PRACTICE PROBLEM FOR CE 410 (HYDRAULICS)

1. A supply of water to resservoir C is drawn from two open resservoirs A and B by a pipe
network shown. The elevation of water in both A and B is 15 m above the level in C. The
friction factor may be assumed to be a constant with a value of 0.02.
a. Determine the rate of flow from reservoir A, in m3/s.
b. Determine the flow through pipe BD, in m3/s.
c. Determine the rate of flow through pipe CD in m3/s.

2. Water is flowing at the rate of 300L/s from A to E as shown. Compute the flow in each
pipe in L/s. Assume f= 0.025 for all pipes.
3. In the figure shown, reservoir A is he source of water supply and is at Elev. 150m, B is the
junction at Elev. 91.46m, C is the town at Elev. 30.49m with 25,000 inhabitants, D is
another town at Elev. 15.24m with a population of 30,000. Length AB is 15,240 m, BC is
9,150m, BD is 6,100m. Determine the size of the pipes if the consumption is 150 liters per
capita per day. For the pipes, frictional factor f = 0.02. Determine the required diameter in
meters of pipe AB, BC and BD.

4. A pipe network consists of pipeline 1 from A to B, then at B it is connected to pipelines 2

and 3, where it merges again at joint C to form a single pipeline 4 up to point D. Pipelines
1, 2 and 4 are in series connection whereas pipelines 2 and 3 are parallel to each other. If
the rate of flow from A to B is 0.01 m3/s and assuming f = 0.02 for all pipes, determine the
a.) flow (m3/s) for pipes 2,3 (0.0077 m3/secs)
b.) total head lost from A to D. (1.683 meters)
5. A 30cm x 15 cm venturi meter is provided in a vertical pipe line carrying oil of specific
gravity 0l9. The flow being pump upwards. The difference in elevation of the section and
entrance section of the venturi meter is 30 cm. the differential u-tube mercury manometer
shows a gauge deflection of 25cm, calculate the discharge of oil.
