PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PIPE INSTALLATION

A. All joints int he pipe and tubing, except those at equipment requiring screwed
connections, shall be made with brazed-joint type wrought fittings. While being brazed,
joints shall be continuously purged with an inert gas such as dry nitrogen to prevent the
formation of scale within tubing. Suitable adapters shall be employed for the
installation of equipment provided with threaded connection. All brazed joints shall be
made up using brazing filler alloys that bond with the base metal being brazed and that
comply with ANSI/AWS A5.8.

B. A visual inspection of each brazed joint shall be made and the outside of all tubes, joints
and fitting shall be cleaned by washing with hot water after assembly.

C. All changes in direction requiring turns or off-sets of radiuses less than five times the
pipe or tubing outside diameter shall be made by Walseal or braze-type wrought fittings.
D. All pipe and tubing shall be cut accurately to measurements obtained at the site of the
system and shall be installed without springing or forcing. All pipe and tubing shall be
protected against mechanical injury in a manner satisfactory to authorities having
jurisdiction.

E. All pipe and tubing shall be labeled to indicate its gas content. Metal tags, stenciling, or
adhesive markers may be used if affixed so as not to be readily removable. Labeling
shall appear on the pipe at intervals of not more than 6mm and at least once in each
room and each story traversed by the pipe line. Where a label color code is used, colors
shall conform to the standards as used throughout the medical-gas industry (i.e., oxygen-
bright green, nitrous oxide-medium blue, compressed air-yellow, vacuum-white).

F. Pipe or tubing in corridors or other locations where exposed to damage from moving
equipment shall be adequately protected.

G. Medical gas piping may be placed in the same tunnel, trench or duct with fuel gas
pipelines, electrical lines or steam lines only, if separated, and provided there is good

natural or forced ventilation. Medical gas pipelines shall not be placed in a tunnel,
trench or duct where exposed to contact with oil.

Rev. 1, May, 2010 Section 15499

NATIONAL EYE HOSPITAL
Kilo 4.5 Cairo Suez Road

H. Medical gas piping systems shall not be used as grounding electrodes.

I. Oxygen and compressed air piping passing through kitchens, laundries or other special
hazard areas shall be run in conduit.

J. For low points of vacuum provide valved drip legs and 25mm brass petcock drains.

3.2 TESTS

A. This trade shall provide for the following test to be made by an independent testing
agency:

1. Initial Purge: After erection of pipe and tubing but prior to installation of the
service outlet valves and other medical gas system components, the system shall
be blown clear of free moisture and foreign matter by means of cylinder oil-free-
and-dry compressed air or nitrogen gas.

2. Cross Connection Testing: Shall be performed before connecting to any

existing piping system - To determine that no cross connections to other
pipeline systems exists, reduce all systems to atmospheric pressure. Disconnect
all sources of test gas from all of the systems with the exception of the one
system to be checked. Pressure this system with oil free, dry air or nitrogen of
the gas for which this system is intended to a pressure of 3.5 bars. With
appropriate adapters matching outlet labels, check each individual station outlet
of all systems installed to determine that test gas is being dispensed from only
the outlets of this system. Disconnect the source of test gas and reduce the
system tested to atmospheric pressure. Proceed to test each additional pipeline
system. Proceed to test each additional pipeline system. Before piping system
are initially put into use, the medical gas certification will be required that the
gas delivered at the outlet is that shown on the outlet label and that the proper
connecting fittings are against their labels.

3. Pressure Testing: Shall be performed before connecting to any existing piping

system - After installing service outlet valves, but before attachment of system
components, the system shall be subjected to a test pressure of 10.3 bars
minimum ( 14 bars maximum) with oil-free-and-dry compressed air or nitrogen.
This test pressure shall be maintained until each joint has been thoroughly
examined for leaks by means of soapy water. (A soap solution mixed in the
following proportions gives good results: One ounce of castile or palm oil soap,
eight ounces of water, and four ounces of glycerin. Dissolve the soap in water,
add the glycerin and mix thoroughly). Wipe joints clean after test. The main
line shut-off valve shall be closed. All leaks shall be properly repaired and the
system retested.

4. Final Testing: After testing of each individual medical gas system in

accordance with above, the completely assembled station outlets and all other
medical gas system components (e.g., pressure-actuating switches for alarms,
manifolds, pressure gauges, or pressure relief valves) shall be installed and all
piping systems shall be subjected to a 24-hour standing pressure test at 20
percent above working pressure (4 bars for all gases and vacuum except A8

Rev. 1, May, 2010 Section 15499

NATIONAL EYE HOSPITAL
Kilo 4.5 Cairo Suez Road

which is 10 bars) the normal operating line pressure. The test gas shall be oil-
free, dry air or nitrogen. The main-line shut-off valve shall be closed.

After the piping system is filled with test gas, the supply valve and all outlets
shall be closed and the source of test gas disconnected . The piping system shall
remain leak-free for 24 hours with no pressure drop. Vacuum pressure, when set
at 3.5 bars may drop 0.35 bars in 24 hours. Leaks, if any, shall be located,
repaired and retested.

The final connection between the addition and existing system shall be leak
tested with the source gas at the normal operating pressure. This pressure shall
be maintained until each joint has been examined for leakage by means of soapy
water or other equally effective means of leak detection safe for use with
oxygen.

The existing system shall be tested up to the closest valve at each connection of
the new work to the existing systems.

5. Alarm Testing: All warning system for each medical gas piping shall be tested
to assure that all components function properly prior to placing system in
service.

6. All tests as described above shall be performed for each phase of construction.

B. Spare Parts:

1. Furnish the following spare parts:

a. 10% pilot light replacement

b. Valves (hand operated)

1) 5% complete valves, each size and type

2) 20% complete repacking and reseating kits, each size and type.
