Computer
q A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control
of instructions stored in its own memory that can accept data
(input), process the data according to specified rules, produce
information (output), and store the information for future use.
Computer Components
q Any kind of computers consists of HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE.
q Hardware:
Computer hardware is the collection of physical elements that
constitutes a computer system. Computer hardware refers to
the physical parts or components of a computer such as the
monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive
disk (HDD), system unit (graphic cards, sound cards, memory,
motherboard and chips), etc. all of which are physical objects
that can be touched.
Computer Components
q Software:
Software is a generic term for organized collections of
computer data and instructions, often broken into two major
categories: system software that provides the basic non-task-
specific functions of the computer, and application software
which is used by users to accomplish specific tasks.
Computer Devices
q Peripheral
A peripheral is a “device that is used to put information into or get information out
of the computer.
q There are three different types of peripherals:
ü Input, used to interact with, or send data to the computer (mouse, keyboards,
etc.)
ü Output, which provides output to the user from the computer (monitors, printers,
etc.)
ü Storage, which stores data processed by the computer (hard drives, flash drives,
etc.)
Input Devices

q In computing, an input device is a peripheral (piece of computer

hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to
an information processing system such as a computer or other
information appliance. Examples of input devices include
keyboards, mice, scanners, digital cameras and joysticks.
Input Devices
q Keyboards
A keyboard is a human interface
device which is represented as a
layout of buttons. Each button, or
key, can be used to either input a
linguistic character to a computer,
or to call upon a particular function
of the computer. They act as the
main text entry interface for most
users.
Input Devices
q Mouse
q It is also known as a pointing device.
q Using mouse we can directly click on the
various icons present on the system and
open up various files and programs.
q In case of laptops, the touchpad is given as
a replacement of the mouse which helps in
the movement of the mouse pointer.
Input Devices
q Joy Stick
q It is a device which comprises a stick
which is attached at an angle to the base
so that it can be moved and controlled.
q Mostly used to control the movement in
video games.
Input Devices
q Light Pen
q It is a wand-like looking device which
can directly be moved over the device’s
screen.
q It is light-sensitive.
Input Devices
q Microphone
q Using a microphone, sound can be
stored in a device in its digital form.
q It converts sound into an electrical
signal.
q To record or reproduce a sound created
using a microphone, it needs to be
connected with an amplifier.
Input Devices
q Scanner
q This device can scan images or text and
convert it into a digital signal.
q When we place any piece of a
document on a scanner, it converts it
into a digital signal and displays it on
the computer screen.
Input Devices

q Tracker Balls
q An alternative to the traditional mouse
and often used by graphic designers.
Input Devices
q Barcode Reader
q It is a kind of an optical scanner.
q It can read bar codes.
q A source of light is passed through a
bar code, and its aspects and details are
displayed on the screen.
Output Devices
q Monitor
q The device which displays all the icons,
text, images, etc. over a screen is called
the Monitor.
q When we ask the computer to perform
an action, the result of that action is
displayed on the monitor.
q Various types of monitors have also
been developed over the years.
Output Devices
q Printer
q A device which makes a copy of
the pictorial or textual content,
usually over a paper is called a
printer.
q For example, an author types the
entire book on his/her computer
and later gets a print out of it,
which is in the form of paper and
is later published.
q Multiple types of printers are also
available in the market, which
can serve different purposes.
Output Devices
q Speakers
q A device through which we can listen to a sound
as an outcome of what we command a computer
to do is called a speaker.
q Speakers are attached with a computer system
and also are a hardware device which can be
attached separately.
q With the advancement in technology, speakers
are now available which are wireless and can be
connected using Bluetooth or other applications.
Output Devices
q Projector
q An optical device which presents an
image or moving images onto a
projection screen is called a projector.
q Most commonly these projectors are
used in auditoriums and movie theatres
for the display of the videos or lighting.
q If a projector is connected to a
computer, then the image/video
displayed on the screen is the same as
the one displayed on the computer
screen.
Input/Output Devices
q Both Input and Output Devices of Computer
q There are many devices that have characteristics of both input and output
devices. They can receive data as well as give out a result becoming useful for
both purposes.
Input/Output Devices
q Headphones
q They perform the same function as a speaker, the only difference is the
frequency of sound.
q Using speakers, the sound can be heard over a larger area and using headphones,
the sound is only audible to the person using them.
q Also known as earphones or headset.
q USB Drive
q It is a detachable device which can receive data from any computer as well as
send out data to other devices.
q CD and DVD Drives
q Saves data from the computer in the given format and can also send out data to
other devices with disk space.
Hardware Components / Hard Drive
q A hard drive is the hardware component that stores all of your digital content.

Your documents, pictures, music, videos, programs, application preferences

and operating system represent digital content stored on a hard drive. Hard
drives can be: external or internal
Everything stored on a hard drive is measured in terms of its file size. Documents
(text) are generally very small whereas pictures are large, music is even larger, and
videos are the largest. A hard drive determines the size of digital files in terms of
megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB).
Software
q Software – also called programs consists of organized sets of instructions
for controlling the computer.
User
q People are the computer's operators, or users. Some
types of computers can operate without much interv-
ention from people, but personal computers are desi-
gned specifically for use by people.
System Software Application Software

q System software exists q Application software tells the co-

primarily for the computer mputer how to accomplish tasks
itself, to help the computer the user requires, such as
perform specific functions. creating a document or editing
a graphic image.

Use the power button to turn your computer on. The power button
is on the base of the desktop computer and on the keyboard of the
laptop:
