CRITERION A: KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING

Levels Descriptions
You could hardly select appropriate mathematical strategy when solving
problems in unfamiliar situations.
1-2
You could hardly apply the selected mathematical strategy to solve
mathematical problems.

You could hardly solve the mathematical problems correctly.

Thus, achieving a score of 6 or less in criterion A.

3-4 Achieving a score of 7 - 11 in criterion A.

5-6 Achieving a score of 12 - 16 in criterion A.

You were able to select appropriate mathematical strategy when solving

problems in unfamiliar situations.
7-8
You were able to apply the selected mathematical strategy to solve
mathematical problems.

You were able to solve the mathematical problems correctly.

Thus, achieving a score of 17 - 21 in criterion A.

CRITERION C: COMMUNICATING

Level Description
s
You could hardly use appropriate mathematical language consistently.

You could hardly communicate lines of reasoning that are complete and

1-2 coherent. You have hardly shown detailed working wherever applicable.

Your work is not consistently organized using a logical structure.

Thus, scoring 3 or less in criterion C.

3-4 Scoring between 4-5 in criterion C.

5-6 Scoring between 6-7 in criterion C.

You have used appropriate mathematical language consistently.

You have communicated lines of reasoning that are complete and

7-8 coherent. You have shown detailed working wherever applicable.

Your work is consistently organized using a logical structure

Thus, scoring 8 - 9 in criterion C.

A crime has been committed by one of the 5 suspects below.

You have been brought in as a police consultant.
You should analyse the evidence provided to eliminate 4 of the suspects
and find who committed the crime.
You will need to be ready to present your findings to the chief
inspector in 40 minutes.

Good Luck!

The Suspects:

Suspect 1 Suspect 2 Suspect 3 Suspect 4 Suspect 5

5
E vi d e n c e 1: blood t yp e

The suspect caught their arm on some glass and so you were able to get a sample of
their blood, it has been confirmed as Type A.
Blood analysis works by looking for antibodies which indicate the blood type.

 X antibodies indicate Type A

 Y antibodies indicate Type B
 Z antibodies indicate Type O.

You need to analyse the lab results to see which antibodies the blood contains.

Anyone who does not have X antibodies can be eliminated

Suspect 1: 3x + 2y – 3x

Suspect 2: 7y – 3x

Suspect 3: 4y + 2y + x + 2x

Suspect 4: 3y – 3y + 4x

Suspect 5: 7x + 3x – 6x

Q1) Show working and Find which suspect is eliminated. [A-5,C-1]

Suspect 5:

7
E vi d e n c e 2: ke y c o d e

The money was stolen from a safe which has a key code.
Each suspect was questioned using a lie detector.
The final digit of the code is 6.

Anyone who does not get x = 6 antibodies can be eliminated

Q2) Show working and Find which suspect is eliminated. [A-5, C-6]

Suspect 1:_________________________

Evidence 3: FINDING VAUES

More than £12 million was stolen in this crime.

Substitute the value of each of the variables as a=2 , x =5 , y =−1

Anyone who has £12 or less can be eliminated.

Suspect 1: ( y × y × a× a)£

Suspect 2: (x 2 + y 2)£

Suspect 3: ( a+ 3 x + y ) £

Suspect 4: (2 a+ y )£

Suspect 5: (x + y )£

The CCTV cameras were hacked during the crime and turned off.
The police were able to trace the digital signature of the computer which
they worked out to be 12x + 32y.
Each of the suspects laptops were confiscated by police and their
signatures were checked.

Anyone whose laptop doesn’t show 12x + 32y can be eliminated.

Q4) Show working and Find which suspect is eliminated. [A-5, C-1]
