walk around my neighborhood. After I get home, I practice guitar for half an
hour. Then I write about the day in my journal. It’s a good way to relax before
