1- SCOPE

This procedure establishes the extent and fundamental requirements of visual

examination in the applications of include nondestructive examinations, leak testing,
in-service examinations and fabrication to determine the surface condition of the part,
alignment of mating surfaces, shape, or evidence of leaking.

2- REFERENCES:

 ASME BPVC Section I – Rules for construction of power boilers

 ASME Section VIII. Division 1- Rules for construction of pressure vessels
 ASME Section V – Nondestructive examination
 ASME B31.1 – Power piping
 ASME B31.3 – Process piping

3- PERSONNEL

Visual Examinations shall be performed by qualified and certified personnel in

accordance with the Requirements of SNT-TC-1A-Personnel Qualification and/or
Certification in Nondestructive Testing, ISO 9712

Personnel shall have an annual medical vision test to assure natural or corrected
near distance acuity such that they are capable of reading standard J-1 letters on
standard Jaeger test type charts for near vision. Equivalent near vision tests are
acceptable.

4- EQUIPMENT

Equipment used for visual examination techniques for viewing, magnifying,

identifying, measuring, and/or recording observations as follows.

5 – TECHNIQUE

5.1 DIRECT VISUAL EXAMINATION

Direct visual examination shall be made when access is sufficient to place the eye
within 24 in. (600 mm) of the surface to be examined and at an angle not less than 30
degrees to the surface to be examined. Mirrors shall be used to improve the angle of
vision, and aids such as a magnifying lens can be used to assist examinations.

Illumination (natural or supplemental white light) of the examination surface is

required for the specific part, component, vessel, or section thereof being examined.
The minimum light intensity shall be 100 fc (1076 lx) . The light intensity, natural or
supplemental white light source, shall be measured with a white light meter prior to
the examination or a verified light source shall be used.

5.2 REMOTE VISUAL EXAMINATION

Remote visual examination shall use visual aids such as mirrors, telescopes,
bore scopes, fiber optics, cameras, or other suitable instruments. Such systems shall
have a resolution capability at least equivalent to that obtainable by direct visual
observation.

5.3 TRANSLUCENT VISUAL EXAMINATION

The method of translucent visual examination uses the aid of artificial lighting, which
can be contained in an illuminator that produces directional lighting. The illuminator
shall provide light of an intensity that will illuminate and diffuse the light evenly
through
the area or region under examination. The ambient lighting must be so arranged that
there are no surface glares or reflections from the surface under examination and
shall be less than the light applied through the area or region under examination. The
artificial light source shall have sufficient intensity to permit “candling” any translucent
laminate thickness variations.

6- SURFACE CONDITIONING

 Conditioning of surfaces to be visually examined shall include the removal of

slag, dirt, oil, weld spatter, grease, moisture or any other foreign matter which
may mask the area to be examined.
 The method of surface condition is dependent upon the geometry of the
component and the degree of conditioning required. Acceptable methods
include but are not limited to chipping, brushing, grinding, solvent or acid
washing, and sand blasting. All conditioning shall be completed to the
satisfaction of the examiner prior to performing any visual examination.

7- VISUAL EXAMINATIONS

7.1 Material surfaces shall be examined for scabs, seams, laminations,

poor welds and other harmful defects.
7.2 Prior to welding, fit-up inspections shall be performed. These
inspections shall include the following as a minimum.
7.2.1 The materials shall be compared to the drawings to verify
their acceptability for intended use. Dimensional checks
shall be performed including proper angular alignment of
mating parts.
7.2.2 The root gap, misalignment, bevel, and cleanliness of the
weld joint shall be examined.
7.2.3 Verify that the welder is qualified and is familiar with the
welding procedure parameters such as proper filler metal,
shielding gas, electrical characteristics, preheat, inter-pass
temperature, and welding technique.
7.3 Random examinations shall be performed during the welding process.
These examinations include the following:
7.3.1 Verification that the welder adheres to the welding
procedure parameters.
7.3.2 Examination of the root passes; look for cracks or slag and
check for penetration if possible. Check for lamination in base
materials, which may open when heated.
7.3.3 Examine undersides of double-v joints after the first side is
welded to verify slag removal before welding proceeds

7.4 Upon completion, welds shall be examined as follows:

7.4.1 Utilizing rules, gauges, squares, etc., verify conformance of
weld size to specifications. Check fillet welds to determine
whether leg length, convexity, and concavity conform to
specifications. Check groove welds for width and
reinforcement height. Unless amended.
7.4.2 Look for discontinuities such as craters at weld ends,
cracks. Incomplete penetration, undercut in excess of
allowable limits, porosity and cold laps.
7.4.3 Examine welds for appearance slag, spatter, and arc strikes
shall be removed completely. Excessive weld roughness
shall be corrected by grinding or other suitable methods.
7.4.4 Verify that the welder has recorded his identification number
adjacent to all welds in a manner acceptable to the applicable
code or specification.
7.4.5 Verify that all welds numbered properly.

8.0 FINAL EXAMINATION

8.1 Perform dimensional and configuration inspection to the

requirements of drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and the
shop supplement. Be aware of proper tolerances.
8.2 If material traceability is required, verify that material heat
numbers are properly documented on the traveler or drawing as
required.
8.3 Assure that nicks and gouges have been repaired. Examine ground
areas for adequate wall thickness.
8.4 Check the nameplate or stamping for correctness. Verify tag
numbers of piece-mark numbers, etc. which appear on item as
required by applicable documents. Use certified marking pens
wherever possible.

9.0 ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS

The items to be examined and the acceptance standards to be used for

evaluation shall be as required by the applicable codes, and the customer's
specifications.

11.0 SAFETY

Proper PPE shall be worn during UT inspections. The following PPE shall be
worn at minimum:
 Gloves
 Eye protection
 Safety shoe
 Appropriate clothing
 Additional PPE may be required per customer policy.

Additional PPE if required as below.

For high temperature applications, suitable PPE such as long hand gloves (Ex:
