(a) If you want to leave foot prints on the sands of time, you must know
how to live, suffer and die for your convictions. In one word, you should
be fearless till death for the vindication of truth. All great and good men,
whom the mass of humanity worship now, were fearless. They did not
hand down fear to succeeding generations.
(b) Jesus Christ was fearless, having a strong will power. The executors
have been forgotten; the executed is still hailed and praised in songs after
a thousand years. Gandhiji was fearless. He instilled the need of
fearlessness in the minds of young and old.

(c) Mentally dwarfed, spiritually bankrupt and intellectually empty men

have lived and died like ants. Nobody notices them. But people who stand

for a cause and are fearless in the midst of bullets and tortures are the salt

of the earth. They always conquer. It is only when a man is willing to

suffer and die for a cause that he will live eternally in the minds of men.

Those who do not know how to live will die unwept, unsung and

unhonoured. They come and go away without being noticed by others.
Fearlessness, however is not stoning the houses, burning the trains,

looting the banks or killing the common man. The individual who thinks
must convert the mob into a disciplined group of dedicated people who
must chisel in their minds the words we live and we die as men!
VIII-english (course -'a') (1)

pleasant.

When lead and marbles sink?
When stars should shine and winds should blow,
And why we eat and drink?
He wants to know why fish have gills,
And why we cannot fly?
Why stream comes from the kettle spout,

3. Read the following passage 5
Have A GOOD LAUGH!
Experts often refer to exercise, a balanced diet and plenty of rest as the three
essential factors for good health in the stressful society in which we live.
According to leading doctors, laughter is also extremely important to our general
well being. When we laugh, energy is pumped around the body and it perks
up the whole system. Our stress levels are reduced, which means laughter has
a calming effect on us.
More importantly, perhaps, is the fact that laughter releases chemicals into the
body. These chemicals are natural pain suppressants and they affect the immune
system, helping to speed up healing processes and activating hormones which
kill disease cells. In fact, in 1991, the first free Laughter Clinic was set up in
Britain so that patients could have fun, which would help them to get better
more quickly.
According to one doctor, laughter is a total body experience in which all the
major systems of the body, such as muscles, nerves, heart, brain and digestion,
participate fully, so laughter is almost equivalent to a form of exercise. However,
it is important to bear in mind that we are talking about laughter as opposed to
just a smile, in other words, "a belly laugh" says Howard Kent of the Yoga for
Health Association.
So how are we to fill our lives with merriment? Every happy home should have
a laughter library of joke books, classic cartoon books, collections of humorous
quotations and audio cassettes of our favourite comedians, comedy videos, fun
board games, comic plays, novels and amusing biographies.
Answer the following questions :
(a) What are the three most important factors for good health? 1

(c) Why do laughter clinic patients get better faster? 1
(d) What is laughter similar to? How? 1
